How to change the auto-lock time on your iPhone or iPad

The auto-lock feature on the iPhone and iPad lets you control how long you want the screen to stay on when the device isn't being used. The shorter the amount of time you set it for, the faster the screen will go off due to inactivity. A shorter auto-lock time will make your iPhone or iPad prompt for a passcode faster, which results in better security. Not to mention battery life can improve since the screen isn't on as often. Follow along and we'll show you how to edit your auto-lock settings.

How to change how quickly your iPhone or iPad auto locks

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Now choose the Auto-Lock option.
  4. Tap on the option you'd like for your iPhone or iPad.

That's it. Your iPhone or iPad will now abide by the auto-lock time you've selected. If you use auto-lock, what do you have it set for? Let me know what you chose and why in the comments!

How to change the auto-lock time on your iPhone or iPad

Very good Ally, there are many people I know that just leaves it as default. I love your articles!

Around the house/work/local area, I typically set mine to lock after an hour. When I am out of town I will typically change it to lock after one minute. For example, recently spent a week vacationing in Orlando/Disney World. Would be easy to drop/ lose.

Wish there was an 'auto always on' feature till your desired download(a) completed.

Side note: The device will NOT auto-lock when plugged in and streaming music. That's an OS feature. :)

I need to set auto lok on my i6 phone for 30 min as I do with my iPad but that option is not available on the phone. It's either 5min or never. This runs (never) the battery down significantly

I needed to lengthen the time before the auto lock shutdown feature engages because the IPad does not recognize listening to an audio [as in Time magazine audio articles] as the device remaining in use. It would be helpful if Apple would reprogram their devices to correct this problem.

What a narrow set of options! I wonder what Apple's logic is behind these choices. I would like autolock to be on Never when connected to USB only.
