iBooks update brings 'read-aloud' feature

iBooks for iPhone and iPad has been updated to 1.3 and includes new read-aloud feature that reads the book to you. It's only available for "enhanced" books and some books will even highlight the words as they are read to you.

  • Help your children learn to read with the new read-aloud feature included in select children's books from the iBookstore. The read-aloud feature uses a real narrator to read the book to you, and in some books, it will even highlight the words as you read along.
  • Enhanced books can now automatically play audio or video included with the book.
  • Makes iBooks more responsive when opening very long books.
  • Addresses an issue where some books may display the same page twice.

This will be a great feature for children learning how to read. If you have any books with this feature enabled, let us know what you think!

I've said it before, but I want to say it again - I'm very proud at how much continued focus you guys put on family based apps. You're one of the reasons why I created my own family review site (insert shameless plug here ;)) but without you, I wouldn't have known about the PopOut books when I did.
Thanks, TIPB, for recognizing that as parents, we interact so much with our children using our devices...

Looks like the jailbroken bug is back in this update... Launch book, stays open about 2 seconds then iBooks shuts down. Jailbreakers may want to stay away.

Cntcampula says:

Yeah so far unlike the last bug where if you reopened the book about three times it stayed open, this one won't and most of the time will completely crash out of the app.

afra33 says:

iBooks 1.3 crashes on my iP4 4.3.2 with jailbreak. It crashes as soon as i try to connect to the book store within the app. Any1 know of a fix?

Michael Johnson says:

Restore without JB if you need it now or wait it out until someone in the JB community creates a fix. Last time it only took a couple days for someone to figure out a workaround. I'm just going to wait it out. This is also why I only buy Kindle books now too. I ain't playing this iBooks jailbreak pie in your face game.

Wait, didn't I have a comment here? Where'd it go...?

andsoitgoes says:

No - I figured out what it is: between my original post and now, TiPB put in Discus to replace their old comment system, wiping out the previous comments!
I feel better now ;)

Michael Ray Johnson says:

OK, with new comment system and my old comment deleted, again I say for jailbreakers to stay away from this update. If not, you won't be able to open any DRM'ed books. Haven't heard if/when fix is coming
