AssistantExtensions is a jailbreak app for iPhone 4S that greatly enhances what you can do with Apple’s Siri virtual assistant, including voice activation, app launching, translation, and more. Developers can even add their own, custom commands via a new plug-in architecture. That means, unlike the limited built-in functionality Apple provides, many more powerful, and interesting, commands become available.

AssistantExtensions bundles a number of commands together, including the ability to send tweets from Siri, and an interesting “chat mode” where Siri loads additional content so she/he can better have a conversation with you (though the server load must be heavy as it frequently experiences time outs).

For even more functionality, AssistantExtensions lets developers create custom commands and tasks using Siri. You can already use AssistantExtensions to access SBSettings to quickly toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane mode, etc. Hopefully more and more jailbreak developers start integrating support.

Out of the box, you can use Siri to activate SBSettings toggles or launch apps without even touching your iPhone — a great way to increase efficiency when using Siri. The only issues we’ve noticed with AssistantExtensions are random conflicts with SiriToggles, although other users have seen mixed reports.

Looking for a great way to keep tabs on the Obama administration? The White House for iPhone is your best pick, giving you access to news, photos and video of what’s happening at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

Not only will you have direct access to their blog, which is more of a news source than anything else, but you’ll also be able to browse through archived photos, video and more. I was able to watch the State of the Union address in its entirety earlier this week without strapping myself down to a desk or television. Instead, I just whipped out my iPhone and within a few minutes I was watching the livestream — no questions asked.

Next to the plethora of content, media and information about The White House at your fingertips, you can also setup push notifications to be notified of any major news stories going on in the political realm. Overall, it’s a great resource and the livestream feature is a lifesaver.

Zite Personalized Magazine – @sethclifford

Flipboard is the app that everyone likes talking about, but there’s actually a few new apps that are doing stylish news aggregation pretty well. One that I’ve really been enjoying lately is Zite, which takes a similar approach to Flipboard, but allows you to customize your reading experience over time by voting stories up or down and then learning what it is you prefer to read and giving you more tailored content.

The setup for the app is pretty simple, and I really like the clean UI. There’s really not much to get in the way and the content really takes center stage. I feel like it’s easier to browse than Flipboard, and while the Flipboard UI conventions are cool, don’t get me wrong – after a while, I feel like I’m really working to see new content, and I don’t feel like I can scan as quickly on my phone (which is a prime criteria for consuming news on the go). Zite feels like it allows me to do that more easily.

The customization aspects are cool too – you basically give stories a thumbs-up or thumbs-down, and Zite will remember what it is you liked and in the future return more content like it. There’s a lot of detail here as to how this is all accomplished, and since I’ve only been using it a short time, I can’t speak to its accuracy yet. Also, the type of feeds I’m looking at (tech stuff) usually have a bit of overlap, so it’s hard for me to tell right now. I’m less concerned with teaching the app though, and more concerned with the quickness of information and scanning, and it definitely succeeds there. But the app’s main draw is the personalization of content, so don’t let my particular use-case dissuade you from trying it out. It’s free and a really nice way to get your news.

Messages+ – @iMuggle

I can not explain how happy I am to have a jailbreak on my iPhone 4S. Along with a new jailbreak comes tons of updated utilities and applications for iOS 5. I’ve been using IntelliscreenX and with it comes Messages+. I’ve been a long time fan of BiteSMS but I’m really loving the tight integration Messages+ has with iOS. There’s no separate application or icon, it just works. There’s really nothing to configure. Just set up a quick reply action via Activator and you’re good to go.

You can view images and files right from the quick reply window and then dismiss them. The UI blends perfectly with the default UI of iOS so it looks like something Apple themselves would have made. If you’re jailbroken and haven’t checked out Messages+ yet, I’d give it a try! If you already have IntelliscreenX, you already have a license for it and it comes built-in. If you don’t, you can buy Messages+ separately.

Going back to a #TeamPure iPhone – @chrisoldroyd

This week I decided to give the new Absinthe Jailbreak a go on my iPhone 4S. I have always tinkered around with jailbroken devovces and do love apps like BiteSMS and SBSettings. This time the experience has been awful for me.

Installing the jailbreak was simple enough, I had to wait a bit longer as I am a Windows user. Anyway, to cut a long story short, my phone is all jailbroken in minutes and I installed BiteSMS and SBSettings and nothing more. A few days later and I try and listen to my music in the car and things start to go terribly wrong. Album artwork shows the wrong song playing and most songs start to play then stop or don’t play at all.

I turned iTunes Match on and off, and even synced again with iTunes, transferring all my music back on manually, still the same issue. Only option I had was to go back to a stock install and lose my jailbreak. That is where I am at now and guess what? Yep my music is now perfect again!

I don’t watch a lot of TV and the shows I do want to watch are usually found on iTunes or Netflix but there isn’t a lot of good stuff out there these days any how in my opinion. For filling that void, I often scour the web looking for good online content to watch when I have some spare time but keeping track of that stuff has proven to be a difficult task over time. For Christmas I got an AppleTV and found Squrl. Squrl basically aggregates a lot of popular online video sites and various other content providers and provides a beautiful UI that allows for tracking videos, saving them for later viewing. Couple that with an AppleTV and you can amass plenty of content to watch in place of television shows. Social network integration as well as netflix, it has become a key resource of entertainment for me and it’s available for free in the iTunes App Store.

Rdio – @jdipane

Music is a huge part of my life, and the ability to have almost any song at my fingertips without eating up all the space on my iPhone is a huge plus for me. Rdio is a subscription based service similar to Spotify, but I find that more songs that I enjoy to listen to are available through Rdio. Whether I want to select a certain song, album or just listen to a particular artists stations I can do so with a few simple clicks from within the application. I have various playlist’s set up, one for work out, one to relax, and I can add and remove songs with ease. Rdio also ties in with my home Sonos system which is great as I can listen to the music through my headphones, the speaker of the device or through the Sonos to keep me motivated. Puzzle Juice – @JorjLim

Tetris? Boggle? If you can’t decide which game to play, then Puzzle Juice is a sure winner.

The game starts as a standard game of Tetris; coloured blocks fall from the top of the screen, and you have to form a line at the bottom to score points.

However, unlike traditional Tetris, once you’ve completed a line, it won’t disappear. Instead, every block will turn into a letter and you’ll have to form words to score even more points. Here’s the fun part; while you’re looking for words, the next Tetris block has started falling. If you need more letters to form a word, tap on 3 same-colour blocks that are adjacent to one another to reveal more letters. There is also an optional Zen Mode, which challenges you to score as many points as you can in 90 seconds.

The game itself is well designed and even the menu screens have a pinch of character. You won’t see a “Ok”, or “Start” button throughout the game, instead you’ll see phrases like “Sounds Peachy” and “Totally Got It”, just to add that extra flare to the game.

The game is a mind-game, a fun-game and a challenging game all wrapped into one neat parcel, and will keep you busy for hours!

Doodlecast Pro

My day job is teaching two Intermediate Algebra courses at my local community college and this semester I’m experimenting with making videos for my students on new or difficult topics. Doodlecast Pro for iPad has turned out to be the best app to help me accomplish this. It records both my voice and handwriting and allows me to export and upload my videos directly to YouTube. If I made some mistakes along the way that I want to edit out, I can export to my Camera Roll instead and edit in another application like Avid Studio or iMovie. My only complaint is that the handwriting strokes are not really that great. I would love to see Doodlecast match the quality of handwriting to apps like Penultimate and Noteshelf.

My favorite right now is Lab Timer. It’s a free universal app that gives you 16 timers. They’ll count up or down and will sound an alarm. It’s handy for work so I can have a break timer, a lunch timer and can time how long a process is taking all from the same app. It’s especially handy for the iPad since there is no built-in clock app.

If you’re a jailbreaker looking to add a little more speed and functionality to multitasking on your iPhone or iPod touch, you’ll want to check out Zephyr. We have talked about Zephyr before but we’ll give you a close up look at what it does and the additional functionality it provides. There isn’t much to configure after you install Zephyr which makes it easy to use and it’s fully compatible with iOS 5.

The main purpose of Zephyr is to add additional multitasking gestures to your device. It adds the ability to swipe left and right on your springboard in order to page through apps. Swiping up will allow you to close out of an app as well. This is perfect for users who may have a broken home button on their iPhone 4, are out of warranty, and don’t want to attempt a DIY home button repair themselves.

You can always choose which swipe motions you want to have enabled. Ones you don’t want enabled you can simply toggle off in Settings. In addition to enabling or disabling gestures you can also add application restrictions. This is ideal for situations where the keyboard is active and you may not want a swipe gesture to switch apps or close out the application. This is also a good option for games that require you to swipe so Zephyr doesn’t attempt to switch between applications or close it out. If you’d like to get things done quicker and have better application switching functionality than what iOS offers stock, Zephyr is definitely worth checking out.

How do you record the screen of your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad? That’s the question several of our readers have asked this week. Sure, you can use a fancy HDMI-out dongle and a video capture card to mirror and record your display if you have the hardware and can get it working right. But if you’re jailbroken there’s an easier way to go about recording your iPhone or iPad display.

Yes, there’s a jailbreak app for that!

Cydia, the Jailbreak app store, has a little something that should suit your screen recording needs pretty well. It’s called Display Recorder and it allows you to take screen recordings directly on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Once you’re done, you can choose to upload the screen recording to YouTube or connect over Wi-Fi and move it over to your computer.

I’ve used Display Recorder in the past for tutorials and walk-throughs. You can adjust the output quality and file type as well. The only down side I’ve found to Display Recorder is that it doesn’t record audio. I’ve always solved this problem by recording the audio with voice memos or another external microphone and editing them together in iMovie or a similar program.

Display Recorder is available in Cydia now and is already compatible with iOS 5.

Snappy5 for iOS 5 is a new jailbreak mod in Cydia that brings instant access to the iPhone camera no matter what you’re doing.

Never miss a photo opportunity again!

It is a camera application that launches quickly, without having to exit your currently running application. This is a free upgrade, but it is not compatible with 3.x and 4.x iOS versions.

Although Apple does include camera access from the iPhone lock screen in iOS 5, the app still technically needs to be launched before you’ll be able to snap a photo. As such, it still takes a measurable amount of time to launch the camera.

Snappy5 rids this issue by implementing a mobile substrate extension tie-in, which gives near-instant access to the camera no matter where you are. Another great feature is snap on launch, which takes a photo the moment Snappy5 is called up. If you’re in an app, at your home screen, or have your iPhone locked – you won’t have to worry about missing that special moment with Snappy5.

Zephyr by chpwn has been updated to version 1.0.2-1 with a few more enhancements. For starters, you can now disable gestures in any app you choose. This is handy for games and apps that may cause you to unintentionally invoke a gesture. It looks as if he’s gotten help with this feature from Ryan Petrich, creator of Display Recorder, one of my favorite jailbreak apps.

Other features added include the ability to enable per-gesture commands as opposed to them all being global by default. So if you want multitasking gestures on your iPhone, you can find Zephyr in Cydia for $2.99.

Zephyr by chpwn has been updated to version 1.0.1 to add a few enhancements and fix a few existing bugs. Among the changes are fixes to disable multitasking gestures within apps such as Cut the Rope or Words with Friends where you may not want gestures to be active.

For those not familiar, Zephyr adds multitasking gestures to the iPhone similar to those found on the iPad. It registers bezel to screen swipes to allow a much easier way to multitask and switch between apps than the options you are given stock. If you jailbreak you may soon be able to add even more functionality to Siri via SiriPrefs. While A5 devices aren’t jailbreakable yet, jailbroken A4 devices have the ability to run Siri via the Spire port.

SwitcherCleaner is new jailbreak mod in Cydia that changes the behavior of the multitasking Fast App Switcher to only show apps that are actually running in the background, and keeps the quit button visible at all times.

AlbumArt on AppSwitcher does exactly what the title says – adds album art to your app switcher. I personally like having this functionality because I have a tendency to forget what songs come from what albums. This way I don’t have to jump into my iPod app, I can simply bring up my app switcher and look without having to stop what I’m doing.

Once installed from Cydia there’s nothing to configure or set up, it should just work. It’s available for free and requires iOS 5.0 or higher.

BiteSMS, one of the best jailbreak apps available for the iPhone and iPod touch, has recently been pushed out of beta to version 6.0 with full support for iOS 5. The update brings along a number of new features as well — here’s the full change log:

If you’re jailbroken on iOS 5 you’ll definitely want to check out the newly released Springtomize 2. It’s by far one of the easiest ways to customize your device running on iOS 5. To start customizing just purchase Springtomize 2 in Cydia then pop into your Settings app and start tweaking every little aspect of your springboard easily and directly from your device.

Springtomize 2 allows you to tweak icons, folders, animations, app switcher, dock, and much more. If you’ve purchased it already, what are your thoughts? Anything else you’d like to see the ability to customize in a future update?

Popular tethering app MyWi recently received an update that adds compatibility for iOS 5. f you don’t currently own MyWi you can install a trial via Cydia. You’ll have 3 days to test it out in demo mode. After that you can purchase MyWi for a one time purchase of $19.99 when the trial expires.

It’s worth noting that carriers typically frown upon the use of unauthorized tethering apps. Some have even taken matters into their own hands. So if you’re an extremely heavy data user, you’d probably be better off just adding a tethering plan through your carrier.

We just saw BiteSMS receive a beta update adding iOS 5 compatibility as well. As we see the official iOS 5 launch get closer we will start to see even more jailbreak apps receive updates.

Intelliborn

BiteSMS, one of my favorite jailbreak apps, just got updated for iOS 5. It is a beta version and the developer is asking that you don’t submit bug reports just yet as they already know about a lot of them.

Due to the overwhelming number of emails from users wanting to be private beta testers, we have decided to release this iOS 5 compliant version via a public beta repos.

This is a very early beta release, so at this stage please don’t email us bug reports as we most likely know about them. This is not a normal beta, it’s more that users running iOS 5 would no doubt prefer something as opposed to nothing!!!

Saying that, it’s a pretty stable release and we hope you like the new look Quick Compose and Quick Reply plus the deep integration with the Apple Notification Centre. Also iMessage works seamlessly inside biteSMS.

If you’d like to try out the beta version of BiteSMS for iOS 5, simply add the following Cydia repository:

QuickMath is a new tweak that allows you to do simple math functions within iOS search. If you’re a Mac user you’re probably already use to this kind of functionality within Spotlight. I’ve definitely caught myself a time or two swiping to search on my iPhone to do a simple math problem and quickly realizing that I can’t.

Once you install QuickMath there is nothing to configure. Just swipe on over to search and type in your math problem. Hit search and the solution will show up in the search bar. It’s a bit quicker than searching or paging through for the Calculator app in my experience. Maybe this math tweak will be enough to make Leanna jump over to #TeamJailbreak?

IconCommands lets jailbroken iOS users customize what happens when they tap on icons. Want to set up gestures for additional taps? Don’t like holding down to delete apps and want a quicker solution? Once downloaded, with IconCommands you can head over to your settings and set up all that and more.

For example, you can set two taps to display application info and three taps to delete the app. There are also several other options including restart springboard, search Google, switch to Safe Mode, hide, and many more. I found this to be a super fast way to search the web, respring, delete, and hide icons. Much easier than jumping into SBSettings to hide icons. It’s also much easier than jumping into Safari to search the web. I simply tap any icon four times and it brings up a prompt to search the web.

Wondering how to easily and quickly adjust the transparency of your icons or turn off labels? If you Jailbreak, you may want to check out Alphacon. Other apps like Winterboard allow you to do this but if you want something much more simple, Alphacon is it.

Once installed it will appear in your settings. You can choose to turn transparency on and off and further customize what icons you want the settings to apply to (home screen, dock, folders, etc). So if you’d like for your dock icons to not be transparent you can just tick off the transparency option for the dock. Same deal with icon labels. You can choose to turn them all off or just some. I personally still like to see my folder labels so I leave those on but turn off icon labels for everything else.

Despise notification icons on your apps but not sure how to quickly get rid of them? Disabling them completely is one thing, but being able to selectively clear them when you’ve reached the point of overload is another. Luckily, there’s a Jailbreak app for that and we’re going to tell you about it, after the break!

BadgeClear is pretty much made for people who despise icon badges. Until iOS 5 drops (and a jailbreak for it), we don’t have the option to disable badges for every single app — Apple doesn’t allow you to clear badges for a lot of default apps like Mail — but if you’re jailbroken, BadgeClear makes it easy to clear any and all app icon badges with just a few taps.

Just hold down any icon until they start jiggling (just like you would to delete an app) and tap on the badge you’d like to clear. BadgeClear will ask you if you want to clear it and just tap yes.

This is nice for annoying apps that have badges for no reason really. I have a couple of those. My banking app always sends me push notifications about 10 days too late and leaves an annoying little badge. This is much easier than digging through the app and viewing the notifications. Maybe you’re used to the signal bars being on the right of the screen like they are in Blackberry OS, and are curious how to rearrange the status bar icons on your iPhone? Good news — there’s a Jailbreak for that! And we’ll show you how after the break!

ArrangeStatusBar is a simple little tweak that allows you to rearrange your status bar icons to whatever your liking may be. This may be great for users that currently migrated from another OS and are used to a different configuration.

Once installed, just hold down on a status bar icon and move it in whatever position you’d like. And if you ever want to restore to the default arrangement again just go into Settings followed by ArrangeStatusBar and tap Reset StatusBar and your status bar icons will fly back to the normal positioning.

One update I’d like to see made is an option to completely remove icons from the status bar. I really have no need to see the iPod or carrier banner. I’d rather replace it with something more useful.

Installer 4.0 is now available in Cydia and is compatible with iOS 4.3.x firmware and below. Installer was the first jailbreak app store, back before Apple even announced the official App Store, but disappeared when RipDev stopped developing it. Cydia quickly came along to fill the gap, but now the Infini-Dev team has brought it back.

Yesterday we had success “porting” Installer to 4.3.3 and below. Installer works with a different system than Cydia, thats why you won’t be able to add a Cydia repo into installer. As we speak we are working on a new community source for installer only, which means you will be able to install things via installer.

We could use help, you may help us by submitting apps that where hosted by installer, or apps that have the installer structure. Or by making apps with a installer structure.

To get Installer on your iPhone just add http://fr0stdev.co.cc/repo to your repo list in Cydia. The apps available are few and far between right now, so using Installer isn’t going to be a great experience until more contributions are made and a new community source is up and running.

When we tested Installer we ran into a MobileSubstrate issue so we had to run it in Safe Mode, and the landing page also presented us with a 403 error. So it looks like they’ve got a few bugs to hammer out. Still, it’s nice to have options. Let us know if it’s working any better for you in the comments!

xBackup for iPhone is a new jailbreak tweak available in Cydia that allows you to easily create backups of all your jailbroken applications and tweaks. I have personally always dreaded restoring my iPhone and re-jailbreaking to a new firmware since the task has always been so daunting. This program sets out to make that task not so irritating anymore.

xBackup will simply save your backup as part of your iTunes backup. All you’ll need to do is open xBackup, tap Backup and it will create a backup of all your Cydia packages and settings. Then sync your iPhone with iTunes. After you’re done with that, upgrade or restore your iPhone like you normally would (or use PwnageTool or another custom upgrade method, however you prefer). After you are done jailbreaking again, instead of having to re-download and install all your jailbreak settings, simply download xBackup again from Cydia.

You’ll have to open xBackup and choose the restore tab this time. You should see your last backup. Just tap it and all your Cydia settings and apps will come back down. If you don’t see your backup, you’ll need to make sure that you chose to restore from your most recent iTunes backup.

You can also SSH into your iPhone and save your backup somewhere on your computer as well. I’d recommend this for safe keeping.

Instacast – @reneritchie

I’m always looking for a better way to get the podcasts I want onto my iPhone. I’ve given up on the iPod app and iTunes because I don’t want to have to sync. I used to just stream from iTunes over 3G but there’s no way to subscribe and searching to see if a new episode has been posted is a pain in the apps. I’ve tried Podcaster and now I’m trying Instacast. So far it’s fairly similar, slightly different strengths and weaknesses but overall I like it. I especially like one feature:

I can get a list of All Episodes, sorted by release date. That means I don’t have to go hunting to see what’s been updated and when and think about whether I’ve listened to it or not. I just see what’s new in the order of its newness, and since I know what I just listened to, it’s easy to find something around it to listen to next.

For commutes or long trips, that’s all I want.

Eye TV – @chrisoldroyd

Eye TV by Elgato, is an app that requires specific hardware for it to be of any use. I have just bought an Elgato Eye TV Netstream Sat which is a small satellite receiver that plugs into a dish and then your home network. It receives all the free to air satellite television channels and converts them into a stream.

The Eye TV app for iPhone and iPad is a universal binary; so works perfectly on both platforms. Once loaded you are presented with a list of available TV channels. It also tells you what is on now and what is on next. Clicking one of the channels starts the stream and within a couple of seconds you are enjoying your TV show.

What is so special about the app is the quality of the video stream. It is beautiful, crisp, smooth and perfect to enjoy TV on your iOS device. Having previously owned a SlingBox Solo; which I though delivered awful quality TV streams; this app delivers the TV experience as it should be, perfect!

You can use this app with many of Elgato’s other TV products, however if it is not a Netstream product, you will have to have your Mac on all the time you watch TV.

WorldMate Gold – @Alli_Flowers

I’ve been using WorldMate since my Palm os days. Although its primary purpose is as a travel aid, I use it all the time for many purposes.

Just the other day I was standing in the library at school when a student came in with a five dollar bill – in Chilean currency. He wanted to know how much it was worth, so I looked it up in WorldMate’s currency converter, and was quickly able to tell him it was worth a penny. (Yes, he was very disappointed.)

WorldMate gives you the weather at home, as well as the weather in your destination city (or whatever city you want to view for any reason). It even gives you a pretty weather graphic on its home screen.

Forward WorldMate your reservation confirmation from an airline or hotel, and the information is immediately entered into WorldMate on your iPhone. My favorite part is that WorldMate tells you what gate you will pull into, and from which gate you will depart. No searching for gate agents or screens.

Book a hotel or limo from within the app, check weather, convert currency, calculate a tip, find alternate flights, book a flight, check flight status, and so much more. If you travel a lot, or even once in a while, WorldMate is a valuable tool.

Atari – @GeorgiaTiPb

Some of you might be into Xbox but I’ve always been more Atari, and the way I’m playing this new iPad version of all the classic games really isn’t fair. Now I can drive around town with 100 games that I love and i’m like… well, you get the idea.

The app itself is free but you can buy different packs of games, grouped around hits like Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, etc. for $0.99 or just do what I did the instant I launched it — buy them all for $14.99.

QuickTumblr for iPad – @andrewwray

QuickTumblr is an iPad app that makes it easy post to Tumblr, the fast-growing blogging and social network community that has caught the internet by storm. QuickTumblr isn’t a full-blown Tumblr client like the official iPhone App, but has a number of integrated features that the official app is still lacking. With QuickTumblr you can write posts in HTML or Markdown code and even use snippets from TextExpander, making the writing process more efficient and uncluttered. You can even send your markdown code, HTML or other files straight to QuickTumblr from your favorite apps with iOS file sharing built in!

The app offers additional features to streamline your posts with formatting options for making your articles rich and content-heavy, pulling from the photo-picker built into iOS for pictures and video. In addition, the app can access scheduling features in Tumblr for future posts and includes a nice group publishing option for posting to multiple accounts. It’s a great value if you’re looking for a good iPad Tumblr app — give it a try!

Mail Enhancer (jailbreak tweak) – @iMuggle

E-mail pretty much rules my life. I send and receive tons of e-mails on a daily basis. I heavily depend upon it for not only TiPb, but to run my business and communicate with clients. While the iPhone has a beautiful e-mail application, it isn’t very customizable.

Mail Enhancer has made my life a lot simpler. It allows you to set custom e-mail tones for different accounts, adds push notifications, custom signatures for individual accounts, and much more. Heck, if you want it to, it will also read e-mail notifications to you. It’s an amazing little tweak and something I recommend any jailbreaker with multiple e-mail accounts to check out.

Tweetbot – @llofte

Tweetbot is by far the best Twitter client I have ever used. The animations and sounds that are associated with every tap really enhance the experience. Even though I wish for native push notifications and in-line photo previews, Tweetbot is my new favorite Twitter client and I can’t wait to see what Tapbots brings in future updates. Camera+ @elfminion

Camera+ app will let you take, edit, share, and save photos all in one simple to use application. Multiple Points of focus allows you to focus on an object to get the clarity you desire while at the same time adjusting the light in the picture to snap the perfect photo that you want. The stabilizer option gives you all the power you need to take pictures without having to worry about holding perfectly still to snap that perfect photo. The timer on this is nice. If you have your iPhone mounted on a tripod or some other device, the time gives you the option to set a countdown to get the ground or picture you desire perfect every time!

Another cool thing about this application is it not only takes awesome photos in almost any way you would like, but it also lets you edit and share photos right from the application! After you have snapped the perfect photo, you have the option to now share it on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, or Email right from the application.

All around this was a great app, it was definitely worth the purchase! I will be choosing this app for all of my Photo shooting I do from my iPhone.

Zite – @ryguylawson (Reader’s Choice)

I found this App this week after a story on our local news. It’s called Zite and it’s free on the App Store. It’s back end was developed by a local Vancouver software company. It’s a great iPad app, designed to be a personalized magazine. It’s somewhat like Instapaper, except that it uses a magazine format versus a newspaper format. You can customize your content and have as much or as little to read through as you want. It can also link to your Twitter account and learn the topics that are of interest to you so it can customize your content automatically.

I love using my iPad for news and magazines and for the last few days this app has been awesome! For some background, I am the manager of the 911 centre for the region, and time is very very precious for me. My iPad is by my side all day, and when I get a few spare minutes to catch up on what is happening in the world, or in cyberspace, I go to my news and information apps. Zite gives me a pleasurable UI and great content (that I have self-selected and that it has learned I would likely want to see.)

Wondering how to put faces besides all the names in your iPhone address books? Adding contact pictures to your address book on stock iPhones will only show the contact picture when you actually click the contact. For jailbreakers, there’s a nifty little jailbreak app called Cyntact that’ll add them inline. Cyntact was actually one of the first apps available for purchase in Cydia. It was also written by the creator of Cydia, Jay Freeman (Saurik).

To get Cyntact working on your phone, it’s as simple as installing the app from Cydia. The current price for Cyntact is $1.00 (USD).

1. Launch Cydia.
2. Tap Search on the bottom bar.
3. Search for Cyntact.

4. Purchase Cyntact for $1.00.
5. After your phone resprings, go into your address book and you should see inline contact pics now.

If for some reason you don’t see them, respring your phone again. This has happened to me once or twice and a respring fixed it. It only ever happens on a new install of Cyntact. It’s a dead simple little tweak but still remains one of my favorite jailbreak apps to this day. If you guys try it out, let us know what you think!

iQuickCall is a jailbreak tweak which allows you to use gestures to get to your favorite contacts. Do you live in a city where it is illegal to be on your mobile device while driving? iQuickCall makes it easy to get to that favorite contact with just a simple gesture!

iQuickCall allows you to have to have access to that favorite contacts with just the tap of the status bar or a swipe across the springboard. You can fully customize what gestures you would like to use.

To use iQuickCall, simply enter in the phone number and email of the person you would like to assign as your iQuickCall contact. Once you have done that, you simply choose the gesture you would like in order to activate iQuickCall. After you are are set up with the correct number, email address, and gesture, you are now ready to use it!

When you use the gesture you previously assigned you will get a pop up box with the option to call, text, or email. Another great feature about this tweak is it also gives you the option to quickly type a number or email address into the a pop up box and it will call or email that number or email address right from the springboard.

For only $0.99 I thought it was definitely worth the purchase! In future updates I think I would like to see the option to have more than one contact offered for a quick call. What do you think? Are you going to purchase this tweak? Let us know in the comments!

Annoyed by the having to use Cydia to delete Jailbreak apps and wondering how to delete them faster? There’s a nifty little tweak available that makes this process much easier. In fact, CyDelete lets you delete jailbroken apps just like you would delete an official App Store app. Follow us after the break for a rundown of how to use CyDelete.

To delete jailbroken apps via Cydia can be rather irritating. You have to launch Cydia, click on manage, scroll and find the package you’d like to delete, and then wait for Cydia to reload. CyDelete aims to simplify this process.

1. First, search for CyDelete in Cydia and install it (it’s free).

2. You don’t see an icon on your homescreen. But you can find a few settings for CyDelete inside your iPhone settings panel.

3. Hold down any icon until they start jiggling. You should now see that jailbroken applications also have a delete X option by them just like official apps do.

4. Simply tap the X to delete the app just like you would any other. That’s it!

As a side note, CyDelete does not let you delete Cydia and some mobilesubstrate apps for stability reasons. Other than that, it should work on just about any other jailbreak app. If you’re jailbroken, try it out and let us know how it worked for you!

Ally’s pick: LockInfo 3.0

LockInfo and BiteSMS are the single 2 reasons I can’t live without jailbreaking. Little tweaks and customizations I can do without, LockInfo I couldn’t be without.

I was able to take a first look at LockInfo 3.0 before it was released to the public (it’s currently in public beta). This is a huge update to an already great app. The update adds themes, favorites, calendar status bar alerts, and more. If you’re a jailbreaker, make sure you check it out. There is a 14 day free trial as well.

Brian’s pick: Chopper 2

Chopper 2 is a very fun game not only available on iOS but also on the Mac App Store as well now. There are 36 missions that take place on 12 different levels. Your job is to escot vehicles across levels, defend different items from enemies, and even pick up civilians with your helicopter. The game allows you to use your gyroscope as well for increased controls. It features leaderboards and achievements and is universal across all of your iOS devices which is the best part! But are you ready for my favorite part about this game? If you buy the Mac version you can sit back with your computer and use your iOS device as a remote to play the game with rather than the keyboard! I tried it out and it took a bit of getting used to but I love it now! This game actually got me away from Angry Birds believe it or not! It is insanely fun so give it a shot!

Chris V’s pick: Ultimate Hangman

Over the last few days, I have been playing Ultimate Hangman with the family. This is a fun, well designed hangman game with a single or multiplayer mode. In single player mode, you can choose from a list of word categories (animals, SAT words, verbs, etc) although sometimes the words don’t quite match the categories. In multiplayer mode you can choose words for each other to try to guess. My wife and I have been focusing on playing three letter word hangman, which is actually much more difficult that you might think!

This hangman game has multiple background themes, including “chalkboard”, “snowman”, and “flower power”. My favorite, however, is “doodle”, where the hangman comes to life as you are trying to guess the word. Nothing like seeing the little hangman throwing up his arms in disgust or putting his thumb and pointer finger on his forehead like an “L” when you guess the wrong letter! I do wish the multiplayer mode had options like keeping track of scores or selecting a specific number of games to play (it just goes on and on right now) but it still is a great way to pass the time. Best of all, the app is a universal binary, so you can play on either your iPhone or iPad!

Leanna’s pick: Starbucks Card Mobile

I go to Starbucks every morning that I teach and, until now, I would rummage through my bag for my Starbucks card while in line. Now, I browse email, Twitter, and Facebook, order my drink when it’s my turn, launch the Starbucks Card Mobile app for the barista to scan, instantly check my updated balance, and head out to class. Quick. Simple. Perfect.

Rene’s pick: XBMC for Apple TV, iPad [Jailbreak]

I ran my original Xbox for a long time, longer than Microsoft supported it, longer than it ought to have been run. XBMC was the reason. Originally Xbox Media Center, it showed that independent software could not only do more than Microsoft at the time (and much more than Apple who hadn’t even tried yet) but do it better and more elegantly. XBMC was a set top workhorse, and thanks to XMBC we now have Plex, Boxee, and a slew of independent and open source media center software that almost always supports way more than established companies and their Hollywood overlords will allow.

And now it runs on Apple TV and iPad.

It does require a Jailbreak, which is an admittedly tethered pain in the ass for Apple TV on iOS 4.2 right now, but the leap in functionality is transformative. At $99 it literally turns Apple TV into the best deal in set top and that’s saying something.

Hopefully the install process will become as easy as ATV Flash but either way, XBMC is what a lot of home media lovers have been waiting for.

Alli’s pick: Virtual Guitar Free

It has been said that all the great hits can be played using the same 3 chords. There was even a youtube video proving the point. So now you can play all the hits and then some!

I found this thread in the forums and gave it a try. I used to play a bit of guitar, so I was interested. You are limited in your choice of chords in this free version, but you can actually pick individual strings on the virtual guitar so that you can do some nice effects – works really well for songs like House of the Rising Sun.

So if you’ve ever wanted to play guitar without the headache of learning which fingers go where, or lugging around the guitar, or miss playing occasionally – you’ll love this.

Ally’s pick: 1Password

I have a LOT of passwords. I never use the same password for more than 2 sites. Things that are super sensitive, they have their own. It can get tedious keeping track of them. Enter 1Password.

1Password not only saves passwords and identities, but can auto-fill forms for you. I use the iPhone and iPad app in conjunction with 1Password for Mac, which also has auto-fill. When it comes to saving your password data, it can sync with Dropbox to create a backup file or you can manually save a copy to a computer. So if you ever need to restore, you’re critical password data is safe.

There are several price points for 1Password, so I won’t list them all but the iPhone only version currently runs $9.99 while the iPad and iPhone universal binary (1Password Pro) runs $14.99. I also own a Mac license (which is a great investment). The Mac single license (and PC) is $39.99. There’s also family packs available as well.

Andrew’s pick: Fast Food Calories

Fast Food Calories is a great nutrition guide for the iPhone that has over 9,000 menu items from a huge selection of restaurants. The app delivers nutrition facts for just about every item on the menu from places like Wendy’s fast food to the Olive Garden restaurant, and it even has my favorite – Denny’s!

If you’re trying to keep track of your intake or want to make sure you’re sticking to your new years resolution to lose a few extra pounds in 2011, this app will definitely help you along the way. It has a familiar interface with icons and pages similar to the iPhone springboard, and selecting your menu item is as easy as 3 or 4 taps. You can get the free version now, or upgrade to the pro version ($1.99) to get features like search and to remove the ads. Check it out!

Chris O’s pick: SoundTouch

This week I have chosen an app that my 18 month old daughter loves to use on the iPad. SoundTouch is a relatively simple application that has a grid of cartoon icons representing various animals, forms of transport musical instruments etc.When your little one clicks on one of them, a real picture appears and an actual real life sound plays. Each selection has a number of different pictures and sounds attached to it.

This app provides a great way for your little ones to identify everyday objects by the sounds they make as well as how they look. The app is a universal binary; so looks great on the iPad as well as the iPhone and iPod Touch. Trust me, your little ones will love this!

Chris V’s pick: The Simpsons Arcade

I just downloaded the classic Simpsons Arcade game, by EA. I remember playing this arcade game in..well, the arcade back in the 1990′s, and the version of the game in the iPhone is pretty faithful to the original. The game is a classic 1990′s “beat ‘em up” scrolling screen game (like that classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game), where you travel from level to level (and world to world) beating up opponents as the screen scrolls by. Along the way you can pick up various things like a health boost (a donut) or even use parts of the background (like a mailbox) as weapons. The best thing about this game is the use of the Simpson’s characters and locations. There is nothing like playing Homer and beating up Chief Wiggum or Krusty the Clown. And just like the arcade version, there are small minigames in-between some of the levels that are fun to play!

Unfortunately the game doesn’t include the option to play as other characters (as you could do in the arcade version) or to have multiple people play (the original version could have four players at a time). But even playing by yourself can be fun for a real Simpsons fan. The controls are smooth, the graphics are good (in the classic 90′s arcade sense), and the sound is direct from the Simpsons TV show. It’s a fun game for any Simpsons fan, even if it is lacking a little bit from the original arcade version.

Leanna’s pick: White Noise Lite

Sometimes the only thing that will put my 4 month old daughter to sleep is white noise. Those are the times I am extremely grateful for White Noise Lite and the 10 different noises it includes. My daughter isn’t particularly picky, but for adults who have trouble sleeping, you can mix and match these sounds to make a new sound customized just for you. If 10 sounds aren’t enough, check out the full version of White Noise which comes with 40 sounds – that’s thousands of different noise combinations you can create. White Noise Lite also has timers to turn off the noise, set off an alarm, or exit the application. If you or your infant benefit from white noise for sleep, check this one out!

Rene’s pick: LockInfo (Jailbreak)

Sometimes you don’t realize how much you’ll miss something until it’s gone. That’s me right now following the loss of my Jailbreak and hence my Jailbreak/Cydia apps like LockInfo. I updated to the iOS 4.3 beta and haven’t had any luck re-Jailbreaking with the unofficial pwnagetool so I’m stuck on stock and it’s made me realize how much I’d come to depend on glance-able data like the mail and message icons in the status bar or the list of events and email on the lock screen.

Yes, it is a little WinMo Today screen. Yes you could choose to set it to pull down like Android’s notification curtain. And yes Apple hired the guy who designed webOS’ superb notification system and we just might see something official at the iOS 5 sneak preview event in a couple months. But damnit I want my LockInfo back now. Today.

Multifl0w was recently updated in Cydia and brings a WebOS-like “Cards” (or Mobile Safari “Pages” if you’re Apple-centric) interface to iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad multitasking system.

Multifl0w has been available in Cydia for some time now, but previously only allowed for an exposé display of apps (up to 9 at a time) running in the background. The mod features smooth animations and is low on system resources, and also packs full Activator integration for gesture support. If you’ve ever used ProSwitcher in the past then you’ll be familiar with the way Multifl0w handles app switching.

I prefer Multifl0w over the stock iOS app-switcher dock and have been using it on both my iPhone and iPad for the past day or so with no crashes or hiccups. Apple has the App Store, jailbreakers have the Cydia Store in addition to the default App Store. And if you want to be technical, Cydia was THE first App Store. It was available with iOS 1.x and allowed jailbreakers to download apps before the App Store even existed. Those who jailbroke their first generation iPhones on 1.x have seen several jailbreak ideas and concepts become parts of iOS. We would mention the other Jailbreak App Store, Rock, but seeing as Cydia acquired Rock, there’s probably no point now.

Another term you may hear when it comes to Cydia is repos, or repositories. These are simply sources you add in the manage section. ModMyi and BigBoss are two of the largest. They are already added when you install Cydia. You are always welcome to add custom repos if you choose. I highly advise only adding repos from trusted sources. If you have a weird feeling about adding it, I’d probably pass.

Alli’s Pick: Bejeweled Blitz

The very first app I purchased the day I bought my iPhone, is still the one I use every day. Bejeweled has long been a favorite of mine. The Palm and Windows Mobile versions weren’t cheap, but in iTunes, it’s only 99 cents.

While most of you are probably familiar with the basic concept – match coloured jewels in rows to clear jewels and score points. Bejeweled has improved greatly even since I first purchased it for iPhone. It now includes the Blitz, which you play against your Facebook friends. Nothing better than a little friendly competition, and no better way to compete with your friends than in Bejewled Blitz.

Earn bonus coins either on Facebook or your iPhone, and use them to buy “boosts” to help give you that competitive edge. Bejeweled is simple, yet highly entertaining, and incredibly addictive. If you are one of the few people left who doesn’t already own Bejeweled Blitz, now is the time to hit the iTunes link and spend the 99 cents.

Ally’s Pick – Droplr for iPhone

Droplr for iPhone is a utility that allows you to quickly upload a video or image and create shortened links. You can then view stats and share content you have uploaded in numerous ways. Not only do they have an iPhone version, but a desktop version. I can simply drag an image or video to the icon on my Mac desktop and it’ll copy a link to the clipboard automatically. This is much easier opposed to using Twitpic or another service that makes you manually upload pictures.

Droplr for iPhone also shows you how many times one of your links has been viewed. You also have the option to email, tweet, or copy the link to your clipboard. I’ve been using this service for about 3 months now and I love it. It’s by far the easiest way I’ve found to sync content I’ve shared between devices and computers. Setup is easy and syncing is seamless. Give it a try!

Brian’s pick: PhoneCloser [Jailbreak]

If you are like me and get bothered by the little things the iPhone seems to do wrong then PhoneCloser is the perfect tweak for your jailbroken iPhones. If your phone is locked and you receive a phone call, once the call ends and you unlock your phone it automatically opens to the phone app. I found this to be incredibly annoying. Granted it’s not hard to hit the home button and get out of it but I feel like I shouldn’t have to do that. PhoneCloser simply will close the phone app at the conclusion of the call. When you unlock your phone you will be greeted by your springboard/home screen rather than the phone app. This tweak installs no icons and has settings you can configure through the settings app. Best of all is this is a free tweak currently available in the Cydia Store.

Chris O’s pick: Google Mobile

I have chosen this app for one main reason. The search function using pictures is absolutely brilliant. I was given lots of company branded calendars to give out to my customers this week; each month had a photograph of a beautiful building, some I knew most I didn’t recognize. I fired up the Google Mobile app and took a picture of each building and the app identified every one of them perfectly.

I was extremely impressed and that is the reason for this pick of the week. Oh and it does a lot more – like easy access to your usual Google apps and voice search.

Chris V’s pick: Jenga

My pick of the week is Jenga. Ever since I saw the iPhone 4 demo this past summer (when Steve showed off the gyroscope with a Jenga-like game) I have been waiting for the game to come out in the app store. In the app, you can play Jenga with multiple people taking turns. In my opinion, this is the best way to play, although there is also an “arcade mode” where you can match colored tiles for extra points. The app doesn’t take advantage of the gyroscope function like we saw with Steve’s demo, but I hope this might be an “super difficult mode” that might appear in future edition (imagine having to keep the iPhone vertical to prevent the tower from falling). I can easily see how this version could be a fun, party-game type of activity.

Farbod’s pick: Eternal Legacy HD

As more and more console quality games pop up on both the iPhone and the iPad, Gameloft adds a stunning JRPG to the mix with Eternal Legacy HD. Being a turn-based RPG junkie, I am thrilled that finally a quality, classic style, JRPG has been made for iOS even if its not by Square-Enix. With a mixture of fantasy and sci-fi, Eternal Legacy brings great story elements, side quests, and some dungeon crawling to the table. You can level grind, customize weapons and items, and interact with tons of characters and environments. Eternal Legacy even has a tremendous amount of voice acting and story based cut scenes. If you are an RPG fan I definitely think you should give this a try. It is a bit expensive at $9.99, but for me it was well worth it. There is also a separate iPhone App for $6.99.

Leanna’s pick: Ten One Design Pogo Sketch

The Ten One Design Pogo Sketch is the perfect pair to last week’s pick of Penultimate. If you desire to use your iPad to take handwritten notes or to create paintings and drawings, the Pogo Sketch is a must-have. The stylus works perfectly with the capacitive touch screens of both the iPhone and iPad.

We’re getting into the cold months these days, and the Pogo Sketch is also a great tool for using your iPhone with gloves on. Say goodbye to answering your iPhone with the tip of your nose and pick one of these up!

Rene’s pick: Word Lens

I’m a sucker for Star Trek apps, the ones that make me think the future I’ve dreamed about, that childhood sci-fi so informed, is closer and closer to being reality. That’s why I loved the original Google Mobile app where you could just speak search terms (always prefaced by a Scotty-like “Computer!”). That why I liked the early Augmented Reality apps like that layered information over live camera views. And that’s why I’m picking Word Lens this week. The idea is as simple as it is awesome. You just hold up your iPhone’s camera to a sign, menu, or any printed block text and it automagically translates and replaces the text for you. Yeah. Wow.

It’s limited to English/Spanish and Spanish/English at the moment, and while it’s local and not server-side it only does word-by-word translation so there’s no idiom and lots of hilarity, but again — the future. Or at least the bleeding edge of it and I admit, that’s the fun part.

SBSwitcher is a new mod in the Cydia Store that allows you to relocate all SBSettings toggles to the iOS 4 app switcher dock. Just scroll to the left to reveal all your toggles! The tweak is very useful, especially when you’re in system apps (like Cydia) that don’t allow you to use SBSettings from the status bar. Additional features include the ability to call up the app switcher from the lockscreen, letting you manipulate toggles or get into a running app without even unlocking your iPhone!

One small caveat is that you don’t have the ability to respring from the app switcher without going into SBSettings from the status bar. An easy way to side-step this is by setting Activator to respring by using one of the available options, making it easier to respring on command without the need of getting into SBSettings whatsoever.

SBSwitcher is available in the Cydia Store for $2.99. Unfortunately for now, the mod doesn’t work with the iPad. Check out the full feature list and screenshots after the break, and let us know what you think in the comments!

As everyone waits patiently for an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak, I thought I’d let you know about some popular Cydia iPhone app updates including Bytafont, Barrel, Scrollingboard and more. Read on for the updates!

Bytafont 1.1

Bytafont got a much needed update and is now the app that most were hoping would be released. As with fontswap before it, this app can now individually skin different parts of your device (System, Lockscreen Clock, Notes, etc.) with the font of your choice. Simply download fonts from Cydia and skin away! This app is free on Cydia! Note: This app is NOT 4.2.1 compliant. If you are on this firmware hold off until an update is released!

Barrel 1.1

This springboard tweak gives your springboard pages a 3D cube transition and has now been updated with two new modes: Scroll down and scroll up. This app is available on Cydia for $2.99.

Scrollingboard 1.14

This extremely powerful springboard app allows for scrolling folders and dock apps similar to infinifolders and infinidock respectively. It has been updated to allow for custom dock icons which would allow you to place Sbsettings toggles directly in your dock! This app is available on Cydia for $1.49.

Ready, set, vote!

Jailbreak developer Aaron Ash released his latest tweak today in the Cydia app store named Barrel which makes your iPhone SpringBoard appear as if it is part of a 3D cube when you switch between pages. The premise of this tweak may be pretty simple but it looks stunning when installed. To make changes you can go into the Settings app and select between making your icons appear as if they are on the outside of the 3D cube or on the inside of the 3D cube.

The only caveat to this tweak is that it requires at least iOS 4.x and it will not work on the iPad at this time. If you are on an iPhone or iPod touch and are currently jailbroken, go check this out and pick it up for $2.99 now in the Cydia app store.

Ally’s Pick: Bytafont (jailbreak)

Bytafont is a jailbreak tweak that allows you to change springboard fonts on your phone. As of 4.x, fontswap has not worked. Bytafont is a welcome addition to the jailbreak app store.

You simply download fonts from Cydia you like that are compatible (most are), and they show up in Bytafont where you simply select the font you’d like to use.

Bytafont is available via Cydia for free.

Andrew’s Pick: iReconcile

iReconcile is a checkbook all-in-one app which includes features such as backup/restore, reports, search, budgeting, forecasting, exporting and more. The check register alone is reason enough to have this great little app.

Adding a transaction is a snap, and backing up and syncing to the cloud is automatically done after every added transaction (in-app purchase, 1.99/mo or 19.99/yr). Reports are represented in a pie chart and look stunning on the iPhone 4′s Retina Display. You can also categorize each transaction in order to look back on a report and see exactly where your money is going over any amount of time. You can also export your entire check register to an excel-friendly format (something I depend on for my own personal accounting).

Another added value is that iReconcile has a browser-based client that any user can log into from a Mac or PC. Here you can do things like edit a specific transaction and look at your spending history in very polished format. I started using iReconcile (originally Checkbook) since 2008, and haven’t looked back to a traditional checkbook since. Go ahead, give it a try!

Brian’s Pick: Fragger

Fragger is almost a puzzle-type game in which you will face levels in which you will need to think before acting. You play as a special soldier who has to take on terrorist-type enemies by your lonesome and all you have is some gernades with you. The terrorists could be in buildings or in ditches or anything crazy you can imagine. Your goal is to launch your gernades in a manner that will…well blow the enemy up! The fewer the gernades you use the more medals you will earn for that level. One would look at it like Angry Birds in a way just much more violent. There are nearly 130 levels to complete and they range from incredibly easy to pretty tough.

The graphics are cartoon style graphics but look absolutely stunning on the retina display. They also have included Game Center leader boards and achievements for your gaming pleasure. If you have not tried this game yet beware that it can become very addicting in seemingly no time at all and for only $0.99 in the App Store why not give it a shot?

Chris V’s Pick: Gifts HD

It’s that time of year again, and with an ever growing extended family (new nieces, nephews, etc) it becomes even more difficult to keep track of the gifts I am going to give everyone. That’s where Gifts HD comes in. This iPad app allows me to track by budget, purchases, and even post purchase “processing” (wrapping, mailed, even typing in a tracking number) to make sure the gifts get there on time. It’s an easy way to keep track of things that could easily get forgotten this Christmas season. At $3.99, it’s reasonably priced, especially if it means my mother in law will get her present on time this year!

Chris O’s Pick: Tesco Groceries

Tesco Groceries is an app that is designed to save you a boat load of time, and it delivers in spades! Sure you can use the service already via a web browser but this app just makes everything much easier and accessible. From booking a delivery time to finding the items that you need, it is an easy experience from start to finish. As with all grocery shopping, you always forget something; with this app you can go back in and add it to your list in seconds; even when you are on the go. You can scan a barcode of an item you are running low on, and it will be automatically added to your basket.

Gone are the days of dragging the children round the supermarket at the weekend, wasting your valuable time. Place your order and 24 hours later it is delivered to your door.

Farbod’s Pick: MultiMusicInfo (Jailbreak)

MultiMusicInfo is a tweak for jailbroken phones running iOS 4.x that shows song, album, and artist info on your music player section of the app switcher. It also replaces the iPod icon with the album art of whatever song is playing. The icon overlay can also be easily modified in order to play nice with custom themes. MultiMusicInfo is available on Cydia for $0.99.

George’s Pick: BBC iPlayer (web app)

BBC iPlayer is the official BBC site that let’s you watch your favourite BBC shows up to a week after they aired on TV.

With all the content you would find on the desktop website, packed into a gorgeous UI, the iPhone web app is a great way to view your favourite BBC content anywhere. There is also an option to ‘favourite’ shows, so you always have an update of the latest episodes.

A great feature is that because its a web app, if you get interrupted by a text message or phone call, you can load up Safari, and start again where you left off.

The web app is currently only available over WIFI or Vodafone/3′s 3G networks, and unfortunately is UK only.

Rene’s pick: Astronut

The Icon Factory makes pretty pixels and nice noises, whether it be Twitterrific, Ramp Champ, or their latest labor of love — Astronut. The premise is simple, you have a jump and boost button, the universe has gravity, aliens, and wrap-around. You try to grab the treats and get to the end. It tries to kill you dead before you can. And therein lies the fun. It’s quick enough to play while you’re waiting in line or stuck on the phone, addictive enough to cost you some sleep if you let it.

The basic game is free and you can get more levels via in-app purchase.

Alli’s Pick: TV Forecast

Easily one of my most used apps, TV Forecast has a place of honor on my home screen. A very simple app, you add your favorite shows, and it lets you know when they’re coming on.

In addition to telling you the day and time, TV Forecast gives you a synopsis of the episode and even information on past episodes. I especially like it since I never know when shows will come back from hiatus. With TV Forecast, I never miss anything!

Brian’s pick: Stardunk

Stardunk is an incredible basketball type game that allows you to play by yourself or online globally against other players using Game Center. The goal of the game is to score as many points by getting the ball through the hoop as many times as you can within the designated amount of time. You can also get multipliers for perfect shots and also gain add-ons like 3 balls at once by hitting the 4 blocks behind the rim. The graphics are stunning and the gameplay is virtually flawless. It is an intensley addictive game and for being a free app it is well worth the download.

Chris’s pick: Sky Mobile TV

Sky Mobile TV is easily my most used iOS application. It is a UK only app; it is linked to Sky Satellite TV services available in the UK. If you are a subscriber to Sky Sports channels, this app will enable you watch them over WiFi or 3G on your iOS device. The quality of the stream is simply stunning and even on a limited 1-MB ADSL connection it is flawless. The app is a universal binary so runs great on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

In my home, it is difficult to get near the TV Remote control due to my wife and two children hogging it all the time, now I can sit down in the evening, catch up on the latest sports news or watch a live Premiership football (soccer) game all from the comfort of my iPad.

A word of warning, Sky Mobile TV is not compatible with iOS 4.2. Sky is working on an update; but it may not be done in time.

Farbod’s pick: PdaNet (jailbreak)

Much like the popular MyWi, PdaNet allows for tethering your iPhone’s 3G signal to another device via either the creation of a wifi hotspot or through a USB connection.

PdaNet requires that your iPhone be jailbroken and it comes with a 14 day free trial. Afterward, there is a $15.99 option to continue using the app without secure sites being blocked.

I very much prefer PdaNet to MyWi as the transitions from on and off are much smoother and PdaNet has a much smaller footprint than MyWi. You can get it on Cydia, give it a try!

Georgia’s pick: Connectuss

This puzzle game is your old connect the dots game taken to a new level. Very simple and easy, plus lots of fun!

Leanna’s pick: Plants vs Zombies HD

Of all the different platforms I have played Plants vs Zombies, the iPad is by far my favorite. PopCap games got me addicted all over again (I even played while my students took an exam). Being able to touch the large screen in multiple places is what makes the experience that much greater.

If you’re unfamiliar with the game, the objective is to place plants with special powers that will fight off the zombies that are trying to get into your house. If the zombies get in, they’ll eat your brains! There’s nothing like a good ol’ zombie killing.

Rene’s pick: Simplenote

On the surface Simplenote is just what its name implies: a simple, universal iPhone/iPad note-taking app. Scratch that surface, however, and what do you find? More surface. Kidding. You find some very interesting sync possibilities, not just for you, but for family teams as well.

We waited a long time to get notes sync on iOS and frankly it never fails to disappoint. Simplenote lets you set up an account and it automagically mirrors the content of the app not just on your iOS devices but with the cross-platform desktop Notational Velocity as well. This is great if you want to quickly type something on your iPhone, update it on your iPad and later view and edit it on your Mac, Linux, or Windows box. But that’s just the beginning. Let’s say you put both your and your spouse’s iPhone on the same Simplenote account. You write down a shopping list and go shopping. She grabs the cereal, deletes it from the list. Boom. It’s gone from the list on your iPhone as well. You child at home finishes the milk. They run over to the iPad, add milk to the list. Double boom. It’s on both your and your spouse’s iPhone and the race to the dairy isle is on! Change spouse to business partner and you can easily use Simplenote to share ideas back and forth on whatever project you’re currently working on.

It’s not a task manager. It’s not a reminder. It doesn’t have deep organization or triggers or alarms or location popups. It’s simple as the name implies. And sometimes that’s just what you need.

Alli’s pick: BiteSMS (Jailbreak)

Deserving of a truly in-depth app review, I’m going with Cydia’s BiteSMS since I consistently list it as one of my three reasons for jailbreaking. BiteSMS replaces the messaging app, with tons of options (which is why it deserves more attention) including individual contact sms tones.

As you can see from the screenie, it gives you contact pics with the message list as well as on incoming message. Of course, the option I like best about BiteSMS is that it pops up on top of whatever you’re doing, so that you don’t have to exit a game or an email to respond to a text. And if you go back to your game or email (or whatever else you happen to be doing) and remember something you need to text, you can invoke BiteSMS without exiting the app.

You can trial BiteSMS for about 10 days. When the trial is up you’ll be bombarded with adverts, or you can shell out $8.99 and buy it from Cydia. Well worth the cost if you are a textaholic!

Ally’s pick: Display Recorder (Jailbreak)

Display Recorder is a wonderful jailbreak utility that allows you to record what is currently being displayed on your iPhone. It’s great for bloggers or techies who want to post up tutorials or reviews. It can also be used to show someone how to do something. Another neat feature is connecting it to a web server. There is actually a live mode that will show on a computer screen what you are doing on your phone in real time. This is excellent for demonstration purposes as well.

The only downside to the app is that it doesn’t currently have an option to record audio. I’ve been using the voice memos tool as a convenient way around this for now. It would be nice to see it in an update.

Andrew’s pick: NotifyMe 2

NotifyMe 2 is a great ToDo notification app that utilizes both cloud notifications as well as iOS 4 local notifications. You can input any type of notification you want, categorize (custom categories included) the notification and set a time & date. The customization level of each notification is very well thought out, and includes 9 different notification tones to choose from.

The great thing about this app is that it comes with a desktop web-based client as well (free), which allows you to set up or review any cloud notification on-the-fly if you’re at a Mac or PC. NotifyMeCloud will sync any notifications made on the desktop to your iPhone or iPad app.

Speaking of the iPad, NotifyMe2 Control Center for iPad extends the functionality of the iPhone app even more! Or, you can use it as a standalone ToDo app with local and cloud notifications included.

NotifyMe 2 for iPhone is available in the App Store for $5.99, with its iPad counterpart selling for $9.99. Although these prices may seem a little high, the payoff is well worth it given the polish and functionality of this great app. Go grab it now!

Brian’s pick: Boxcar

Boxcar is the perfect app if you want push notifications for apps such as FaceBook, Twitter and E-Mails. As soon as you get a notification in FaceBook you will be made aware of it via a push notification from Boxcar. If you are a Twitter user, anytime someone mentions you or sends you a DM you will get a push notification informing you of the new message waiting for you. If you are using e-mail that doesn’t have push you can use Boxcar to alert you right away of any new messages awaiting in your inbox. This is the perfect app to keep you informed instantly of whats happening in your online life. Best of all the app is free and they have pushed over 100,000,000 push notifications.

iFile is a file manager running under user root. It is available on Cydia ($4.99) for Jailbroken devices such as iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad.

It allows fast navigation through the iPhone file system. You can directly view and run files of various types, e.g. various movie files, sound, text, HTML, Microsoft Office files (doc, xml, etc.), PDFs, and various compressed formats. Files can be sent as email attachments. Text files and property lists can be edited. Folders and files can be bookmarked. ZIP packing and compressed file unpacking are also supported. In addition, files can be uploaded and downloaded from iFile’s built-in web server.

iTorch 4 turns your iPhone 4’s LED-flash into a standard flash light. When you launch the app, the light turns on and to turn it off there is a single on-screen button. Thats it! Its an extremely simple, yet incredibly useful app. There is an option to shake your iPhone 4 to activate/deactivate as well. The best part about this app is: its FREE! (Warning: constant use of the flash will drain your battery).

Ever since the Nintendo 64 I have loved Bomberman. Though I have to agree with most people that the controls are not extremely easy to use, it is still quite a fun game.

You are able to run around and bomb the ground in search of more power ups. If you have played and loved the Nintendo 64 version than this game is for you.

Leanna’s pick: Social for the iPad

Now that it has been confirmed that Facebook will not be making a Facebook app, you may be interested in a 3rd part option. One of my favorites is Social for the iPad. It has the same traditional Facebook look (without the ads) as well as the ability to chat and upload photos. The only thing I’ve found that Social doesn’t allow, is tagging friends in a status update. But if you desire to send private messages, create groups, events, and pages, or check-in at Starbucks, you can do it all with Social. If Facebook on Safari leaves you desiring more, check out Social.

Rene’s pick: 2010 MacBook Air

It’s got to be the new 11-inch Macbook Air. We received one here at TiPb HQ just this week and we’ll be putting it through it’s paces and seeing just how well it stacks up against our hometown champ, the 9.7-inch iPad. At $999 the MacBook Air is twice the price (baseline models) for half the battery life and it’s multitouch trackpad is just not the same as a full multitouch screen, but it has a full hardware keyboard and can run Mac OS X software.

Unlike the original Air it also has a high-density, higher resolution screen and 2 USB ports (and the 13-inch model even has an SD card reader). I used a second generation Air for most of 2009 and was extremely happy with it — except the battery life and lack of ports. It’s still the anti-netbook, with an okay CPU, good GPU, and amazing build quality, but that’s just exactly what some people want in their ultra-portable.

Standard configurations come with slower CPU and 2GB of RAM but you can build-to-order with speed bumps and 4GB. And since there’s no HD or SSD, only NAND Flash right on the board, it flies. The performance is much better than you’d expect and you often forget just how “small” a computer you’re using.

If you want a Mac instead of an iPad and you’re not going to be doing pro-level video or similar work, check out the 13-inch MacBook Air. If you don’t mind sacrificing size for portability, check out the 11-inch. They’re the sexist laptops in the world today and very likely a precursor of where Apple’s entire laptop line is headed.

Angry Birds has been a favorite of many for several months now. I know many others are like me and get super excited when they see updates for it in the app store. Imagine my excitement when I saw Angry Birds Halloween!

The concept is the same as the original with a Halloween twist. There’s new achievements to be gained and costumed pigs to defeat. You’ll also notice the addition of a few new birds in this game.

This game is a separate purchase through the app store and will run you $0.99 for around 45 levels of Angry Birds goodness.

Want to go to a haunted house this Halloween, but don’t know where to look in order to get the most horrifying experience? Well then, HauntFinder is the app for you! With this single-use app you can find all of the major — and frightful — attractions in your area! The app gives you all of the great haunted houses to visit within a 200 mile radius, and contains reviews and more information straight from HauntedHouse.com!

We’d highly recommend this neat little app for Halloween, especially if you aren’t sure which haunted house you and your group of friends want to hit up after gorging yourself on all the candy you got from Tick-Or-Treating (you can never be too old to still go every year, right?).

Just in time for Halloween, Doodle Jump has been updated and now has a Halloween level for you to enjoy! Turn Doodle into Doodlestein and navigate your way through zombies, vampires, witches, and other creepy creatures! The update is free for those of you who have had Doodle Jump and they also announced that while you enjoy the new Halloween level they are hard at work at an update for Doodle Jump that will bring Game Center features into their awesomely addictive game!

Leanna’s Pick: Sex Offenders Search Lite

We teach our children not to talk to or accept candy from strangers – except on Halloween. Children are encouraged to approach the homes of strangers and ask for candy on this one night of the year, but do you really want your child to knock on any door?

Sex Offenders Search Lite allows you to search for sex offenders by your location. It provides the address, name, and crime committed of the offenders. This could be a welcomed addition to your trick-or-treating outing. You can quickly search the neighborhood for sex offenders and make sure your children do not approach the house of someone who has committed a crime against a child. Of course this doesn’t offer full protection for your children, but it may ease your mind to know that these homes are being avoided.

Rene’s Pick: Netflix

Since Halloween is mostly a Canadian and US custom, forgive me for picking Netflix, an app currently available only in those two countries. And, well, Halloween and scary movies were just made for each other. Cream of the crop here is the Apple TV version of Netflix. The interface is so good you just know Apple banned Netflix from the building and built it themselves. The iPhone UI is okay, though the iPad version is basically the website and scarier than any horror movie monster. Let’s fix that Netflix, shall we?

But back to the movies. There’s tons of them for you to enjoy, from classics to fairly recents. You can stream them live to any of the aforementioned devices and — the killer feature — you can start on one, switch to another, and it remembers where you left off and just keeps on playing from there.

So when it’s late, the kids have stopped knocking on the door, the candy has been eaten, the jack o’lanterns have burned down, and everything is dark and quiet, tap on Netflix and queue up a good Halloween fright film. Then another.

FolderEnhancer for Jailbreak will allow your iPhone to have sub-folders, multi-icon moving, more then 12 apps per folder and these are just some of the features. Soon you will have the ability to have even more then 2000+ apps on your phone. Because more is always better right?

Notified for iPhone is a notification app available via Cydia.  It allows users to have more of an Android-style notification system.  I’d been on the hunt for a better notification system for quite a while.  This is one area I feel Apple has sorely neglected, and probably one of my biggest peeves.  Apps like LockInfo and Intelliscreen have stepped in to pick up some of the slack, but in my opinion, Notified does a cleaner job of presenting notifications.

When you first install Notified, you’ll see an icon to configure it. You can also create a gesture via Activator whether its a quick swipe up from the bottom of your screen or whatever you choose. This will allow you to access Notified from anywhere. Notified will simply drop down from the top of your screen and show all of your notifications.

Notified requires almost no user setup unless you want to route notifications to open a certain app when selected. There’s also a free plug-in for Notified that adds a status bar along the bottom of your phone when you receive a notification. The only downside to this plug-in is that is runs from the same API pop-up alerts do (from what I can tell). If you disable pop-up alerts, the plug-in won’t work. To me, this is somewhat counterproductive. I don’t need 2 notifications at the same time, for the same thing. I’d like to be able to disable the pop-up alerts in notification settings and just use the unobtrusive notification system that Notified has developed. Hopefully this will come in an update to the plug-in. (Update: Notified also has another newer plug-in that runs across the top bar that’s unobtrusive).

Compared to other jailbreak notification options, the UI looks much cleaner than that of Intelliscreen and LockInfo (and this is always, of course, a matter of personal preference). Priced at $2.99, it’s also cheaper than either of its competitors. It does not however show any information on the lockscreen. This didn’t bother me though. A quick swipe on your lock screen (with whatever gesture you chose in Activator), allows you to see your notifications on the lockscreen as well.

Pros

• Incredibly quick

• Doesn’t eat memory or run unnecessary processes that decrease battery life

• Nice interface

• Monitors battery life as well

Cons

• Plug-in doesn’t really serve a purpose since you can’t disable pop-up alerts (newer bar solves this problem but folks that like the look of the bottom notified bar better may have an issue

• Notification plug-in doesn’t have settings to make alerts disappear after a specific amount of time, they just sit there

FullForce for iPad is jailbreak app that will automatically format iPhone apps to the resolution of the iPad without the distortion of the 2x zoom.  Anyone who owns an iPad knows that all the apps you had for your iPhone will run on the iPad, and you can zoom them in, but they get pretty grainy.  It makes me sad to see grainy apps when the iPad screen is so beautiful. FullForce tries to solve that sadness.

Fullforce works through your settings panel.  You will see a new Extensions section.  FullForce lists all your apps and you can toggle them on or off. There are still compatibility issues with a lot of apps, but for free, you can get some of your iPhone apps formatted for iPad goodness. Some common ones I noticed that format well are Facebook, Beejive, and Reeder. Some I noticed that didn’t were games such as Plants vs Zombies and Doodle Jump.

The developers have a running list of compatible apps and issues going in a shared Google docs spreadsheet you can access and edit through Cydia with a Google login. I liked the fact that it formatted Beejive so nicely. I almost bought the $5.99 iPad version (I bought Beejive back with it was still a whopping $16 or so dollars). But this will work just fine for me.

No shock: Apple has rejected that nifty Wi-Fi sync application that was submitted for the App Store. Good news is, it’s now available via Cydia for any jailbroken iPhone for $9.99. Engadget contacted the developer by phone and here is his rejection explanation.

“While he agreed that the app doesn’t technically break the rules, he said that it does encroach upon the boundaries of what they can and cannot allow on their store. He also cited security concerns.”

QuickReply for SMS functions basically as an expanded plug-in to the built-in SMS app.  There is no icon for QuickReply and it just interacts with built-in functionality.  QuickReply attempts to solve a lot of the problems that the native SMS app still has.  The major one being when you get a text, you have two options, either close the text or view it to respond.  If you’re in the middle of doing something on your phone, it’ll close you out of it in order to take you to the text app.

QuickReply solves this problem by adding another button.  In addition to the traditional close and view buttons, you’ll see a reply button to the right.  When you click reply, it’ll simply bring up a keyboard and you can reply to the text without interrupting the app you are currently running.  When you’re done, tap send and you’re done!  The keyboard disappears and your text sends in the background. In settings, you have the option of changing the traditional keyboard to a transparent type keyboard if you’d like as well.  You’ll also see an option to replace the view button with a call button.

With the latest update to QuickReply, contact pictures were added. I thought this was a really neat addition. If you have a picture set for a person in your address book, it’ll pop up in the right hand top corner of the text on the homescreen. Speaking of the homescreen, QuickReply also allows you to reply directly from the homescreen. Enabling the lockscreen option in settings will allow you to double-tap a text off the homescreen and bring up a keyboard to respond without even having to unlock your phone.

QuickReply is definitely one of those apps I’d sorely miss on a stock iPhone. For anyone who’s jailbroken, it’s definitely worth the $2.99. And if you’d like to try it out, they have a trial period available.

snes4iPhone, the Super Nintendo emulator for Jailbreak, was captured running on an iPad — using a Wii remote to control your character.  Most people familiar to jailbreaking and running snes4iPhone already know how awesome it is to be able to carry your old favorites around on your iPhone.  Who doesn’t love Mario and old school Nintendo games? Better yet, who wouldn’t want it on their iPad?! Being able to do it on your iPad is even more awesome!  Of course, this is only for jailbroken users.

Dashboard for iPad is a Jailbreak app that will appeal to anyone who likes having widgets — like that little tiger puzzle — on their desktop computer.

Since Apple won’t allow widget apps on the official App Store, it’s Jailbreak only. You can get it free through Cydia and is a decent tweak for being in it’s beginning stages.  As of now, you’re stuck with whatever default widgets are at the bottom. Actually, a user in our comments section brought to my attention you CAN install new widgets through SSH.  If you plan to SSH, as always, approach with caution.  Not recommended for beginning jailbreakers! I’d assume we will see some start popping up in Cydia and Rock soon.  Video after the jump!

It’s no secret many iPhone users switched over from PalmOS Treo devices (yours truly included!) and now StyleTap has brought a way for you to run all your old PalmOS apps on your Jailbroken iPhone. Says Engadget:

you’ll be able to run Palm OS applications (compatible up to version 5.2), with support for native ARM apps, Audio recording and playback, virtual memory cards, and TCP/IP connectivity, amongst other features.

It was announced back in June of 2008, but better late than never, right? The cost is a not-so-insignificant $49.99 and will only work for as long as you keep your iPhone jailbroken (which means no iPhone 4.0 for you for a while at least!) but if there’s just something you gotta blast from your PalmOS past, check it out.

iMuggle Productions has released their first theme for Jailbroken iPhones — iTopple. It is available in Rock and Cydia for $1.99, and boasts of being “sleek, clean, and simple”. Included with iTopple are:

• beautiful gradient wallpapers
• 350+ icons (and growing)
• complete SMS chatkit
• iPod controls
• battery meters (charging and status bar)
• status bar
• custom wifi bars

iMuggle Productions recommends that for the best look, use iTopple with Reflective Dock (free) and icon labels turned off. If you pick this one up, let us know what you think!

We saw the preview, but now it’s for real — GV Mobile + (2.0) for Jailbreak is available via Cydia via the ModMyI repo. Originally an App Store app before the Great Google Voice Rejection of ’09, GV Mobile has thrived on Cydia, and the latest release shows no sign of slowing down. What’s new?

First, it costs money. The developer has worked long and hard on GV Mobile + and since he can’t rely on the App Store for income, he has to get the Jailbreak community to support him. If you like GV Mobile +, please do.

Second, it has a ton of updates:

• Favorites
• New tab system for Contacts, Favorites, Keypad
• Landscape SMS
• Call & Add Contact from SMS main view
• International support for SMS (until Google blocks it)
• Call, Text, & Add Contact from History
• Voicemail transcriptions, new voicemail screen layout

• Local archiving of voicemail (doesn’t download every time)
• Offline dialing (via dialing GV #)

SmartScreen provides widgets for your iPhone lock screen — provided you’re jailbroken, that it. The demo above shows calendar, stocks, and weather, but the developer will be making an SDK available so other apps can get in on the widgety goodness. Conceivably Twitter updates, IMs, to-dos — any information snippet really — could be added.

On behalf of non-Jailbreakers, Gizmodo asks Apple to bake this type of functionality into the official firmware, and let’s face it — they need something for iPhone 4.0 next year. Does it complicate Apple’s current, zen-like lock screen? Sure, but that lock screen is currently so informationally sparse, maybe it could use some complication?

Efiko Software, the developer behind which we remember fondly for providing much needed UI relief to our old Palm OS devices, has produced a very interesting looking quick tweeting application for Jailbroken iPhones called qTweeter.

It works almost magically: just wipe your finger down from the very top status bar in an application and a quick Twitter window slides down and the keyboard slides up to overlay your screen. If you’re in iPod and want to tweet the music you’re listening to, if you’re in Safari and want to tweet a link you’re reading, a quick button press auto-fills the details in your tweet for you.

It can alternatively — or simultaneously — update your Facebook status as well.

This means no exiting one app, launching another, waiting for load, waiting to launch entry dialogs, etc. when you want to tweet something. Just drag and go.

These kinds of apps show that, even post iPhone 3.0, until Apple surfaces more API’s and figures out how to allow better cross- and multi-app functionality while retaining security, there’ll still be a vibrant community of Jailbreak developers — and some amazing software to go along with it.

Available for trial on Cydia, and can be unlocked fully via donation.

Tired of hitting the 123 key to toggle on the numeric keyboard? Well, obviously some ingenious iPhone hacker was and whipped up this interesting little Jailbreak app to change the standard 4-row virtual keyboard into a five row with numbers surfaced right on top (or symbols, if you tap the shift key).
