the statement of “2 billion downloads” is advertising 101, meant to get people to want to be part of the experience. Apple saying “well 2 billion divided by this and multiplied by that and the percentage of this and that and the other” doesnt really have the same ring to it…..does it? “2 billion downloads” quick and to the point….

But yeah, my roommate told me the same thing. I’ll have to take a look. But I just dislike when ANY company does that. If Windows starting throwing their market share of Windows OS to brag but hides it’s Zune/Search/etc numbers to keep from proving that numbers prove nothing I’d be just as mad (in fact I am, lol)

It’s just that…trying to claim numbers as a proof of superiority on one, but not for the other kills me.

The proof is in the pudding. While some may consider OS X to be better, going by numbers…it would prove wrong.

On the reverse side Zune users will say Zune is the better player, but iPod numbers would prove otherwise if going by it. It’s just silly to use numbers as a measuring stick.

to people that are knocking this iPhone App thing…I say jump on board and develope for iPhone… The pie is big enough for all of us!!!

Well, even free apps require you to click the “Buy Now” button, so… But seriously, definitely free apps get downloaded much more often just because someone wants to try it out, see how it looks or even check if it’s really as dumb as the description suggests (the countless fart apps and so on), but on average I think that people still download an app (whether it’s free or not) because they think they might have some use out of it.

I don’t think comparing Mac sales (a rather premium product) to App Store sales (or downloads) is a valid comparison…

Btw, you should be able to obtain a list of most downloaded apps on the App Store. At least they had something like that up when they were celebrating the billion-th download (i think that’s what it was) some time ago.

Hmm, clearly you didn’t comprehend. The point of stating such things is that they are quick to throw numbers around to show their “superiority” to the competitors. Yet they keep the low numbers of their other products out of the big things (I mean events and things like this if you’re not following) and state that their products are better (Yet still kind of include numbers by stating that the number of viruses are higher on Windows so that’s why OS X is better). So I’m pointing out their contradictions with a sarcastic contradiction of my own.

I didn’t think it was that hard to follow…but then again. Eh.

Every company releases numbers, it’s a part of business. What I’m getting at is how are you going to use numbers to justify your greatness for one thing. But when it comes to another, you say numbers aren’t important.

And I STILL would like to see the most downloaded apps. The most downloaded category. Like I said…if it’s going to be done. Do it right…

Apple said, and the it’s only rock and roll event that the number of apps downloaded were one time only, as in first time downloaded, not redownloads or updates. Once you download am app, your accout knows that if you rexownload it, therefore it doesn’t charge you or anything. This is a pretty big number, and apple releases all oftheir product numbers each quarter.

As I said, if they are going to do numbers, I want to see them do it right.

If you’re going to brag…show the percentage of apps downloaded. How many of these downloads weren’t redownloaded. I could download an app 30 times. But is that really counted as a proper download. I see that as one time only, but how does Apple see that?

For your “cough Mac cough” comment, Apple was not shy from releasing numbers a year ago or so. They showed how the Mac “tripled” compared to the years 2000-2005.

And I agree with Chris, yea its not the only way to show success, but its defiantly showing the demand. Whether we agree on the quality of most the apps on there or not, apparently Apple is “delivering” what the consumers want, hence the 2 billion downloads. And that is a business success.

I’ve been thinking recently… what’s the next big thing for Apple? They must have something on the way.

While what you are saying makes a lot of sense, I think everyone will agree that when a lot of people buy something (in this case, download an app) it usually means that they like it and they like using it. At the end of the day, that’s what this business is about: satisfying customers’ needs and if Apple is able to do that it is definitely a measure of success.

But…what’s so amazing. So people downloaded a bunch of apps from a huge collection.

It constantly amazes me how both company and fans alike will throw out these numbers to try and make themselves look superior. But yet when it comes to other numbers -cough- Macs -cough- they tend to shy away from that.

I don’t care if your app has been downloaded enough times to fill the universe, it doesn’t prove it as a good app. Not…one…bit. Also, I’d like to know the conditions of these “downloads.” Is it just one time download. People downloading because they took it off. I mean…there’s so many unanswered things.

And I’d like to take a look at percentages of which app or category of app is downloaded. If you’re going to do numbers…do it right.
