GarageBand review: Get jamming with the new iPad

Are you a musician? Have you ever wanted to be a musician?GarageBand for the iPad gives seasoned musicians and those with rock star dreams an opportunity to create music.

Apple gave GarageBand a substantial update after the release of iOS 5.1 – in preparation for the new iPad. The graphics have been bumped up in quality and the options for creating music have been enhanced by the inclusion of iCloud integration, multiple users over Bluetooth and new instruments.

The premise of GarageBand is just as the name implies – amateur musicians and musician wannabees can play, record and share music they create using instruments on the iPad.

The TiPb staff picks their favorite devices, features, stories, and new or majorly updated apps and accessories of 2011!

The TiPb editors, writers, contributors, forum admins and moderators, and podcasters have come together to nominate and select the winners of the 2011 TiPb Editors Choice Awards. They were all tough choices, and a lot of things we love simply didn't qualify for consideration -- weren't new or weren't majorly updated for 2011. But a lot of really, truly great stuff was. These, then, are our picks of the year.

Vote now for the photo/video/music app of the year [2011 TiPb Awards]

TiPb Awards: Photo/Video/Music app of the year

Instagram went to version 2 and while initial reactions were mixed, popularity didn't seem to suffer one bit. Photogene also went to version 2, making a powerful photo editor even more powerful. Snapseed brings great enhancements and great filters together into one great app.

Apple's iMovie video editor hit the bigger screen, launching as a universal app alongside the iPad 2. 8mm Vintage Camera brought an old school aesthetic to one of the newest shooters on the planet.

GarageBand brought Apple's multitrack music editor to iOS, complete with instruments. Djay let you mix tracks so realistically you'll think you're in an 80s breaking movie. DM1 - The Drum Machine turned your iPad into a vintage drum kit.

Yes, it's odd jumbling all these apps together, but to keep the number of categories sane, we had to it. They all have two things in common, however -- they're all great and you have to pick your favorite. Vote up top and tell us why you voted they way you did in the comments! These are your awards, so get to it!

Apple's GarageBand comes to iPhone

Launched alongside iPad 2, Apple's multitouch version of GarageBand has just been updated as a universal app -- that's right, it now supports iPhone and iPod touch as well. GarageBand for iOS is a re-imagining of Apple's traditional iLife music recording, mixing, and rendering app for their modern mobile platforms.

Apple's SVP of Marketing, Phil Schiller:

GarageBand on iPad has been a big hit and we think customers will love using it on their iPhone or iPod touch,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The innovative Multi-Touch interface combined with Smart Instruments makes it easy to create great sounding music, even if you’ve never studied music or played an instrument before.

Amazing guitar solo performed with only the GarageBand app and an iPad [video]

We know that Apple’s GarageBand has the potential to be able to create great pieces of music, for those talented enough be able to use it properly. One of those people is George Lambro who has created a mesmerizing guitar solo backed by drums and bass. All of the instruments were played using the GarageBand app on his iPad.

This is me creating a jam track with apple's Garageband app for the iPad and then shredding a guitar solo over it! I am sorry about the bad video quality, but i could not find a way to record iPad's screen in a fast framerate. Anyway i believe you will get the idea. Hope you enjoy!

Take a look at the video after the break then let us know what you think. Have any of our readers managed to get GarageBand performing as good? Let us know in the comments!
