What you need to know

  • A new report says some iPhone users are reporting problems seeing SMS messages.
  • Specifically, iPhone 12 users are having issues with texts in both group chats and standalone conversation.
  • It is unclear how widespread the issue is, or what might be causing it.

A new report says that iPhone 12 users may be experiencing issues when it comes to displaying and receiving SMS messages, particularly from Android users.

As reported by MacRumors:

Since the release of the new iPhone 12 models, many new iPhone owners have been running into problems with the Messages app. There are complaints from users who aren't seeing SMS messages from friends, are missing text messages in group chats, and who aren't getting notifications when text messages are incoming.

MR notes that it is unclear at this stage whether the issues is related to iPhone 12, or a recent iOS 14 version, but that "the majority of complaints appear to be from iPhone 12 owners."

Problems reported include SMS message simply not appearing when sent from Android devices, one user complaining that having just upgraded to an iPhone 12, they had not received messages in a group chat from an Android user, despite them appearing on the sender's device.

Another cited the same problem, saying "It seems I'm having issues in group threads only when it has android users", noting that none of the conversations they were in had been making any sense in the last few days.

The report notes that some users are also reporting issues receiving standalone messages outside of group chats, and further issues where messages are received but without a notification.

One possible fix for Verizon users floated involves downloading the Verizon Message+ app if you're on that network or resetting your iPhone's network settings, which seems to have worked for at least one user. Otherwise, you might have to wait for a fix from either Apple or your respective carrier.

This issue has been ongoing since the iPhone 12 first came out. Two of iMore's editors (so far) have experienced this exact problem. iOS 14.2 did not solve the problem, though the issue seems to be intermittent, resolving and returning across different group chats.

Are you having similar issues? Or have you found a working fix? Let us know!

  • This is happening to me. I am involved with a family group chat and one of the members is an android user. I have had missing messages from iPhone users in that chat. iPhone 12 Pro
  • Mine is I can’t access all the pictures that have been sent to me overtime from info. The pictures are in the chat but not in info
  • I was having this issue, none of my children or wife could text me. They all could get my texts but I would not get their reply’s. After spending a few hours with a couple of Verizon techs. I found a solution, my family all have pixels and use google Messenger. On their phones I went into the message to me, clicked on the 3 dots in the upper right corner. Then went into details and toggled on send message as SMS or MMS. After doing that I receive their text messages now.
  • I'm having this problem. I'm not getting texts from Android users in my work group chats. iPhone 12 Pro.
  • My husband is complaining of whole group chats disappearing on his iPhone, but his model is a 7plus. The chats appear on his iPad, but they’re gone otherwise. I just ordered a 12 and now have buyers remorse...
  • I've been having issues as well. Had to go back to my iPhone after an issue with a warranty replacement on my Android. Until I downloaded Google Messages on my Android, I didn't receive a bunch of messages from other Android users. I think it has something to do with the Chat Features in the Google App. All the people I didn't get messages from use that app on their Android phone. It acts like iMessage but for Android users. I think there's an issue with the app Google hasn't addressed yet. When I was using the default message app on my ONE +8 5G or my iPhone 6s I didn't the messages from other Android users. Then a flood of messages came in when I set the Google app as my default message app.
  • I have an iPhone 11, and I’ve had some notifications issues. Latest ios14 update.
  • I'm in The same boat. Switched to Verizon as new customer and soon as my number was transferred to an iPhone 12 pro max , sms stopped coming from android users. As of right now I am canceling my service with Verizon as long as I'm in a 14 day grace period . I'm gonna lose my number but I had it after spending am entire day with tech support. I'm also switching away from apple devices . Just gonna buy an android phone and buy a prepaid sim somewhere.
  • iPhone 12 pro. Missing texts in group chats. Notice it more often when there’s an android user in the group. Don’t receive text notifications sometimes. My carrier is Verizon. I had tons of issues with the sound quality on my iPhone 11 Pro and was hoping for a better experience with the 12 pro.
