Apple Stores merry with FaceTime Santa displays

Adding to the endless Beatles loops and festive iPad snow globes, Apple Stores now have their very own FaceTime Santa in the windows, spreading Christmas cheer to boys, girls, families, elves, and Mrs. Clause alike.

I caught this one on video at my local Apple Store tonight. Have you seen FaceTime Santa at yours yet? Any idea how he explains to the kids that they can indeed have an iPhone 4 under the tree but they have to ask daddy and mommy to foot the bill for the monthly voice and data plans?

Ho. Ho. Ho.

iPad 2 might just have a camera, better resolution display [Rumors]

More rumors out of the supply chain today suggest that iPad 2 might indeed have a camera -- front and back, actually -- and once again a better resolution display is being mentioned as well. Kelvin Soh and Argin Chang, reporting for Reuters, spoke to four people "familiar with the situation":

Two could only confirm they were ramping up for a new round of production in the first quarter for components previously supplied for the original iPad, while two said the ramp-up was for a new iPad.

One of those said the revamped model would feature cameras on the front and rear, while the other said the new model would be slimmer, lighter and have a better resolution display.

Imagining iPad 2

iPad 2 rumors have been making their way through the internet pretty much since the day after the current iPad debuted but lately they've picked up considerable speed. Leaks have come from supposed manufacturers and suppliers, of course, but given the time of year and Apple's refresh cycles for iOS devices to date, we could be seeing an iPad 2 announcement as early as January/February and a release in April. Either way it's coming. We all know it's coming. (We've even discussed whether or not you should get an iPad now or wait for iPad 2 next year). But what will it be like?

Based on rumors to date, I'm going make some guesses... after the break.

Apple rumored to have selected camera supplier for iPad 2

Digitimes are running an interesting iPad 2 rumor, this time claiming that Apple has another camera component manufacturer in place for the next iteration of the iPad. A few weeks ago we heard that PC Board manufacturers had been appointed. Now Digitimes claim rumors point to Largan Precision being the sole supplier for the camera lens. Largan Precision currently supplies a  lens for the iPhone 4.

iPad 2 to sport FaceTime, gyroscope, Retina Display, USB? [rumor

A Chinese newspaper is claiming, based on "industry sources", that five new features will be coming with the next generation iPad 2, including video phone, new display technology, 3-axis gyroscope, "better mobility", and USB.

We have previously told you that sources claimed the iPad 2 is rumored to be coming equipped with two cameras for FaceTime and this list seems to repeat that rumor.

The new display technology is said to "enhance image and color output performance" so could this mean iPad 2 will be getting its own version of the Retina Display featured on the iPhone 4.

iPad 2 component manufacturers revealed?

According to a report by Digitimes, three manufacturers have been appointed to provide components for the next generation iPad 2. Ibiden, Tripod Technology and TTM Technologies will manufacture and supply PCB boards for the new iPad. Additional suppliers will be added to the list in February 2011, when production of iPad 2 increases.

The sources said Ibiden, Tripod and TTM have received certification from Apple, and will start shipping any-layer HDI boards for iPad 2 in small quantities in December.

If Apple keeps to its yearly product update cycles, as is usual, then we can expect to see a new iPad announced in early 2011 and shipping by April.

iPad 2 to include two cameras, FaceTime [rumor]

Barron's is reporting that OmniVision will supply the CMOS sensors for two cameras in the next generation iPad 2 -- a 5MP camera on the back and a VGA quality camera on the front.

OmniVision (OVTI) will supply CMOS image sensors for a second-generation Apple (AAPL) iPad that will launch in the calendar first quarter of 2011

A second generation iPad 2 would most likely be introduced early 2011, perhaps in April like the original. WIth cameras would come FaceTime support. Now that Apple has opened up FaceTime to the iPod touch and Mac, we could be looking at a huge surge related to mobile video calling.

FaceTime between iPhone 4 and Mac [Video]

Right after Apple released FaceTime for Mac beta, Dieter grabbed his iPhone 4 and called me up on my MacBook. The video above shows the results. It worked well and looked good.

FaceTime for Mac is incredibly barebones right now, almost no UI chrome or options but we'll see what happens come release. The ability to stay in contact, visually, from any iOS or Mac OS device is compelling, but it would be even better if Apple released a Windows version. Let's hope that's coming soon.
