U.S. House passes bill to lift block on cellphone unlocking

Since the end of January it's been technically illegal to unlock the SIM card slot of your phone in the United States. Luckily, a bill passed through the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday with a vote of 295 - 114 that would make it legal again.

White House weighs in on phone unlocking, supports making it legal

Following FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski’s statement that the commission would be looking into the ban on phone unlocking, the White House has released an official statement in support of cell phone unlocking. The statement was made in response to a popular petition on the White House’s We the People website after the petition had been signed by over 114,000 people.

EFF speaks on the illegality of unlocking in the US and what it means for end users

As of just a few days ago, unlocking your iPhone, or any other wireless device for that matter, is no longer legal. The EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) has stepped forward to clarify exactly what that means and who it ultimately will affect. As it turns out, it isn't necessarily the end user that would be violating the law.

AT&T to begin officially unlocking off-contract iPhones, and good on them!

AT&T has announced that they've put in place an official policy for unlocking off-contract iPhones. This comes after the office of Apple CEO Tim Cook intervened several times to get AT&T to unlock off-contract iPhones, and iMore among others wondered very loudly why this couldn't simply be their default practice.

AIM Push Problems - Hacktivated iPhones to Blame?

Crunchgear is reporting that Till Schadde of Equinux has been noticing some weirdness with his AIM app and push notifications. Namely, Schadde has been seeing his AIM messages go to random recipients. He discovered this by being notified that a message he had sent to his iPhone version of AIM was redirected to a random stranger. That stranger then contacted Schaddle to let him know and to supply him with a screen shot of his message.
