Samsung making 3% investment in Apple display provider Sharp

Samsung is taking a 3% stake in Japanese company Sharp, a major Apple component supplier. Sharp will use Samsung’s $110 million investment to show bank lenders that their LCD business continues to be viable. Interestingly, Sharp is not only a long-time partner of Apple, but also a long-time rival of Samsung. The two companies have historically been competitors in both the display panel and television markets. Samsung’s investment signals a change in that relationship, as well as a boon for Samsung, as Min-Jeong Lee And Juro Osawa of the Wall Street Journal report:

Shots of supposed iPad mini display leak

Pictures of what are supposed to be the display of the unannounced iPad mini have surfaced recently. The dimensions measure 162 mm x 124 mm, which works out to the same 4:3 aspect ratio of the full-sized iPad.

New iPad Retina displays rumored to be coming from LG and Samsung

Sharp was supposed to be supplying screens for the new iPad, but they were apparently unable to meet Apple's exacting standards, and instead Samsung and LG will be making the Retina displays. iSuppli has suggested that it's only Samsung providing the panels, but other sources have said that LG is a part of the supply deal too, even though they may not be shipping screens until April.

Apple Stores merry with FaceTime Santa displays

Adding to the endless Beatles loops and festive iPad snow globes, Apple Stores now have their very own FaceTime Santa in the windows, spreading Christmas cheer to boys, girls, families, elves, and Mrs. Clause alike.

I caught this one on video at my local Apple Store tonight. Have you seen FaceTime Santa at yours yet? Any idea how he explains to the kids that they can indeed have an iPhone 4 under the tree but they have to ask daddy and mommy to foot the bill for the monthly voice and data plans?
