How to markup photos in Messages in iOS 10 on your iPhone or iPad

Messages is an easy way to share photos with friends and family, and iOS 10's new Markup editor lets you add some extra flair to your images. While you can use the Markup editor in the Photos app, you can also do so from within the Messages app.

How to take and mark up an instant photo in Messages in iOS 10

  1. Launch the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the conversation in which you'd like to send a marked up photo.
  3. Tap on the camera button in the bottom-left corner. If the keyboard is up, tap the arrow next to the Compose box first.

  4. Tap the capture button on the camera panel at the bottom of your screen to take a photo. The photo will automatically appear in the Compose box.
  5. Tap the photo in the Compose box.
  6. Tap Markup.

  7. Markup your photo. You can draw on it, magnify certain spots, or add text, all in a variety of colors and styles.

  8. Tap Save.
  9. Tap Done.
  10. Tap the Send button (looks like an arrow).

How to mark up an existing photo in Messages in iOS 10

  1. Launch the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the conversation in which you'd like to send a marked up photo.
  3. Tap on the camera button in the bottom-left corner. If the keyboard is up, tap the arrow next to the Compose box first.

  4. Swipe to the left to scroll through recent photos.
  5. Swipe to the right and tap the Photo Library button to see your entire photo library and all of your albums.
  6. Tap the image or video you'd like to send. In recent photos, the picture will automatically appear in the Compose box. When viewing your whole library, tap Choose. Your photo or video will appear in the compose box.
