Want to quickly find pictures of yourself, your friends, and your family members within your Photos for Mac Library? Then check out the People album!

Face detection is nothing new when it comes to digital photography: Facebook, iPhoto, and countless other programs and websites have offered it in years past.

Photos for Mac carries on that proud tradition with an updated version of People in the app. Here's how to use it!

When you first launch People, it automatically detects and finds faces from your photographs for you to tag. You can choose to browse through the People whose faces have been detected and add specific people to your favorites.

How to add People

When you double-click on a suggested person, you're brought to a page that shows all the images with that specific person. You can either scroll through all the photos available with that person, or you can enter in their name in the upper left corner of the screen.

Photos pulls from your Contacts to auto-fill names, though you can also create People profiles that have no contact card associated. When you've found the person in question or typed in the name you want, click on that selection.

Photos will then add the person's name to their People profile, and you can freely scroll through all of the matched photos.

People's recognition is on par for standard facial expressions, but you may have to go through this process several times if you have photos of the person making strange faces, wearing glasses, and the like.

How to view People

Once you're finished identifying people, you'll have a series of People profiles. Double-click a face to see all the images that Photos has found of that person.

Each individual Faces profile can be viewed as full photos or closer-up face shots. You can exit an individual Faces profile by pressing the back button at any time.

How to remove People

Should you want to remove a person from a photo, just navigate to the photo: a tag should appear underneath the person's face, and if you hover overtop of it with your cursor, a ring will appear. To remove the person from the picture, click the X that appears on the tag.

If you want to remove a whole person's People profile, select one of the People icons and press delete.

How to change People's key photos

After going into the person's People profile (try saying that 5 times fast), scroll until you find the perfect key photo. Then simply control-click (or right-click) on it, then select Make Key Photo.
