If you have an iPhone on Verizon, you can take advantage of their exclusive NFL Mobile app to stream Super Bowl XLVI straight to your mobile device. It’s a universal app, though it doesn’t specifically say that live video will also be streamed to the iPad version, so if you want to be absolutely certain you see it, keep your iPhone handy. Both versions should give you the latest news, videos, as well as all the information you need to stay in the big game.

NFL.com Super Bowl XLVI site

The NFL also has a full site up for Super Bowl 46, complete with history, events, visitors guides, live feeds, trivia, and much, much more. The mobile experience won’t quite be up to that of the desktop — which is why they made the apps — but if you want to make sure you’ve got everything covered, launch Safari on log onto NFL.com. And if you’re not on Verizon and need to watch live, you can do so from here with your Mac or Windows PC.

Football season is upon us again and with it comes the need for score updates, player stats, rosters, and other information hardcore fans want in the palm of their hands. For iPhone users, you’ve got tons of options when it comes to apps. Whether you just want to check score updates or check on your favorite fantasy football league. Follow along for our top picks.

ESPN ScoreCenter

ScoreCenter is by far one of the most popular sports apps in the App Store. Not only does it contain support for NFL but other sports as well. You can follow your favorite teams and choose to receive push notifications for a variety of different things. You can set alerts for individual games or for a whole season which is nice for people who may not want updates for games they’re able to watch. They can just set them for games they know they’re going to miss.

I like the fact that ScoreCenter allows you to follow all your teams and see a brief summary in one place. If you just want to check scores and stats quickly you won’t have to dig around. But you have the option to see more detailed information if you want to.

ESPN Fantasy Football 2011

For those of you that take part in fantasy football leagues, ESPN also offers an app for fantasy leagues as well. You’ll need to already have a fantasy league to use this app but once you have one, you can use the app to manage the following aspects of your fantasy league –

• Start, bench, add, or drop players
• Accept or reject trades
• Receive push notifications for scores, substitutions, and trades

The app also allows you to view fantasy league news as well. It’s also a free download in the App Store.

Pro Football Insider

If you want to view more than just stats, scores, rosters, and rankings – you may prefer Pro Football Insider. It contains not only the information you’d expect but thousands of video clips, updated news and rumors, and even more.

One thing I really found interesting about this app over the others was the integrated Twitter feed which aggregates Twitter postings from not only industry experts but players themselves.

If you’re a Pro Football Insider subscriber you’ll also have access to even more premium content that the free app doesn’t provide. This is an app any hardcore football fan will want to pick up.

NFL ’11

While I didn’t find NFL ’11 to be as in depth as some of the other picks, the ease of use and simple to navigate interface somewhat makes up for that. If you need an app that will give you up to date game information along with player stats, rosters, and statistics – NFL ’11 should suit you well.

You can customize alerts for teams and games just as you can in some of the other popular apps such as ESPN ScoreCenter. NFL ’11 also offers integration with their NFL.com Fantasy Football 2011 service and app. Most fantasy football fans I talked to seemed to prefer the ESPN fantasy app better but if you prefer the NFL fantasy app, this pairing may be a better option for you.

NFL Fantasy Cheat Sheet 2011

Here’s another app fantasy football leaguers will definitely want to check out. Not only does it aggregate up to date NFL news, standings, and charts – it’s one of the better apps out there for managing your fantasy leagues.

Out of the apps I checked out for fantasy football fans, this app seemed to have the best user interface by far. You can quickly view profiles and stats by simply swiping left and right. Other apps sometimes left stats buried and harder to get to. This app is put together exceptionally well and will make managing your content easier than ever.

Some of the main features of the app include the following and much, much more –

• Custom rankings based on your league scoring system
• 2011 projections and stats based on data from 2007 – 2010
• Team depth charts
• Rank players manually
• Draft player tracking

The soccer — or football to those of us on the proper side of the pond — season is starting again, so what better time to look at the best soccer apps for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. With these apps you can get all the latest transfer news, big stories, results, match highlights and even live games.

Sky Sports Live Football Score Centre

Sky Sports Live Football Score Centre is a great app that covers all the action from the main European leagues. It has all the scores updated as they happen as well as offering a host of other features.

There is live game commentary, league tables, match stats, results, video highlights and even team line ups prior to kick-off. Backed up by the fantastic Sky Sports team, this app is one of the best for soccer fans. You can even personalize the app by selecting your favorite teams. News and results are then brought to you on a dedicated my teams page.

Unfortunately this app is only available in the UK due to the link up with the televised games.

Fox Soccer

Fox Soccer lets you watch live Premier League and UEFA Champions League games on your iPhone or iPod touch. The app will allow you to follow every English Premier League game as well as provide the latest breaking news, in-match video clips, highlights and more.

The app starts off as a free version which offers news, fixtures, live scores and team line ups. In order to view the live games, you will need to subscribe. Access to the premium section is currently priced at $7.99 for a single month’s access, $22.90 for 3 months access and $79.90 for 12 months access. You then will get access to live video streams of the games.

LiveScore

LiveScore is a fantastic free app that provides real time scores from many sporting events around the world; with a particular emphasis on soccer scores.

Every match in the UK league is covered along with most other countries. With this app you will know about goals, yellow cards, red cards, substitutions, you name it, seconds after they happen.

There are no push notifications, which is a shame however the app does auto-refresh when open. The application comes directly from LiveScore Ltd., the inventors of real-time delivery of live sport data and owners of the no.1 ranked football / soccer web site globally. No country restrictions either! Fast access and my app of choice!

Eurosport

Eurosport has put together a very smart app for keeping an eye on all things sporting. Soccer is covered all across Europe with the results and latest scores from all the major leagues.

The app also covers other major sports including Tennis, Formula One, Basketball, Cycling to name a few. The layout and design is very clear and can be customized to match your interests. Eurosport also has a seperate app specifically for the iPad. Not sure why it can’t just make a universal app!

Football Manager Handheld 2011

The final app is not a news app but to finish off we have chosen a game. With this game, you can pretend that you are the manager of your club and guide them to the top of the league to wipe out the disappointment of your real teams underachievement.

Football Manager Handheld is a highly detailed management style game where you take control of your team, including transfers, tactics and training. The app covers 34 leagues across 11 countries. The game is highly addictive; so make sure you have plenty of free time before picking this one up.

Football season is fast approaching and why not prepare for the upcoming season by checking out the newly released Madden 2011 for not only the iPhone but on the iPad as well. The iPhone version will run you $7.99 while the iPad version is a bit steeper at $12.99. Yes, these two are pricier than we’d like to see but this is EA’s cream of the crop and has been for many years so it was to be expected. If you are not in a hurry to pick these up, simply wait a few weeks and it’s very possible you will soon see the prices come down.

The game itself contains some pretty great graphics for a portable device but also has some killer features carried over from the console versions as well.

• TDC (“Total Defensive Control”) makes playing defense pure fun. Press the TDC button to pause the action, position your defensive players, and feel the thrill of delivering game-changing hits like never before.

• GameFlow lets you to choose your play without having to go back into the playbook. Stay on the move with more streamlined gameplay.

• Match up all 32 NFL teams featuring updated rosters and nearly 2,000 real players.

• This season, get more gameplay depth with Hot Routes Everywhere. Now draw up Hot Routes for passing, running, and defense. Even save your best (or craziest!) routes as audibles.

EA also states that multiplayer will be coming in a soon to be released update for the iPad version.

Now, like Nokia, many generational North Americans aren’t as familiar with the biggest soccer/football event on the planet, but I’m sure there are tons of fans incredibly invested in just which team brings home the gold from South Africa this year.

• Are you using Safari and staying up to date over the web? If so, what site brings you the fastest updates with the information you want most? FIFA’s official site? Your local team site? Sports station? Fan site?

• Are you using an app or multiple apps to get the game on? Which ones do the job best for you? What features make them key? Push notifications for goooooooooaaaaaaaals?

• And, hey, if you have a top soccer/football game and use that to play along with the pros, throw your favorite in as well.

The NFL’s regular season is fast approaching and what a better way to kick the season off then with some Madden 2010 on your iPhone (or iPod touch)?! EA has been promising us some Madden action on iPhone for a while and now they finally will deliver.

The game will contain real NFL rosters and, based upon the screen shots, will include Brett Favre and Michael Vick on both of their new respective teams. While EA is promising a release date of no later than opening day, September 10th, there is no official word on a price point. All of that aside, we think you can expect Madden 2010 to stiff arm it’s way into the App Store at $9.99.
