I was given an iphone3g from a friend when she upgraded to iphone4. Cant download anything without it poping up with an itunes window with her email address and prompts for her password. I think when the phone is changed to a different account user all old info should be deleted. And the one other thing I don’t like is not being ablr to just download a ringtone like all other phones I have owned.

THANK YOU for a well written and very thorough presentation of the new iPhone software. I’m a long-time Mac user but a relative newbie with regards to the iPhone, having purchased my first one a few weeks ago. I am still in learning mode with regard to some of the shortcuts and less well documented features. For example, the section you wrote on Voice Control was the first place I’ve seen a comprehensive list of what you can (and cannot) do with voice commands. Well done! Does the TNS (Push Notifications Service) sorta/kinda make the iPhone 3GS a multitasking device insofar as you'd be getting IM's, or at least we're notified that there are unread IM's available for review!??

Chances are you have multiple Calendars are your iPhone and the default one is not an exchange Calendar (hence invitees are not an option) — this was what ended up being my problem. To resolve, go to settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Scroll down to the calendar section. There tap the default Calendar option and choose a different default calendar — worked for me!

Anyone having a problem with the camera not letting you view your pictures after upgrading to 3.0 on a pc.When I go to the photos app it shows that my camera roll has 20 pictures. But when I try to view them it shows me a screen saying “you have no photos, you can take photos using the camera”. How do I fix this problem it is really annoying me.

Just came back to check this out again as I’ve now got a stereo bluetooth headset and was hunting for info. Like a few others, I don’t have the phishing setting in Safari. It seems more than daft to not have this for all hardware. Can anyone confirm that it just applies to the 3GS?

The new 3.0 softwere will down load, decompress then when it gets to backup proccess it dies. It says it can not backup phone. Restart again. I am up todate on all other related software. Yes I changed the cable. Made sure there was 50 gig on the drive. It is an new HP running Vista SP1. Any thoughts?

This deal with AT&T is getting ridiculous. New features like internet tethering and the ability to send multimedia text messages are wonderful. Except Apple forces us to have AT&T as the carrier and then (duh) AT&T doesn’t offer this functionality. I imagine in the next few months, this could cause Apple to lose a lot of customers. I’ve loved my iPhone since I got it but this is a HUGE turnoff – a basic feature that EVERY other carrier and smartphone offers (MMS). Grr.

One new feature of 3.0 that I had not seen reported that I experienced this morning was how it deals with entering a WIFI location that requires you to go through a splash page to accept terms. Previously if you entered a new WIFI location (like when I enter a hospital) my phone would kick over to it, but I had to open Safari to go through the authentication splash page and accept the terms…ie had to jump out of mail or whatever else. this morning when I entered the hospital while checking email a new splash screen popped up within the email App and allowed me to accept the terms without jumping off and starting Safari. Quite a time saver. I didn’t test it out with other 3rd party Apps to see if it works like that for all of them.

Also used the auto-login at Starbucks this AM, much quicker!

What a rip off….i should of just stayed with verizon! Does anyone definitively know if the stereo bluetooth works in the Prius 2010? My phone was paired to the car's bluetooth and when i played a song, i don't believe I saw the bluetooth icon to the right of the volume slider. Any help would be appreciated.

There is addition info listed in the “recents” tab in the phone area. It shows whether the call was received or sent, and which number it is if the person has multiple numbers. Very nice!

They need an update soon again. There’s some bugs that are annoying me. Everytime in configure under the App Store and exit, then go back to the App Store, it doesn’t save my changes. & sometimes there’s a glitch (somewhat) when I switch to landscape mode in texting. Last thing, when will AIM and all these other apps update to Push Notification!?

Just finished downloading the 3.0 software on my 3G. The update was pretty quick although I realized that I’m missing a few things. 1) I don’t see the little camera on the bottom left side of the text messaging screen, used to take and attach photos is a message. 2) Don’t have the “NOTIFICATIONS” showing in settings. 3) missing the “invitees” option in my calendar. Is anyone else missing any features?

One of the best walk through’s I have seen for the 3.0 software. It was a great read as I was downloading it and (now) installing. Thank you for the hard work and level of detail – really appreciated.

@shawn not sure about new apps or why we need new apps today. But most apps have already updated their software as the SDK has been out for “ages”. Personally it is more about the phone than the apps – they are added extras. I was really looking for great functionality and making up for the features that were lacking. Looks like we have most of that so I am happy

when i go to messages and write a long message it seems to take up the whole page, before it allowed you to scroll. therefore i cannot see any previous texts i have been sent. has anyone else found this? and what do you find it as annoying as i do?

One thing I noticed that was not covered here (fantastic right up. learned alot, thank you), is that when you click “Get More Episodes” on a podcast it actually takes you directly to the podcast on itunes. In 2.x it just opened the store and you had to search for the show then download (which annoyed me to no end).

For the past few days I have been trying to convince myself that the 3gs might be worth it. After updating to 3.0 and reading Engadget's review I must say for current 3g owners there is absolutely no reason to upgrade unless you love mobile games. Other than that I saw no significant speed enhancements with the primary OS and small things like the letter getting "stuck" while typing I can deal with.

Had Apple introduced the 3GS as a Pro type model with multitasking then I might have bought it but as of now 3.0 is a beauty, snappy and I like it.

The only thing I don't like is that 1) I have to wait to Friday to Jailbreak 2) No MMS 3) Why can't we have voice control again?

A couple of quick comments. One, I just updated my iPod touch (gen 1) no problems.

The shake to shuffle on music is kind of cool, the unified search is nice. Haven’t played with copy/paste yet but that is a big deal, regardless of wishing it was available months ago.

Also, the Google Maps update is sweet (previously unavailable for the iPod touch), and I esp. like the workflow ease of looking in my immediate area, searching for a restaurant by name, seeing it on the map, clicking, seeing street view and then being able to add to address book.

All of that said, I want to put a bow around fact that this release is somewhat akin to a “block the kick” by Apple to keep developers from even contemplating developing for Android, Pre or Blackberry, so most of the feature adds are to drive developers to do even cooler stuff.

That may seem like a “SO WHAT” if you just plunked down $9.95 for the touch upgrade (as I did), but when then next 50K apps roll out, and a quarter of them take advantage of things like hardware accessory support within apps; multi-player gaming; add levels/stories/virtual goods, the new mapping and media APIs, you will be a happy camper.

Final note. Many forums are bemoaning server delays, lack of app store access today.

It’s nature of the beast, when 10M people (a guess, figuring 25% out of 40M devices) simultaneously try to access and download a big fat binary, so expect delays.

If that freaks you out, wait until tomorrow. It’s not like they will run out of software.

iPhone 3G - no video or voice command support???? Come on Apple that is totally weak.

Cracked apps allow for video and other apps allow for voice commands so this seems to be pretty obviously done to sell more 3GS. Of course they need to make their $$$ but artificially limiting features to existing customers is weak. Judging by past history Apple loves to do this.

I have video now and was thinking that I wouldn't have to crack my phone after the 3.0 upgrade.....no such luck

IM information can now be stored in Contacts!

It wasn’t mentioned in the review, but I noticed it when I updated my iPod touch to 3.0 earlier today. Previously, instant messaging User IDs didn’t sync over from your computer, nor could you add that information to a contact from within the iPhone or iPod touch. Now you can!

From my perspective this is a very welcome addition, and finally gets the available Contact fields on par with my old Palm Treo.

Re: Clock "The Clock app gets a minor tweak — you get a lap display in the upper right hand corner of the Stop Watch. While the main stopwatch shows total time as always, the lap counter shows only the time passed since you last hit the lap button."

The "shows total time as always" is not true. Until this revision, the "main stopwatch" showed lap time, NOT total time. In fact, total time wasn't displayed anywhere. This has been a bug that took Apple until the 3.0 update to finally get right! Yay!!!

I just tested it, and scrubbing seems to work the same way on TV shows – only it doesn’t give the the text hint when you to move your finger lower to do finer scrubbing as it does with podcasts or songs … it definitely has different scrubbing behavior even with videos.

One excellent difference between copy/paste on MacOSX and iPhone OS (at least for the beta I used) was that the pasteboard is restored after restart. That is, you can copy-restart-paste, and the phone “remembers” what to copy. Awesome!

Argh! I was really hoping for the option to turn on/off images in Safari. With the 1st gen iPhone on Edge network, there’s far too many image intensive websites which crash Safari. Hopefully the new browser engine will reduce the need for this and I won’t have to jailbreak anymore.

Actually, you’re wrong about the calculator. They added copy and paste, but more importantly they integrated it so it will work like the memory function (which I’ve never found particularly intuitive). Type a number, click on the readout area and select Copy, click C (clear). Now do a bunch of other calculations, click + (or any other operator), click on the readout and select Paste, click = and you’ll get your answer just like you’d expect. Pretty slick.

One thing that isn’t being talked about much, but is going to make a huge impact over the coming months. Safari in iPhone 3.0 is now location aware. One of the reasons behind many apps eing developed was to leverage the GPS functions of the phone. Something that browsers could never do. With the advent of the location aware Safari, this function is now available to web developers and not just app developers. We got it working at Surfline in anticipation of todays launch:

On a iPhone3.0 has a working location button at top right that locates your nearest surf spots. (Will only work if you’re on the coast somewhere!)

I just tried to download it, and it said “the iphone activation server is temporarily unavailable.” what does that mean?

I am on AT&T. As stated above, Notifications showed up once I accessed a 3rd party application that uses push notifications. This seems to confirm that custom notification sounds are ONLY available for 3rd part apps.

I am also not able to see any of the Anti-Fraud options.

Just got the “We could not complete your iTunes Store request. Make sure your network setting..” while I was installing 3.0. Now phone is locked

Well...I got 3.0 installed. So far I am impressed. However, I do have one major disappointment (besides not allowing video on the 3G). I was hoping that with the new notification settings, I would finally be able to assign custom notification sounds to each individual email account. Unfortunately, it appears Apple is still not allowing that. So I still have three email accounts and no idea which one has just received a message until I open up email.

Heck! You don't even see the notification setting under Settings until you've activated notifications on a 3rd party app.

Finally, the initial backup after installing is painstakingly slow...but that was somewhat expected.

WTF? Anyone else get the 3.0 update on AT&T and find features missing? The entire “Notifications” section in options is completely gone, the Anti-Fraud option isn’t available…this an issue for anyone else?
