What you need to know

  • It costs $99.
  • Compatible with all iPhone 12 models.
  • Ships starting next week.

On Tuesday, Apple quietly released a MagSafe Battery Pack (opens in new tab) for the iPhone 12 series. Priced at $99, the accessory comes only in white and begins shipping to customers next week.

The new MagSafe Battery Pack aligns with the magnets inside the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro series. It automatically charges without the need to turn it on or off. With a Lightning cable, you can expect 15W of wireless charging. With a higher than 20W power adapter, you can charge both the MagSafe Battery Pack and your iPhone even faster.

Apple's newest accessory doesn't ship with a cable or adapter. For the MagSafe Battery Pack, the iPhone maker suggests purchasing a 20W or higher USB-C Power Adapter and USB-C to Lightning Cable. Each is sold separately.

MagSafe is one of the iPhone 12's signature features. Its introduction last fall resulted in the launch of countless MagSafe-supported accessories by Apple and third-party vendors, including cases, wallets, charging docks, and more.

  • Comes in all colors of the rainbow, all at once.
  • Can you charge the battery pack directly with the MagSafe Charger or does it only charge directly with the lightning cable? I am referring specifically to charging the battery completely stand alone with no iPhone in the equation whatsoever.
