Nice job, Apple!

I think denying Palm Pre users access to itunes will definitely affect a consumer's decision over an iphone or a palm, Both phones have similar features so it could be the one thing that makes a person choose an iphone over the palm.

Otherwise why so much hatred for a company that's done you no wrong?

It can't be just because they are in financial trouble - after all, Apple took milllions from a Microsoft handout just to stay afloat back in the 90's.

And why would Apple bother to brick Pre's - that would likely require them to hack their competitor's device just for the sake of destroying the property of one of their own iTunes customers - great PR move - not.

Not sure why you would think @dev's comments are not relevant. He didn't ask if it would be okay for Microsoft to brick Macs, just whether it would be okay to deny them access to Windows networks. Sounds pretty much the same to me...

If I were apple I would have had a new iTunes update to brick devices that aren't apple products, if you Pre owners want iTunes functionality go Buy an iPhone you cheap Sprint lovers!!!!

I see your point in this subject, but I have to make this point. We're talking about a device not being able to sync with one application. Not about an issue that would render some unable to use their computers altogether.

Apple hasn't said that Palm can't have users sync their devices with Mac's, in fact, nothing has been said by Apple at all, but if we read into their actions, This is Apple telling Palm that if they really want to use iTunes with the Pre, that they need to find a more ethical way to do so. Such as maybe requesting permission, and making this an official feature supported by both Apple, and Palm.

Again, I see the point your making, and I find it to be valid, but it's still a bit... far-fetched to try and use that in this conversation? Apple isn't preventing Pre devices from being used, Just preventing them from being synced with iTunes, at least without official support by Apple.

To be honest, The Pre hacking community will more likely then not find a way around this, either with a hack in in the Pre's WebOS, or via some modification to the iTunes application itself.

Seems to me that Microsoft helped me make my decision to leave Windows by making the one thing I didn't want to leave behind available on my Mac.

So of course apple isn't going to make it easy for people to go sync with another product. There are plenty of people that hate AT&T enough to consider a Pre. Why would apple want invite those people to switch by offering them the software they've grown accustomed to free of charge?

And if iTunes wasn't great, people wouldn't care about this. So as long as Apple has the best software attracting even more people to their iPhone and iPod, why would/should they give it away?

So...if Microsoft were to close the little window that enables Macs to participate on Windows-based networks, since Macs (both client and server) masquerade as Windows devices, that would be equally ok? Apple not only did not notify Microsoft (at the time not designated a monopolist), they did not even come along and write their little bit of code to perform the masquerade; they simply took the Open Source Samba project and redistributed it with OSX.

With that said, Palm came along and just thought that they could put a bit of code into the Pre that makes it seem like an iPod, and allow it to sync, most likely without even notifying Apple of this little "feature"

This is completely wrong of them to do, and I applaud Apple for closing the loop-hole that Palm took advantage of, This little update also will hopefully put Pre users back into reality, that they're not the coolest, most advanced people in the world, nor is their Palm Stone... I mean Pre.

And for the Pre fanboys who say that Apple "will never win this battle" - I'm sorry to inform you, but they will, Palm has no right to "hack" their device into iTunes without obtaining proper software licensing and approval from Apple, Apple will simply continue to lock Palm out of iTunes, and if Palm continues to resist, Apple will most likely just find some way to take Palm to court on something in the range of infringement upon intellectual property, or a breach of license (or lack of license.)

I guarantee Apple doesn't "break even" on anything. They make their margins.

How many customers will Apple lose if they let Palm use one of the main strengths? I bet they're is quite a few who bought a Pre because they could use itunes. These people may very well have bought an iphone instead.

As for lost itunes revenue? The Pre has an amazon mp3 store on its device which offsets the notion that Pre owners using itunes will buy songs using itunes. Apple wants people to buy ipods/iphones. That's priority number one.

Somebody had better tell Apple, who like most UNIX vendors, has been using Samba (an unlicensed reimplementation of Microsoft's SMB protocol) to appear as Windows shares on a network to access Windows resources since OSX 10.1

Shooting the much Vaunted Pre down, so much for the supposed iPhone killer, lol. Another one bites the dust!

But this was stupid. Those users wanted to send money to apple via their Itunes account, and Apple said NO, we don't want your money month after month year after year.

Is Apple within their rights? Yes. Is Apple in it's right mind? no.

If people get pissed at Apple they should be shot. Palm is the one to blame for being lazy and not creating their own software. That's not innovative at all.

Palm is to blame for having hacked its way into iTunes. The company needs to get its act together and develop a legitimate way to sync, as others have done. Apple is right for having nipped this in the bud; there is absolutely no obligation to support the Pre or allow it to masquerade as an iPod. Your beef should be with Palm for having used a hack instead of going the legitimate route.

Palm should have just taken the time to make a syncing program themselves. Every other device does it (except for the gag windows media player devices. Because they didn't play by the rules, they get the bench. Plain and simple.

Instead of developing their own itunes equivalent, perhaps by partnering with amazon or others, they hacked a way into letting people use Itunes with their Pre. Another opportunity for Palm to actually try to come up with something better.

This was doomed from the start. Be interesting to see how Palm digs its way out.
