AT&T airs new iPhone 3GS for $49 commercial

AT&T is airing a new -- that's right, new! -- commercial for the 2010 iPhone 3GS 8GB highlighting it's recently lowered price of $49. AT&T also has a new logo treatment at the end, which has also been attached to their previous iPhone 4 "anniversary" commercial.

Is it odd for AT&T to be advertising a phone that's been on the market, in one form or another, for for roughly 19 months now? Is the $49 price point so attractive compared to the $199 starting point for iPhone 4 that AT&T feels it's worth the marketing dollars -- even over newer Android and Windows Phone devices?

Daily subscription extension mean iOS 4.3 not coming until March?

It looks likely that iOS 4.3 will not be arriving until March. The evidence, although a little sketchy, comes from The Daily! No it is not an article in the app, but a subtle change in the subscription information. When The Daily was originally launched, you were given two weeks of free access. It was free because iOS 4.2 does not have the subscription services required to enable regular billing.

Daily Tip: How to change your iPhone text message notification tone

New to the iPhone and curious how to change your text message (SMS) tone? Apple is not overly generous when it comes to customizing alert tones on your iPhone. Ring tones are completely customizable but email tones can't be changed from the default unless you jailbreak. Text messages are somewhere in the middle -- you can personalize them but not customize them (yet). Read on after the break to find out how!.

Apple reportedly rejects Sony Reader app, changing stance on purchases made outside the App Store?

According to the New York Times, Apple has rejected a few apps recently including Sony’s Reader app, based on the way content is purchased for use within the app. Sony's Reader app is an eBook platform similar to Apple’s own iBooks app and the Amazon Kindle app. Content can be found and purchased outside the app, bypassing Apple's iTunes Store and therefore bypassing Apples slice of the pie.

iPhones and iPads produce beautiful music for AT&T event [video]

A group has put together a band using only iPhones and iPads and recently AT&T hired them to perform at its 2011 Business Solutions event. The band known as North Point iBand performed Bon Jovi’s Livin' on a Prayer as well as the Black Eyed Peas’ I Gotta Feelin.

The band use a series of apps, all available in the App Store to create the music with their iPhones and iPads some of which are:-

Take a look at the videos after the break, although not perfect renditions of the original versions, they are still very impressive. The way iOS devices are being used in weird and wonderful situations is something that surprises us every day. I am off to buy Guitarist, anyone want to grab the other apps and set up the TiPb band?

UPDATED: iOS 4.3 features: personal hotspot on iPhone 3GS

We received a lot of questions and conflicting reports about whether or not the new iOS 4.3 personal hotspot feature would work on iPhone 3GS and the answer -- from a software standpoint as of beta 2 -- is... kinda.

Personal hotspot replaces tethering in the iOS 4.3 Settings system and while iPhone 3GS does indeed show the new Personal Hotspot feature it doesn't show the Wi-Fi option available on iPhone 4. Yup, Bluetooth and USB are the only options, same as were previously available under Tethering.

iOS 4.3 multitasking gestures hacked onto iPhone 3GS [video]

YouTube user antoninygaard seems to have been able to go into iOS 4.3 beta and manually enable the multitasking gestures meant for iPad developer testing (as well as the mute/orientation lock toggle!) We heard Apple was testing them internally but he's got both running on his iPhone 3GS.

We already know Apple won't be giving them to end users for iPad much less iPhone any time soon but check out the video below and let us know what you think. Are the multitasking gestures usable on a screen that small?
