Titanium iPhone 3GS Mod -- Elegant and Armor Plated

According to Engadget, Martin Schrotz decided to pull a Colossus on his iPhone 3GS and transform the simple plastic backing into armor plating of nigh-invulnerable (and 3G friendly!) titanium alloy.

Check out the video for more, and let us know if this has you hoping Apple goes back to unibody metal for the 4th gen iPhone...

  • iwants..
  • Is there someone I can be able to do this. It looks nice and the value of the phone will go up.
  • Is Martin willing to do this for others? Definitely very nice and I am sure would be in high demand.
  • A better titanium iPhone v4 here : http://www.maccro.net/2010013160/liphone-v4-ressemblera-probablement-a-c...
  • Sweeeeeeeet!!!!!
  • That is pretty sweet. And the link above looks good. Especially with that front facing camera :)
  • Just wants a better screen..
  • Maccro's link is exactly what I'm hoping the v4 to look like. Fingers crossed. Although, I think we can expect a black strip to allow for 3G reception like on the 3G iPad. (http://www.mobile.broadband-hub.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/iPad3g...)
  • That iPhone v4 looks thinner than the current 3GS?
  • Yea! I want a metal unibody iPhone!!! The first gen was so hot!
  • I'd love to know how the RF performance is.
  • This image is photoshoped. There is no such thing as a RF-friendly titanium alloy and the silent switch above the volume rocker is clearly not the type found on the iPhone (looks like it moves up/down rather than front/back)
  • Just noticed on the v4 pic, the volume and mute buttons are on the right side of the phone, not left?
  • @ jon
well jon did you not watch the video, cause it looks pretty real and he made a call with it. So it's not so imaginary is it, eh?
  • I really like the idea of the ringer switch sliding up/down. I think it would be easier to switch on or off one handed.
  • I've been hoping for a return to the metal backing since the 3G debuted. I had the original iPhone and I loved the metal backing, I really hope they go back.
  • Yeah elegant except for the retardedly huge apple logo. And I really don't like what's been done with the sim tray and the headphone jack..
PS the v4 image is a Photoshop, this is a real, tangible item. Big difference. And I really wish people would stop making ridiculously thin mockups like that, it's impossible for the iPhone to be that thin with all of the hardware inside it, not to mention it just looks cheap, fake, and stupid.
And this doesn't have me wanting a unibody iPhone, I've been designing unibody next-gen iPhones for a long time...
  • Aluminum unibody all the way - titanium's tres chic but costs a buttload and is hard to recycle. Tho' since I'm unlikely to give up my Speck CandyShell, I'm not gonna see it anyway . . .
  • This thing looks pretty sleek, but since I have a case anyways I wouldn't see it. I think the form factor and case materials are decent, but the unibody-ness would definitely redefine the iphone in terms of style. Please give us a higher screen resolution though!
  • Given that the iPad displays a plastic backing--same as the iPhone 3G/3GS--I'm guessing that the plastic backing is here to stay (which is fine with me, as I think it's sleeker and prettier than the original aluminum). Still, that's an awesome case.
  • The back of the ipad is aluminum, Sadie. Hope apple is looking at this because they should use this on the 4th gen iPhone.
  • Listen up Apple...this is what the 4 gen iPhone should look like, just make the Apple logo smaller.
  • i looks preatty cool and is slim also how is its back. it looks in plastic or steel or Aluminum i think Aluminum will goo fine
  • Schweeeet! I currently have the Otterbox case. I would love to have something that provides the protection of the otter box with the sleek metal of titanium.
  • Look at this Ferrari iPhone 3GS: http://www.mod-my.com/Galleries/Customer/Photo1457.jpg
