Sure, you can add a task to a list in the Reminders app. But if you really want to get things done, you can add due date to your reminder... or even a due location. That way you can get alerts not only for specific times, but when you leave or arrive at specific places as well. Never forget to take the pizza out the oven, call home when you leave work, or pick up milk when you get to the store again!

How to create a reminder on iPhone and iPad

First things first, let's create a new reminder in an existing Reminders list.

  1. Launch the Reminders app from the Home screen.
  2. Tap on the list you wish to add a reminder to, or create a new list.
  3. Tap the Add Reminder button to bring up the keyboard. It's a plus sign on the left side of your list.

  5. Tap Done to add the entry to the list.

How to add an alert with a due date to a reminder on iPhone and iPad

It's easy to set a due date for a task. Whether it's something mundane as reminders when it's garbage day, or an important weekly meeting with a client, once you've set up a reminder alert you'll be notified so you're always on top of what needs to get done.

  1. Launch the Reminders app from the homescreen.
  2. Tap the list to which you would like to add a timed reminder.
  3. Tap an existing reminder.
  4. Tap the Info button to edit the details of the reminder entry. It's a lower case 'i' in a circle.

  5. Tap the switch next to Remind me on a day to turn it on. More options will appear on your screen.
  6. Tap Alarm to change the date and time of the reminder alert.
  7. Swipe up and down on the picker to choose a date and time.
  8. Tap Done in the top right corner.

If you need to edit the time or date of the alert, just follow the same steps.

Alternatively, you can use 3D Touch to quickly create or edit a time-based alert.

  1. Launch Reminders from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on the list containing the reminder you'd like to add an alert to.
  3. Firmly press (3D Touch) on the reminder to reveal the 3D Touch options
  4. Tap Remind me on a day to jump straight to the Reminders details screen.

How to create a repeating alert due date in Reminders on iPhone and iPad

You can also set a time-based alert to repeat on a regular schedule, if you want a reminder every Sunday night to put the garbage out on the curb or whatever regularly occurring task or event you want a reminder for.

  1. Launch Reminders from your Home screen.
  2. Tap the list that contains the reminder you what to add an alert to.
  3. Tap the reminder you want to add an alert to or create a new one.

  4. Tap the info button to the right of the reminder. It's a lower case 'i' in a circle.
  5. Tap Repeat to bring up a list of common options for regular reminders, such as daily, weekly, monthly and yearly alerts. If you do not see the Repeat button, then you'll need to tap the switch next to Remind me on a day and set a date and time.
  6. Tap and option or tap Custom to go way more in-depth and set a specific schedule for regularly occurring events or things you want to be reminded about.

  7. Tap the back button on the top left of your screen to set the custom alert settings and go back to the Repeat screen.
  8. Tap the back button again to set the repeat options and go back to the edit reminder details screen.
  9. Tap Done when you're happy with your notification alert options.

If you need to change the time or date for an alert, just follow the same steps.

How to add a location-based alert in Reminders for iPhone and iPad

GPS-location services are built into so many apps and services throughout the iOS platform, it only makes sense to have them in the Reminders app as well. You can set things up so your phone will remind you of something important when you're arriving or leaving a location, so you'll never leave the house without your lunch in the morning.

  1. Launch Reminders from the Home screen.
  2. Tap the list to which you want to add a location-based reminder alert.
  3. Tap an existing reminder or create a new one.
  4. Tap the info button to edit the details of the reminder entry.

  5. Tap the switch next to Remind me at a location. Once turned on, a location option will appear.
  6. Tap Location.
  7. Tap Allow to allow Reminders to access your location while using the app. Tap Don't Allow if you don't want it to. You'll see a search bar at the top, populated with locations that have been saved on your iPhone through the Maps app. You will also see important locations added to your contact card, such as home and work addresses.

  8. Tap the search bar if you can't find the location you want in the list. You can search for addresses or businesses the same way you would in Maps.
  9. Tap on the desired location to bring up a map with the location pinned. You'll immediately notice a blue halo around the pin to adjust the radius.
  10. Tap When I Arrive or When I Leave to determine when you want to get the location-based alert.

    Tap the search bar and enter a search, tap the location you want, tap either When I Arrive or When I Leave

  11. Tap and drag the black dot to adjust the range in which the alert is triggered. The minimum distance from the location you can set is 328 feet, and the maximum is 1500 miles.
  12. Tap the back button in the top left of your screen to go back to the reminder details screen.
  13. Tap Done in the top right of your screen.
