AirPlay Mirroring and iMessage on their way to the Mac?

According to “sources familiar with the future of Mac OS X”, AirPlay Mirroring and iMessage are both set to make an appearance in the not too distant future. The sources, talking to 9to5Mac claim that both of these applications are in development although they could be shelved just as easily.

AirPlay Mirroring would certainly be a welcome addition to the Mac OS X platform, allowing a user to mirror the screen of their Mac without the need for an expensive projector. You could see Apple TV’s popping up in company boardrooms attached to smaller LCD panels.

TiPb Asks: Are your TV and movie apps working with iOS 5 AirPlay Mirroring?

While we haven't had time to test all of them, but off the bat we're getting mixed results with AirPlay Mirroring of iPad 2 TV and movie apps. CityTV wouldn't work -- it cited contractual obligations. CTV did work and so did Global. Crackle was buggy. We're trying more now.

Some TV and movie apps use Apple's built in media controls so AirPlay works automagically. Others... have opted out. We were kind of hoping AirPlay Mirroring would let us work around it. Maybe it will. Or maybe Hollywood will update to shut it out of more apps. We shall see.

Apple releases new iPhone commercials for AirPlay, FaceTime

Continuing their new "if you don't have an iPhone" campaign, Apple began showing two new iPhone 4 commercials tonight -- FaceTime and AirPlay. FaceTime demos iPhone-to-iPhone video calling, which has been a staple for Apple since iPhone 4 was released. It also demos iPhone-to-Mac and iPhone to iPad FaceTime, however, which is new. AirPlay highlights playing music from the iPod app on your home stereo and watching photos or movies on your Apple TV. (Of course, iOS 5 AirPlay mirroring will make a future commercial like that much, much more exciting...)

I'm still not a huge fan of the "if you don't have an iPhone" preamble, but at least these get back to more customer facing features, unlike the 3 store ads we had recently. (But hey, at least they're not trying to sell your wife a Tegra 2 processor...!)

Check them out after the break.

AirPlay is now available for your Windows Media Center box. It was only a matter of time after the AirPlay encryption keys were cracked that we would start to see AirPlay appearing on other platforms. Now it has been ported to the very popular Windows Media Center.

Developer Thomas Pleasance has put together a simple install package that does its magic and sure enough, once installed, your Media Center box appears on your iOS device as AirPlay capable.
