Daily Tip: how to customize push notifications for Twitter

Use a Twitter app on your iPhone and wondering how to customize a balance between getting far too many push notifications, or none at all? Between your main timeline, @ replies/mentions, direct messages (DMs), list notifications, and trending topics - it can be a little overwhelming. There's been talk of Twitter being integrated into iOS 5, but until then, you've got a few options. We'll show them to you after the break!

Twitter announces new search, their own photo hosting

Twitter today announced improved search, and first-party (i.e. Twitter's own) image hosting service.

Today we're starting to roll out a completely new version of Twitter search. Not only will it deliver more relevant Tweets when you search for something or click on a trending topic, but it will also show you related photos and videos, right there on the results page. It's never been easier to get a sense of what's happening right now, wherever your curiosity takes you.

The image hosting is an even bigger deal, given the someone dubious licensing terms some third party hosts have been putting in place (taking ownership of users' photos as their own).

Millions of people share photos on Twitter every day. We're going to make that easier than ever. Over the next several weeks, we'll be releasing a feature to upload a photo and attach it to your Tweet right from Twitter.com. And of course, you'll soon be able to easily do this from all of our official mobile apps. A special thanks to our partner Photobucket for hosting these photos behind the scenes.

So expect updates for Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for iPad soon to take advantage of these new features... and perhaps some bigger announcements come the WWDC keynote on Monday...

Video after the break!

Twitter rolling out web app redesign resembling official iPhone app

Twitter is rolling out a significant redesign to their mobile website, the one you see when accessing Twitter.com via Safari on iPhone or iPod touch, and other mobile device browsers. The new web app layout is molded around the official Twitter for iPhone app and is heavily doused in HTML5 goodness, however the menu bar has been switched to the top instead of the bottom.

Twitter app updated, gains camera support for iPad 2

Twitter for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad had been updated again and if you think it finally fixes that hideous #dickbar... you'd be wrong. #dickbar is still there, but now it adds support for the iPad 2 camera hardware (such as it is). Here's the brief change log:

  • Photo/Video capture support for iPad 2
  • Disabled significant location change monitoring that was causing compass to appear constantly when in app
  • Bug Fixes from user reported crashes

As always, it's free in the app store so if you check it out let us know what you think!

Twitter for iPhone (Tweetie 3.0) is coming... now-ish

Twitter for iPhone, aka Tweetie 3.0, is showing as an available update now in iTunes, though the link currently leads to an "application unavailable" popup. We take this to mean that, yes, Tweetie 2.0 was pulled from the iTunes App Store last night because the newly rebranded version is on its way... now-ish.

How long it takes for now-ish to become now depends on entirely on the wanton tease that is iTunes' international propagation system. If/when you manage to grab it, let us know in comments and tell us what you think. (Especially if you spot any nifty new features!)

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Tweetie 2 gone from App Store. Twitter for iPhone incoming?

Looks like Tweetie 2 is gone from the App Store and that could mean its anticipated renaming and relaunch as Twitter for iPhone is nigh.

Atebits's Loren Brichter, the developer behind Tweetie, announced just over a month ago that Twitter was buying Tweetie as their official iPhone app and he was joining their mobile division, and that not only would the Mac version continue (users are eagerly waiting for Tweetie for Mac 2), an iPad version was also on its way.

TechCrunch teases that a new Twitter for iPhone, if it is indeed launched today-ish, could even be a universal binary that works for both iPhone and iPad.

While we wait and see, let us know if you're not a current Tweetie user, will it going all official (and free) prompt you to switch or at least give it a try? (And what will that mean for
