Apple releases new iPhone commercials for AirPlay, FaceTime

Continuing their new "if you don't have an iPhone" campaign, Apple began showing two new iPhone 4 commercials tonight -- FaceTime and AirPlay. FaceTime demos iPhone-to-iPhone video calling, which has been a staple for Apple since iPhone 4 was released. It also demos iPhone-to-Mac and iPhone to iPad FaceTime, however, which is new. AirPlay highlights playing music from the iPod app on your home stereo and watching photos or movies on your Apple TV. (Of course, iOS 5 AirPlay mirroring will make a future commercial like that much, much more exciting...)

I'm still not a huge fan of the "if you don't have an iPhone" preamble, but at least these get back to more customer facing features, unlike the 3 store ads we had recently. (But hey, at least they're not trying to sell your wife a Tegra 2 processor...!)

Check them out after the break.

iOS 5 to bring FaceTime over 3G?

MacRumors received this screenshot from an anonymous reader today stating that it looks like Apple is preparing to take FaceTime over the carrier frequencies. It will probably be limited to 3G only, and not Edge. This is all speculation of course.

Unless you are apart of the jailbreak community, you are limited to FaceTime over wifi only, but if you jailbreak your device you are able to FaceTime over 3G via the MiFi app from Cydia.

Apparently it will be up to the carriers to allow or disallow it. What do you think, will AT&T and Verizon say yay or nay?

iPad 3G can make calls and send SMS messages with soon to be released jailbreak app [video]

If you have a burning desire to make phone calls or send SMS messages on your iPad 3G, you'll be happy to know that a group by the name of iPhoneIslam has demonstrated a jailbreak application that enables calls, SMS and FaceTime via phone number on an iPad 3G.

The hack will be called PhoneItiPad and should be available in the Cydia app store before WWDC. The hack requires no additional hardware but you obviously need a jailbroken iPad 3G. This means no iPad 2 support until there is a jailbreak released for that.

Once installed you get an iPhone dialler screen which unfortunately is just the iPhone version blown up 2x. It does look a little ropey; they are working on a full resolution version for this. SMS messages do work perfectly in full screen mode on the iPad. The demo video shows how it all works and it does look like a handy feature to have.

Take a look at the demo video after the break. Then pop back here and let us know if you would welcome the ability to use your iPad 3G as a phone?

Poll: Are you using your iPad 2 cameras?

Are you using the cameras on your iPad 2? Apple really didn't go out of their way to provide great cameras, basically porting over what they had in the iPod touch 4 instead of the much better camera in the iPhone 4. But they say the best camera is the one you have with you and from time to time, that will be the iPad 2, right? No, really? Perhaps you have seen our TiPb TV tourist episode and gained some inspiration?

If you've made regular use of your iPad 2 cameras for still pictures, shooting video, FaceTime calls, Augmented Reality apps, or anything else, let us know!

iOS 4.3.2 should fix Verizon iPad 2 connectivity issues

Boy Genius Report is claiming that the upcoming iOS 4.3.2 update should fix some of the connection woes Verizon iPad 2 users have been experiencing. The Verizon iPad 2 models seemed to be the only models affected. A dependable source has told BGR that the update should be available within the next week or so. It should also address a few WebKit vulnerabilities as well as a fix for some FaceTime issues certain users were having.

TiPb TV 17: iPad 2 tourist

We're back from flu enforced hiatus with an all new episode of TiPb TV featuring Apple's all new iPad 2! There's so much to cover we're going to be breaking it up over several shows and fair warning -- we're going to be having fun with it. (If you want a more traditional look, go read our iPad 2 review.)

This time around Rene and I take a look at iPad 2's Apple A5 chipset and iOS 4.3's JavaScript Nitro engine to see just how fast games like Infinity Blade can launch and websites like TiPb.com can render. Then we take FaceTime and the iPad 2's "cameras" on the road for a full on tourist test at the local mall. And oh man your eyes may never recover!

(In case you're curious, we used iPhone 4's Wi-Fi personal hotspot to connect iPad 2 to FaceTime over 3G which makes no sense but worked well.)

Watch along with us above and then let us know what you think -- is the web and app speed worth the upgrade? Are the cameras good enough to use in a pinch?
