31x Limited has announced the release of Transport Tycoon, the first mobile version of the classic PC game. The game's been completely redesigned for the mobile experience, though it retains many of the classic elements that made Transport Tycoon such a beloved hit.
Transport Tycoon was the brainchild of Chris Sawyer, the game designer who would later go on to create the enormously popular Rollercoaster Tycoon game series. In Transport Tycoon, you build a transport empire comprising rail, ocean vessels, airplanes, trucks and buses as you move freight and passengers from city to city.
Not only are you responsible for the logistics of moving cargo and people, but you're responsible for the engineering behind it too - you have to build roads, railways, bridges, tunnels, seaports and airports to accommodate all your vehicles. Over 150 vehicles and 49 scenarios will keep you busy for a while.
The game features varied terrain like deserts, mountains and forests, and includes "real-world" scenarios that are modeled after events in North America and Europe in the 20th century. As a new mobile version, this game features an interface that's been thoroughly optimized for touch input.
And what's more, Transport Tycoon isn't encumbered with a wallet-draining In App Purchase system. $6.99 is the flat fee to play the game as much as you like. It's a universal app that runs natively on iPad and iPhone/iPod touch.
Did you ever play Transport Tycoon on your computer? Have you been looking forward to a mobile version? Tell me what you think in the comments.
