Latest IDC numbers show Apple making gains in China

IDC has released the numbers for smartphone shipments by vendor for Q4 2014. Unsurprisingly, Xiaomi is on top with a 13.7 percent market share in the fourth quarter β€” up from 6.5 percent over the previous year. Perhaps more interesting, however, is that it looks like Apple's launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus helped it jump up to the number two spot in the fourth quarter, with a 12.3 percent market share β€” up from 5 percent just the quarter prior.

IDC data shows tablet sales slowing but Apple and Samsung still own the market

IDC posted their quarterly numbers of the international tablet market. They're showing a slight dip in iPad dominance and growth from Samsung. Apple dropped from 40.2% of market share in the first quarter of 2013 to 32.5% in Q1 2014, compared to Samsung who went up from 17.5% to 22.3%. According to IDC, Amazon, Asus, and Lenovo each occupy 5% or less of the current global market share, with the remaining 34% claimed by other manufacturers. The overall market has dipped 35% since the holiday quarter which isn't much of a surprise, but it's up 3.9% since a year ago.

IDC announced the results of their quarterly smartphone research today, and found that worldwide, Android claimed 61% of the pie, followed by iOS with 20.5%, BlackBerry with 6.0%, and Windows Phone with 5.2%. The real shocker is that IDC projected a drop in iOS market share to 19% by 2016, and forecasted Windows Phone would claim just about as much as Apple with a 19.2% share.
