Alarms can be "set it and forget it". But they're also flexible and can be customized at any time. You can change when they go off, what they're called, and even the sound an alarm makes when it goes off. That way you can tell "get up!" from "get going", "leave for the gym" from "pick up the kids" without even having to look. And all thanks to the Clock app for iPhone and iPad!

How to change an alarm time on your iPhone or iPad

Your boss calls you to tell you that you can come in to the office late tomorrow. After fist pumping furiously for the appropriate amount of time to celebrate your incredible luck, you are going to want to push back that 5 AM alarm you normally use to a more reasonable time.

  1. Launch the Clock app from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on the Alarm tab. It's the second tab from the bottom left corner of your screen that looks like an alarm clock.
  3. Tap on the Edit button. It's located in the top left corner.

  4. Tap on the Alarm you want to change.
  5. Swipe the Scroll Wheels to set the hours, minutes, and AM/PM to reflect the new time you want your alarm ring.
  6. Tap the Save button. It's located in the top right corner of your screen.

There you have it. Now you can wake up at a more reasonable time. You can also use these steps to change any of the other settings associated with that alarm such as the label, the sound, the ability to snooze the alarm, and even if it repeats.

How to label an alarm on your iPhone or iPad

You can name your alarms so when they sound off a message will pop up. Labeling your alarms is a great way to remind yourself of things. If you wanted to set an alarm to remind you to take medication at a certain time or to catch your favorite show on TV, labeling your alarms is a great way to get your attention.

  1. Launch the Clock app from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on the Alarm tab. It's the second tab from the bottom left corner of your screen that looks like an alarm clock.
  3. Tap the Edit button. It's located in the top left corner of your screen.
  4. Tap on the alarm you want to re-label.

  5. Tap on the Label button.

  6. Use the keyboard to delete the default label.
  7. Type in your desired label.
  8. Tap the Done button. The blue button in the bottom right corner of your screen.

You can change the label of any alarm at any time by choosing to edit the alarm. This feature is super useful for us forgetful types because it can act as a very loud and obvious reminder of things we need to do. Do laundry, feed the cat, and call Mom — you can remember it all with labeled alarms.

How to change the alarm sound on your iPhone or iPad

Apple has preloaded the iPhone and iPad with a bunch of alarm sounds to choose from, the only real question is what sound to choose?

  1. Launch the Clock app from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on the Alarm tab. It's the second tab from the bottom left corner of your screen that looks like an alarm clock.
  3. Tap the Edit button. It's the in top left corner of your screen.
  4. Tap on the Alarm you want to sound different.

    Launch Clock, tap on the alarm tab, tap edit button, tap on the alarm.

  5. Tap on the sound button.
  6. Swipe up or down to find the sound you want.
  7. Tap on the sound you want. This will also preview the sound you selected.
  8. Tap on the Back button. It's located in the top left corner of your screen.

How to set a custom alarm sound on your iPhone or iPad

If the built-in alarm sounds just aren't up to your standards, you can easily change your alarm sound to a song. So not only will you wake up on time but, will wake up singing and dancing.

  1. Launch the Clock app from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on the Alarm tab. It's the second tab from the bottom left corner of your screen that looks like an alarm clock.
  3. Tap the Edit button. It's the in top left corner of your screen.
  4. Tap on the Alarm you want to sound different.

    Launch Clock, tap on the alarm tab, tap edit button, tap on the alarm.

  5. Tap on the sound tab.
  6. Scroll up to the top of the list.
  7. Tap on the Pick a song tab.

  8. There are several different way you can search for a song. Just simply tap on the option you think will be the best for you. While you can sort by groupings artist, albums, and playlists, you'll only be able to select one song from each grouping.

    • Compilations
    • Playlists


    Alternatively, you can type into the search bar at the top of the list to quickly find the song you want.

  9. Once you have found the song you want to select, tap on the song to add it as an alarm tone. You will be returned to the Sound selection page, with the new song already selected.
  10. Tap Back button.

    Tap on song.

You can choose as an alarm tone any song that you have purchased or synced onto your device. Unfortunately, you can't pick music streaming from Apple Music for a custom alarm tone.
