Google Sync Down? No "iPhone"

Google Sync, the nifty ActiveSync-powered service that lets iPhone and iPod touch users get instant, "push" access to their Gmail, Google Contacts, and Google Calendar seems to be suffering a bit lately. According to Google:

As many of you have noticed, Google Sync is having some difficulties due to an extended problem with one of our datacenters. This has been going on over the weekend, but it’s got significantly worse today, so I’m just letting everyone know what’s happening.

None of your information has been lost, and you will still be able to get your data through Sync, but you will find that Push isn’t working very well. This is because we’re batching up fetch requests to be able to cope with the traffic we’re seeing while this problem is ongoing. As soon as we’ve got the problem fixed, push should seamlessly start working properly again.

We’re working flat out to get this fixed, but unfortunately we don’t have an ETA at the moment. We’re doing everything we can to improve the situation in the meantime, and I’ll post here again when I have more news.

Finally, I want to apologise to everyone – we’re feeling your pain too, and we will get this sorted out as soon as we can.

If you're having problems with your Google Sync, let us know!

Yup, it's a bit wonky for me. No new messages in my iPhone inbox but there are a few when I open the gmail web app. I've noticed it sporadically for the last week or so.

Eric says:

I was wondering why my calendar wasn't updating. I turned off activsync calendars and set the calendar up as a caldav. Seems to have fixed everything. Mail seems to be working fine though.

derek says:

i was having trouble then i rebooted and it was fine

Mike says:

Yep, I haven't had any push notifications for email since sometime yesterday.

Ole says:

Maybe google sync is running on fat PS3 hardware ;-)

jml87448 says:

I've been having issues on and off for about 3 days..... I'll have 7 emails all at once. Hope they fix this soon.

pricej636 says:

Yeah, push is not working here at all. Rather inconvenient.

Brian says:

I have definitely seen this too. However, Google Sync seems to break like this at least once a month so it wasn't too surprising. It's getting rather frustrating, though.

Dan says:

Thing has been up and down since it was released.
i dont even bother anymore.

evollime23 says:

Yep I haven't been able to get my push gmail since saturday morning, something about unable to verify the certificate so I've had to resort to do the imap version of gmail n manually pull down my emails evry 15min which sux but hope it gets fixed pronto!

Mashono says:

Yeah all yesterday I couldn't get one email pushed to my device. Gmail in the Safari was showing me my new emails, but the Mail app was just not loading any of them, still has been on and off today as well.

charlie17 says:

wow this is my best day...ps3 down, google sync down....2010 approaches LOL

Jared Price says:

Glad to know what's going on. My inbox is not refreshing even when I do a manual refresh. Inbox via web interface shows no new messages, on my phone has 4 unread.

rpv says:

it didn't work properly anyway to begin with! :)

MacBipes says:

Yup - Mine has been spotty and slow all day, as well. Did not notice yesterday. Let's hope they get it up and running smoothly again soon!

James says:

It's not just push it now working. As others mentioned, manually refreshing the inbox doesn't retrieve new email!
Glad you are reporting on this. No one else has to date.

Matt says:

It's had problems since day one.. I'm about to go back to IMAP.. At least with that I could see all of my mail, and I would be alerted to a email with-in 15 minutes... With Sync I get notified anywhere from a few seconds to hours later..

Luc Richard says:

Hahaha that's why it wasn't working when I decided to try it.

Syncopations says:

Google Sync is out for me as well. Playstation 3s around the world are screwed up. What's next? All US based wireless providers? Microsoft? iTunes? Geez....

sting7k says:

I wondered why it was so flakey all weekend.

EnglishRich says:

Yup, the wife and I jad to resort to text, and god forbid - talking earlier today, as email was not working..... pah! Google, please fix it quick

JNM says:

I wonder...does this affect email delivery on other platforms? Just Exchange synchronization with Google? Or just the iPhone?

Sammy says:

I just got a replacement iPhone and thought I did something wrong...but turns out its not me, its Google! Yeah, no push and even fetching isn't working, it just won't fetch. I'm going to have to use GMail over Safari for now.

Krypto74 says:

Ah. I wondered what was up. I've been using the gmail webapp since Saturday night...

Lee says:

Yeah I just deleted the account and went back to pop for now. I have to have my messages don't care much for the day delay or when i open from my desktop having 15 messages unread.

websyndicate says:

Figures the time I try to sync it doesnt work. I spent a couple of hours trying to figure it out. Oh well.

Henry says:

Wasn't working yesterday but seems to okay today.

Joe McG says:

It only works half the time anyway. Constantly getting a bunch of messages at once from several hours ago.

faceman says:

Haven't had Gmail Push since sometime yesterday... autoforwarded all my emails to Yahoo for now, their Push is working.

Cmotts says:

Same for me. No push at all since yesterday but I noticed a slight delay starting on Saturday afternoon/night. At least it's not just my phone.

ibikeride2 says:

push has been down all day, and in fact gmail will not synce with the iphone at all. I turned fetch on and that appears to be working.

Malnacido says:

Definitely not getting my emails as they come. Had to wait 45 minutes to receive an email I sent to myself from work. :-/

push says:

Push isn’t working very well.
This is because we’re batching up fetch requests to be able to cope with the traffic we’re seeing while this problem is ongoing.

Bob Howard says:

Google Sync has been flaky for about a week now. But I have my Gmail account setup on the iPhone as an IMAP account also, and those messages have been coming through just fine. The IMAP setup is just a backup, but I'm glad it's there for times like this week.

Donnie says:

Yep, today was pretty rough. I've noticed this problem on more than one occasion in the past, though - hopefully they figure it out.

Wongnog says:

I don't know what you guys are talking about, got no problems with push or gmail all week. Anyone else okay in toronto Canada?

tehdoucher says:

as others have stated, push gmail has never worked well.. im out in vancouver canada and ive been having problems with the service lately as well.

Mikeale says:

Been using 'pushmail' app for a year now, excellent backup mail notification. When I hear my 'pushmail' notification sound and no google sync notification, then google syncs having issues again.

Dan says:

I use regular gmail setup with mail notifier , by far the best option ive used.

loginatnine says:

Wasn't working this monday but it seems back up today (tuesday)
Located in montreal

Jellotime91 says:

Yep, it's horrible right now. A few minutes ago it wouldn't let me delete an email.

Virtuous says:

I haven't switched to Google Sync because the service hasn't been reliable. On my MacBook I still use BusySync to sync Google Calendar with iCal.

Ben says:

Been wonky all weekend and especially bad now. None of my emails or calendar events have loaded today, even if I refresh my inbox. I'm in LA.

ermax says:

It is pathetic that they can't keep it stable. Some people (Including me) pay for this service... sorry, disservice.

n733lk says:

Anybody know the REASON for the push problem? Very frustrating. Who's working on the fix? Are there plans to fix it, or force us all to other apps?

Donny says:

The Google Sync is down again, I can't get mails, contacts and calendar :-(

loginatnine says:

It's back down here too, It worked fine yesterday though.
Well back to IMAP for a while I guess

Jonathan says:

Down for me too.. What would change if I went back to CalDAV and IMAP?

Peter says:

Mail worked last night, but can't send or receive mail from my iPhone today.

Jonathan says:

So it's back as of 11:40PST on March 3rd on the west coast of Canada.

JC says:

Does it make any sense that my emails are not sending either? They stay in the Outbox and the phone says "Cannoot Send Mail. An error occured while delivering this message". I only see talk of issues RECEIVING mail from the other posts on here.

CH says:

JC, I am having the same problem with emails not the same error as you, "Cannot send mail. An error occured while delivering this message". Very frustrating, to say the least.

ibikeride2 says:

Yes was working on Monday, and now it's not again today, frustrating. Turning IMAP back on too!

Carl Robinson says:

Tried to reinstall Google Sync today - not working. Does anyone have news on when it will be back up again?

fanny says:

Haven’t had Gmail Push since sometime yesterday…

Carlos A. says:

yeah like google!!

My company moved to Google Apps Premiere from Exchange and we've had constant issues with push sync on our iPhones as well as their Google Apps Sync app for Outlook. This tech is definitely not ready for prime time, I wish we had known about this before we made the transition.
