This year, file your beta bugs early

When it comes to reporting bugs on Apple's betas, get them in before it's too late.

Filing radars—the popular term for submitting problems to Apple's bug reporting system—is a lot of work. What's more, it almost never results in any official recognition or appreciation, and sometimes it feels like an exercise in frustration and futility. Yet filing radars remains invaluable to the engineers inside Apple, and the sooner you file, the better it is for everyone, especially your shared customers.

Accidental Apple Pay triggers: When iPhone and NFC don't get along

I love Apple Pay, but I wish it wouldn't automatically trigger for every NFC chip everywhere.

On Wednesday, I spent a lovely afternoon with my aunt, uncle, and gentleman friend at Fenway Park in Boston to see the Red Sox. (Unfortunately, they ended a two-game winning streak by losing quite definitively 10-5 to the Nationals, but it made my Montreal-born aunt pretty happy.)

But we came close to not making it through the gates, thanks to an iPhone quirk with NFC and Apple Pay.

The importance of bug reporting

There's a longstanding debate in the iOS and OS X developer community over the value of filing bugs through the Apple Bug Reporter system, commonly known as radar. Some believe it's invaluable, the only way to give Apple the feedback they need to ensure bugs get fixed. Others believe it's valueless, a black hole from which little satisfaction, if any, ever escapes. I'm not a developer but, based on the conversations I've had, both points of view are certainly valid. So, what good is filing radars and what should developer expectations really be?

Apple patches hole in developer center that exposed user information

Last night Apple took their developer center down to patch a hole that allowed someone with access to the internal Radar app to get the professional contact information for anyone registered with the iOS, Mac, or Safari developer programs.

A glimpse at Apple's new Bug Reporter [Update: It's back!]

Over the weekend, Apple’s Bug Reporter website saw a short-lived facelift. Developers were treated to a visually overhauled website on Saturday, but seems to have been reverted to its old, archaic predecessor sometime Sunday. If you missed it, you weren't alone. Here's what seems to have happened...
