I have an unrelated question for you; what lens did you use for the photos on this page? I love the nice shallow depth of field and nice, smooth bokeh.

Nice article. I just went out and bought one of these after reading it.

Thanks!

The Wacom trackpad has many fewer gestures, does not support the Apple OS X gestures, is not asn sensitive, and is not wireless. They are really in a different league. Don't judge the trackpad by a few minutes in a store. Use it for an hour or two ad I bet you will like it. I have a wireless Logitech mouse sitting here for games but use the MT for everything else and love it.

Sean Peter,

I use a Magic Mouse and mine doesn't need to have its batteries changed often and I DON'T turn my mouse off. There are several ways to work with your complaints:
1. Buy NiMH batteries and a battery charger. I've already been doing this for 3+ years. I use a bluetooth keyboard and Magic Mouse (and soon Magic Trackpad). They all use rechargeable NiMH batteries. Have an extra set of batteries charged and ready to go. All of Apple's bluetooth peripherals gives off warnings when the battery is low and it takes several days before it actually is so low the device turns off. When the warning is given, simply head over to your NiMH charger and put in some batteries to top off the charge. When done, pop in these newly charged batteries to your device.

Or, you could buy Lithium batteries for them. You know, the original batteries that came with Apple's bluetooth devices were all Lithium ones. But, you CANNOT recharge Lithium batteries, you know that right? So, your last complaint made no sense.

I’d still like a real, rechargeable peripheral from Apple.

Amen. My wife has a Magic mouse, and what a pain in the rear - constantly out of battery at a critical moment (who thinks to turn off their %$#@ mouse? The answer would be not either of us), and if you happen to be out of AAs, you're out of mouse. The battery should be Li-ion, and you should be able to plug the damn thing in if need be to recharge.

@TK I bought a Bamboo tablet a few months ago. It's been sitting in a box ready to be resold or given away. The edges are too big (wasted space) at the same time it's too small to do any real graphics stuff on it (even signatures) if you have a large screen display because they try to map the pad to the display (the other option for the bamboo doesn't work any better)

Um, does the Trackpad support handwriting, especially for Asian languages? Like how it's done via the iPhone.

I guess that would be the biggest motivating factor if I were to be buying one.

@ fastlane- what do you use? Trackball? Wagon? Keyboard input?

I think is really great but given the choice, I'd have to go w/ the mouse still b/c of a few games I play. Also, if Apple wants mass-adoption, they need to offer it as a choice w/iMacs. I get that right now they probably don't have enough to do that but currently, people will be buying these in addition to a notebook trackpad or desktop mouse, seriously hindering mass adoption

Ps - I bought an MM for my MBP because I couldn't work exclusively off the trackpad.

@Rene - I thought you had a Macbook Air

It's a great idea but I cannot stand using trackpads. Never have. Never will. I have a MacBook pro with a mouse. The pad on it is great but doesn't give me the response of a mouse. One thing that would be impossible is using that to play games. A lot of work on your hands. I think it's good for casual people who use it to surf the net or have a media type set up but anything else I just can't see a use for.

Have you tried it for gaming, such as Starcraft 2 yet? It seems like trackpads would be better for gaming in some ways, but most games seem to be created with a mouse in mind.

I have a new Mac Mini connected to a Time Capsule and to my 42" Sony Bravia...great set-up.

What I really want is this magic pad to be part of a Bluetooth keyboard. How great would it be if Apple made a Bluetooth keyboard that had this magic pad to the right of the keyboard so everything was 1 piece? I would never leave the couch.

one question.

Can you pair this to MAC OS and use both the Trackpad and a USB mouse at the same time?

Like switch back and forth between the 2 without having to turn one off or on.

Like go from using the mouse, then switch to the trackpad for web surfing or something.

I knew desktop user hadnt to be bound to a darn mouse, i mean magic mouse still need more functions; to my opinion, and now having four fingers gestures on desktop= wow

Haven't used a mouse in over ten years. They need to be banished from existence already. Every time I try to use a friend's computer, the mouse is like a ball and chain around my hand.

Ughhh....

"Magic Trackpad doesn’t come in a fancy glass container like its magic mouse cousin."

Uhh, your Magic Mouse came in a glass container? Mine came in a plastic one. You must be very special. ;)
