Apple releases Xcode 4... via Mac App Store

Apple has released the final version of the all new Xcode 4 -- the go-to tool for iOS development -- and they've released it via the Mac App Store!

Here's the link to go grab it, and the massive feature list is after the break! Anyone trying it out yet? If so, what do you think? Going to make me some great apps with it?

That's what I thought. I'm no developer but I considered downloading to play around in.
I take it there's no difference in what you get when you download this from the App Store as appose to using the link for "developers"?

I'm a developer and I can't seem to get to the link. When I'm logged into the dev center it keeps telling me I need to upgrade to the latest snow leopard... any ideas?

Wow...the feature list just goes on and on and on...It's this kind of stuff that puts more distance between Apple and any kind of competition.

I haven't tried it out yet - still downloading - but the previous version was still years behind Microsoft's Visual Studio IDE. If they can catch up a little it would be great - writing code to do control layout should have died a long time ago...

Totally agree. I use them all and haven't yet tried XCode 4, but I can't imagine they've caught up to VS2010. Say what you want about M$, but they're pretty good at some things.

Or you could pick up Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate for only $11,899. OK, OK, the Professional version starts at $549 and the Express (crippled) version is free, but still... wtf, Microsoft?

Yes, and it's too bad they didn't have better error handling on the download links - it shouldn't have been so hard to add a link to accept the new terms before downloading, instead of throwing up an access denied message with dead links on it. The App Store handle this. I only figured it out by going to check my account status and finding a link to agree to the new terms.

I am going to learn Objective-C now. As already mentioned, the tools you need from Apple to do the job. I just need a kick up the backside now to do it. This is what Apple do different, helping developers, £2.99 fee and you have what you need. Brilliant. Thanks Apple.

Yes only $4.99 ... Developer fee each year only $99 ... and only comission to apple 30%! wait until 2012...
then commission will be 40% .. developer fee $199 ... and so on!

So I guess you are able to host a website, process credit card payments and acquire coding and testing tools for way less? Who's stupid?

Xcode used to be free, as are tools on most platforms. $5 is not a big deal, but it is not going to cover costs, much less become a profit center. Most likely Apple is just putting a token fee on just to weed out the dilletantes.

There's some great conversation buzzing around the popular design blogs on this topic. The truth is, "responsive design" is just the buzz word as of this moment in time.Compatibility is really what most of you are talking about. Cross compatibility from device to device. Creating a unified experience regardless of your viewing "hardware" and browsing "software".It's really nothing new...Good design is good design
