Apple's iTunes App Store reaches 10 billion downloads

Apple's iTunes App Store has hit 10 billion downloads. Launched alongside iPhone 3G in 2008 it's grown to over 300,000 apps, with an install base of roughly 159 million iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices sold to date.

UPDATE: Apple has made it all official-like by announcing that Paper Glider was the magic app and Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK is the $10k iTunes gift card winner.

“With more than 10 billion apps downloaded in just two and a half years—a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone—the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The App Store has revolutionized how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet.”

Apple also stated that have more than 350,000 apps including 60,000 iPad-specific apps, available in 90 countries.

Bummed you didn't win? Hey, what would you have bought with $10k in iTunes bucks anyway?

    Did App updates count?

  2. fastlane says:

    Nine of those are mine.

  3. JXibalba says:

Once redeemed, that $10,000 gift card account will definitely be the desire of some hackers. Geez, no idea what I would do with that much iTunes credit anyways...

I missed out by just one!! I downloaded the 'Winmail File Viewer' app, which was the 9,999,999,999 app sold!!! I soooo wish it was me for the 10 Billionth download! ;)

    • Morgan Stephens says:

Too bad John. Oh well - there's always the "one trillionth download". Especially with Verizon on board, that can't be very far away, and who knows what that prize will be......

    • HirenBhatt says:

Hey JohnC1990, I am the creator of the app (Winmail File Viewer) you downloaded as the 9,999,999,999 app! Wow! So near yet so far for you. BTW, how did you know that it was the 9,999,999,999th app?? Anyway, thanks for the download and better luck next time.

      • JohnC1990 says:

I should be the one thanking you, coz your Winmail File Viewer app really saved my ass when I was trying to open a winmail.dat file attachment received on my iPhone 4. My client had sent me extremely important and time sensitive details using Microsoft Outlook, but unfortunately there's no way to directly open a winmail.dat attachment on my iPhone. I tried to contact him so that he could resend the attachment in some other format, but that didn't work. Luckily for me, my brother had used your app earlier on his iPad, and he suggested me to give it a try, and it worked!! So thanks again! ;)

I got an email from the Apple guys saying that I had downloaded the 9,999,999,999th app, and I am guessing that they must have sent such an email to the last 100 or 1000 users who approached the 10B mark! Anyway, I again tried to download another app (a game app), in the hope that I would become the 10B guy, but unfortunately somebody had already got the last one!

BTW, I have an idea of my own and would like to make a simple and profitable iPhone app such as yours, so could you please help me or point me in the right direction. I too wanna make some money of these apps. :)

        • HirenBhatt says:

Hey John, I am glad my app helped you! And if you plan on creating an app of your own, then I must say that this is the right time to cash in on the "app mania"! I can help you in creating a money-making app, coz I am an expert iPhone / iPad / Blackberry / Android / Nokia app developer with a registered team, so contact me on my email address, and we'll take it from there. Multiple download of same app on iPhone and iPad counts?

  6. Jae27 says:

I forgot all about it... Didn't even give myself a chance to win

  7. Ryan Moser says:

    Gail!? Gail!? GAIL!!!???

maybe she'll give it to her grand-kids...

  8. Dionte says:

I prob would have used most of it to gift family and random people apps on twinkle, twitter, wherever, save a couple grand for myself.

  9. Pierre Cuzmybladdersempty says:

What is the name of the app to the left of the eBay app, the one that looks like a robot?

  10. Farid Rahmi says:

Another nice hobby for Apple I guess. Last June they said they had only making 450K$ profit in the 2 years of existence of the store. Considering each of the 300.000+ apps had to be screened by a human as well as by a machine, it's clear this won't ever be a cash cow. But it keeps the hardware selling and some new developers make a living.

  11. Amanda says:

I would've sold it!! LOL Who would buy a $10,000 gift card?

Great issues altogether, you just won a new reader. What would you suggest about your put up that you just made some days in the past? Any sure?
