How to enable button shapes on iOS 7.1

How to enable button shapes on iOS 7.1

If iOS 7's naked button look hasn't been to your liking, if it's made navigation harder to see and tap targets harder to hit, if you longed for the affordances of iOS 6-style outlines, then you'll be happy to know iOS 7.1 lets you get them at least part of the way back. That's right, hidden away under Accessibility Settings is a new option for... button shapes!

How to turn on button shapes in iOS 7.1 accessibility settings

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. On the next screen select Accessibility.
  4. Scroll down and now turn On the option for Button Shapes.

You should immediately see a gray outline on the General button in the menu bar, and all other menu bars. While it isn't a huge change, it does make finding and using buttons a little easier.

The button option also underlines anything that results in an action when tapped too. It's a great option for those that may be new to iOS and need some help learning the navigation.

Have you enabled button shapes on your iPhone or iPad or do you know someone that would benefit from the extra visual cues they offer? Let me know in the comments!

This is a sweet little tip. Would of never found it on my own.

Great tip, but I find the implementation of the buttons off. They don't look right. I turned them on then right off.

Same. In short, they are hideous but the darken colors ability is awesome!

Yeah, why couldn't they just add an outline?

bunkscene says:

Can you add an image that compares before and after? I don't see any difference...

bunkscene says:

Oh, now I see it. This is referring to the upper toolbar buttons.

Training wheels for iOS 7:)

Can anyone give some before and after pictures of what darken colors actually changes? I can't see a difference but I'm probably just not looking correctly :/

I thought I'd try living with them for a day to see if they grew on me, but I couldn't wait and turned them back off. They look provisional, like a cardboard sign with sharpie.

Thanks Ally :)

Ally, you should have before & after pictures of several of these effects so that everyone doesn't need to turn the features on & off in order to see the differences.

I tried the buttons and... wow, they're kind of ugly IMO. Oh well. I guess some option is better than no option. Hopefully someone will find them useful.
