How iOS 6's flagship features compare to past versions, and to Android 4.1, BlackBerry 10, and Windows Phone 8

When Apple announced iOS 6 at WWDC 2012 and showed off its 10 new tent pole features, the response was... mixed. Some were delighted by the new maps app and the Siri enhancements, thrilled with Facebook integration and Safari image uploads, and intrigued by the potential of Passbook. Others saw iOS 6 as more tock than tick, a minor point release rather than a major new OS version, inattentive to power-user problems, and a sign that Apple was slowing down.

With Google releasing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Microsoft readying Windows Phone 8, HP trudging towards open webOS, and RIM scrambling to get BlackBerry 10 done and shipped, the competitive landscape has never been hotter.

So, just like we examined the iOS 6 and the App Store: Apple's multi-billion dollar balancing act evolution of the App Store in a competitive context, let's compare iOS 6 to previous iPhone and iPad software previews, and to what the likes of Google, RIM, and Microsoft have shown off to date.

Apple releases iOS 6 beta 2 to developers

Two weeks after making iOS 6 beta 1 available to developers, Apple has released iOS 6 beta 2 for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. The two week pattern is nothing new for Apple, with previous iOS x.0 releases sticking fairly close to it for the most part.

iOS 6 beta 2 is available as an over-the-air (OTA) update for those running iOS 6 beta 1, or as a download and iTunes/Xcode install from Apple's developer site for those who require or simply prefer a hardline.

FaceTime over cellular is possible under iOS 6, but will your carrier allow it?

At WWDC 2012, Apple SVP of iOS, Scott Forstall, announced one of the major new features of iOS 6 would be FaceTime over cellular. Introduced in iOS 4, FaceTime has been Wi-Fi only up until now, despite the widespread availability of 3G and 4G networks, and despite rival products like Skype having access to video of cellular for a long time now.

So the question becomes, will carriers allow it now?

David Barnard of App Cubby talks Retina Macs, iOS 6, and more at WWDC 2012

We grabbed App Cubby honcho and Gas Cubby, Launch Center, and Timers visionary, David Barnard right after the WWDC keynote to get his thoughts on Retina MacBook Pros and iOS 6... then we grabbed him the next day to reshoot the whole thing with better audio. (He's a champ like that.) David did an excellent job intuiting Apple's path to Retina, and he elaborates on that here. Also, David dives into iOS 6 -- what it tells us about Apple, and what it means for developers.
