VoIP over 3G apps for iPhone are now beginning to show up in the iTunes App Store. After AT&T said they would allow VoIP over 3G, all that remained was for Apple to follow through with an amended SDK, and that happened with iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad.

So far iCall Free VoIP [Free - iTunes link] and Fring [Free - iTunes link]

We’re not seeing the monster in the space, Skype over 3G yet, but we’re willing to bet that’s incoming.

We’re also happy to see that the iPad is indeed pushing things along for the iPhone as well, and we’re wondering if this means we’ll have VoIP over 3G to go along with those new AT&T iPad data plans they announced yesterday?

If you try out VoIP over 3G on your iPhone let us know how it works for you!

Fring needs no update. It always had 3G capability, it was just blocked server side until now.

  2. Arti says:

VoIP naturally goes with something like the iTouch, the iPad naturally begs for the killer app of iChat, except that it’s totally missing a front facing camera! A glaring omission and fatal flaw. To save $20 and “save” that feature so they can have something to introduce with the next iPad 2, they gimped this iPad. Instead of focusing on making this iPad as good as it can be, they got arrogant and too cocky, and think they can “save” a common feature to use as mileage on a future product.

No way I’ll get an iPad without the forward camera. Video chat is a feature EVERY CHEAP NETBOOK has, and I use it a lot on the road, it’s one of the two or three major things you get a Netbook for. It doesn’t even put any strain on the ATT network since they can easily make it WiFi only.

I wanted to buy one of these for my retired parents, and a lot of friends I know were thinking that too. Perfect gift for parents, it’s like a laptop that’s always on and ready to display pictures, internet, email and best of all, iChat with your relatives. But without the killer video app? There is just no good excuse for not having this, it’s incomprehensible. I will have to wait for iPad 2, this is just too glaring an omission and frankly insulting.

How does the billing side of VoIP over 3G work? If you use, say, Skype over 3G are you only using up your minutes but not getting billed through your carrier?

  4. icebike says:

    Igorsky:

Skype to skype is free (wifi only at this point). Skype to regular phone costs you skype credits (like 2 cents per minute).

I agree Skype needs to step up. What are they waiting for? Currently IM+ does skype better than Skype does Skype.

The iPad just CRYS OUT for Skype.

  5. icebike says:

Skype supposedly has been laying in wait with 3G and notifications ready until Apple announced this:

  6. Brian says:

I have downloaded iCall several times and it just will not work on my phone. It tries to connect to the server and it never will.I have good signal and full WiFi signal and yet it will not set up because it cant find the server.

  7. Aravindan says:

Just tried Fring to Skype over 3G. Call quality was clear as wifi. waiting for skype to update.

  8. Pascal says:

The Media5-fone already supports this (this is a pure SIP softclient for the iPhone). Check out for the update that will come out very soon!

  9. eprisencc says:

Is there any lag or delay for those using it? I know that when using Skype with 3G unrestrictor, I get a noticeable delay that makes it hard to conversate.

  10. pierluigi says:

I tried Fring with a SIP account over 3G and it works really well.

  11. Justin says:

I’ve tried iCall and it’s actually not bad for being free. The ad supported option that allows you to call the U.S. and Canada hasn’t shown me any ads thus far. As far as Skype goes, it’s my preference on what i use, but they better step it up cuz free iCall and calls over 3G will eventually take my Skype account down to a cancellation. C’mon Skype, you’re owned by Ebay for frick sake, why are you letting iCall which is probably run from a dorm room, to steal your thunder.

  12. Janey says:

Justin: ebay doesn’t own Skype anymore. They sold it off to a private investment group.

Arti: You know, not everyone wants a front facing camera! Get over yourself! It’s not “insulting” at all. Does Apple owe you anything? Absolutely not. If you’re so unhappy about the lack of a front facing camera, then don’t buy one. It’s just that simple. This is what happens when rumors get way out of control. They could never meet the lofty expectations of tech bloggers that are living out of touch with ‘normal people.’ I know plenty of people with Skype but they rarely use the video feature anyway.

  13. Justin says:

Janey: I stand corrected, either way it’s odd their silent on this. They have been in the game for awhile and are quite established. I hope we’ll hear something soon, i for one don’t think it’s cute or mysterious to wait to release their update. Then again maybe there is something we’re not hearing or seeing with this situation

  14. Smileyboy says:

I have a google voice account, gizmo5 and fring. I have it setup to make calls out. But it always alerts me that I missed a call?!? I would like to take the call before they go to voice mail any tips?

  15. m65 says:

  17. Stephen says:

I used fring 3G to call Holland (through my Skype) and it works great. I just hate fring’s user interface, I can’t wait to get rid of it.

  18. Area K says:

I just installed icall on my ipad 3g lastnight an it worked perfectly for calling. Now today it worked just for the morning and is no longer able to place calls. Did ATT pick up on that or what?

  19. Devid Alex says:

hi, yes Skype is big name but it doesn’t mean Skype is everything in the field of VoIP. Already google voice is doing great for voip international calls, as well iTunes also a biggest organization of digital media. Also there is hundreds of company doing business in voip cell phone dialer. Best wish to all
