According to The Wall Street Journal, the private memorial held for Steve Jobs yesterday included moving words from family, friends and senior executives from the industry.

Steve Jobs’s widow Laurene Powell Jobs, sister Mona Simpson and three of his children spoke at the memorial service held for the Apple co-founder on Sunday, according to two people who attended [...] Both people who attended described the service as incredibly moving and a fitting tribute to Mr. Jobs, who was known as a tech visionary, demanding boss and a fanatic for design. One person mentioned that many speakers cracked jokes about Mr. Jobs, who died on Oct. 5 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Others who were close to Jobs that also spoke during the memorial included Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and Apple Senior VP for Industrial Design Jony Ive. Bono from U2 also performed, along with Yo Yo Ma and singer Joan Baez, with Bono reading lyrics from an iPad during the performance.

Apple plans to celebrate the life of Steve Jobs on October 19th on the Infinite Loop campus.



We previously mentioned that RIM was picking up Apple’s leftovers and sponsoring U2′s next tour under the BlackBerry brand. Seems even that wasn’t enough for Bono. Not considering this quote he dumped on Canada’s Globe & Mail (via BGR):

“I’m very excited about this. Research In Motion is going to give us what Apple wouldn’t — access to their labs and their people so we can do something really spectacular.”

Memo to Bono: you are not a product engineer. While you may also have a pseudo-Britannic accent, you’re certainly not Jonathan Ive. You’re a singer; and just lucky enough to live in a time when singers make tons of money rather than getting spoiled fruit thrown at them. Let’s try putting this in a context you might better understand:

“Steve Jobs said U2 is letting him do what John Mayer never would: go into the recording studio and solo on their new album…”

And RIM, what are you thinking? Bono pretty much owns most of Palm these days, and even they won’t let him in the labs. You’re making tons of money. Leave the cheap celebrity debacles to LG…

Yep, U2 has left the warm embrace of Apple (though Product Red iPods no doubt remain) for the harsh corporate sponsorship of RIM. Of course, they flirted briefly with Dell first, and Bono’s Elevation Partners are huge backers of Palm — though according to PreCentral.net they likely needed to spend their cash on far more serious things, like bringing the Pre to market… Still:

“This tour announcement marks the first stage of a relationship and shared vision between RIM and U2 that we expect will lead to new and innovative ways to enhance the mobile music experience on the BlackBerry platform for U2 fans. We look forward to sharing more details as the relationship unfolds.”

Kevin already called it “sloppy thirds” on our behalf (thanks!) and while Apple is continuing to discover fresh new talent with every iTunes/iPod ad, RIM keeps just going where Apple’s long gone from. Wait, do we sense a trend here?
