Siri vs Cortana vs Google Now: The voice assistant showdown!

There's a new voice assistant in town, and it's called Cortana. With the release of the Windows Phone 8.1 developer preview today, Cortana is in public hands for the first time. Apple's push-to-talk Siri vs. Google's always-listening Now: Which is better?

Apple's push-to-talk Siri vs. Google's always-listening Now: Which is better?

With iOS 7.1 Apple's added a new feature to Siri, their personal digital assistant — the ability to manually control how long Siri listens. The concept is remarkably similar to the old push-to-talk systems, just hold down the Home button, start talking, and then let go of the Home button and Siri...

Do you really use Siri?

When Siri was introduced with iOS 5 on the iPhone 4S there was plenty of jokes made about the integration but just like iOS, Siri has grown quite a bit since the initial release. With that growth came a lot of new feature additions and improvements to Siri. It's a bit hard to gauge how many...

How to manually control when Siri listens to you with iOS 7.1

How to manually control when Siri listens to you with iOS 7.1

Ever had a time where you're using Siri and your iPhone or iPad doesn't stop listening when you want it to? Maybe someone else is talking or there's noise in the background, but you're done and the wave form just won't stop. Luckily iOS 7.1 solves that problem by letting you control not only when...
Wither the Siri API?

Wither the Siri API?

In 2011 Apple introduced Siri, their virtual personal assistant, with the iPhone 4s, and two years and two versions of iOS later, including this year's iOS 7, and no public application programming interfaces (API) have been surfaced for developers. That means customers like you and me still can't...

Wolfram Language gets shown off and I already want it bolted behind Siri!

iOS 7.1 makes British Siri more human, and female!

iOS 7.1 brought many things for many people, but for us British folks Siri got a noticeable update. Until now, we've been given only one choice for how Siri sounds over here; the robotic sounding male. With iOS 7.1 a few regions, the UK included, got improvements to the quality of the voice...

How to turn on and use Dictation on your new iPad

While the new iPad doesn't include full on Siri support, probably for a number of reasons, it does include the speech-to-text Dictation. However, Dictation may not be enabled by default, and if it's not, it's not at all obvious where to go looking for it.

The challenges of bringing Siri to the iPad

Siri on the iPad would need to address connectivity, user interface scaling, and some long missing apps

I would love to have Siri, Apple's voice-controlled virtual assistant, on the iPad 3. I wrote in my iPad 3 event preview preview that I anticipate it, and not a day goes by that I don't instinctively reach for the Dictation button on the iPad 2 keyboard and then grumble when I realize for the umpteenth time that it's just not there.

But as much as I love the idea of Siri on the iPad, there are some challenges Apple would need to overcome.

Developers can even add their own, custom commands via a new plug-in architecture. That means, unlike the limited built-in functionality Apple provides, many more powerful, and interesting, commands become available.

iPhone 4S has special noise reduction hardware for SIRI, makes official iPhone 4 Siri port unlikely

It turns out that Apple's Siri voice assistant is enabled by special noise reduction hardware called earSmart, wired right into the Apple A5 processor. The technology is made by Audience, which has an earSmart-less chip in the iPhone 4. The difference is, the iPhone 4 chip was designed to reduce noise when speaking directly into the microphone (like when you're on a phone call), while the chip in the iPhone 4S is designed for a wider field of sound, so you could talk to your phone at arm's-length (as one tends to with Siri) and still benefit from noise cancellation. The bundling of earSmart with the processor explains why the A5 chip was so much bigger than expected, even after taking into account the second core. It also means that, if you're still desperately clinging to the hope that Apple will someday update the iPhone 4 with Siri functionality, now's the time to let go.

Siri doubles iPhone 4S data consumption
