One does not simply pull an iPhone whole from the void and birth it in a single day. As anyone involved in the design, development, and manufacturing of iPhone-class products will tell you, it takes a long, long time and roadmaps typically stretch out over years. So, it comes as little surprise that the next two generations of iPhone, likely including an S-type update to the current iPhone 5, began under the direction of Steve Jobs. Still, given Jobs legacy, hearing it reaffirmed again seems to make many people happy. Which brings us to Mike Aldrax's report in the San Francisco Examiner:

If Apple sticks to their current pattern, there'll be an iPhone 5S later this year, and the iPhone 5 will drop to $100 on-contract, the iPhone 4S will drop to free on-contract, and the iPhone 4 will be retired. If Apple sticks to their current pattern, there'll be an iPhone 6 in 2014, and the iPhone 5S will drop to $100 on-contract, the iPhone 5 will drop to free on-contract, and the iPhone 4S will be retired.

But Apple doesn't always stick to their current patterns...

Chinese source claims iPhone 5S as well as a 5-inch iPhone 6 to launch this year

According to a Chines media outlet, Apple is rumoured to be planning on releasing two iPhone models later this year. The first model is the expected iPhone 5S which will have the same form factor as the current iPhone 5 and the second rumored release will be the device that we keep hearing about, the 5-inch iPhone.

There'll be an iPhone 5S and iPhone 6. There'll be a Retina iPad mini. There'll be a thinner, lighter iPad 5. There'll be an Apple A7 system-on-a-chip. There'll be an LTE radio that can do simultaneous voice and data, and eventually voice over LTE. There may be curved displays, biometric sensors and security, 4K AirPlay, onboard voice parsing, in-air gesture and face recognition, and much, much more. Apple's hardware will continue to tick tock its way towards the future, but for mainstream users, most of the time, the devices we hold in our hands today are more than good enough. And it's the stuff inside and around them that's become far, far more important.

Apple rumored to be testing Touch on Display screen tech for next iPhone

Apple is rumored to be testing a new screen technology for the next iPhone, manufactured by Innolux, called “Touch on Display”. It's said to be both thin a durable, and could potentially fix problems that have been associated with the current in-cell technology, namely buggy touch responsiveness when swiping at extreme angles.

Going big

In 2012 Apple increased the screen size of the iPhone from 3.5- to 4-inches, and introduced the iPad mini with a 7.9- rather than 9.7-inch screen. Between those devices, the old-but-still-on-the-market iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, and the iPad mini and iPad, there's a noticeable gap. No 4.5- to 5-inch phone. At least for now.

iPhone 5 will support HSPA+ 4G technology

During a presentation at Macworld Asia, China Unicom revealed that, as long and widely rumored, iPhone 5 will support HSPA+ networks.

Japanese IT news site "PC Watch" tells that, Research vice president of China Unicom, Huan Wenliang, told iPhone 5 will support W-CDMA based high-speed data transfer standard HSPA Evolution "HSPA+" (21Mbps) at keynote speech in Macworld Asia 2011.
