For those of you holding your breath for Skype to work over AT&T’s 3G network, you will soon be able to relax as Skype has told TiPb it’s only a matter of time. From their blog:

You may have seen other apps offering calls over 3G, but we’re holding ours back for a little bit longer. Why? So that we can give you the very best audio quality we can. When our 3G-capable Skype for iPhone app is released, it’ll let you make calls in wideband audio, giving you greater clarity and fidelity – because that’s what you expect from Skype.

We’ve been waiting since way back in November, when AT&T decided to allow VoIP over their 3G network, and Apple’s iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad has now removed the last hurdle.

It’s no surprise we heard earlier that AT&T has been working with Apple to improve their network before the release of the highly anticipated Apple iPad. Perfect timing don’t you think?

More from Skype via video, after the break!

  1. Dionte says:

I’d be more excited about them adding video chat.

  2. fastlane says:

So, twelve people will be very happy soon.

  3. HungWell says:

iPad, Slingbox, Skype. I’m glad AT&T has such a wonderful self image that they think they can handle all of this strain on their already strained bandwidth. I’d suggest that someone give them a full length mirror so they can take a peek and see that their pen1$ isn’t really that big!

  4. Milk says:

Can you people STFU about this ATT has a bad network stigma??

you know what? everyone STILL thinks FORD makes bad cars, but my current 2009 GT Mustang is the best and most solid car i’ve ever owned in my life

ATT is working hard to improve things, let them improve and don’t be a block headed Sheep customer and believe what everyone else says, try it out for yourself.

I’ve never had a problem with ATT’s network when i had all 3 iPhones.

and i hear they are improving things? even better.

  5. Art Vendaley says:

What Milk said! Stop being such downers,,,, any updates and FREE extras are always welcome in my book.. so STFU yall and just be gratefull youre not a verizon customer :P

  6. HungWell says:

@Milk and Art Vendaley: I guess the US Government is just a bunch of Verizon fan boys too: http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2010/02/04/government-fears-ipad-cripple-networks/

And I didn’t say anything bad about Ford. They make a decent product and were the only US car maker to not take bailout money. Kudos to them.

But facts are facts. While plenty of people are happy with AT&T, there are still many (myself included) living in problem areas. It would be nice if they reinvested money there first before expanding the demand on their network.

  7. Art Vendaley says:

    FORD RULES !!!

US Goverment has more important things to worry about than bandwidth,,,

  8. HungWell says:

BTW- Glad to hear you like your Mustang. I’ve been saving for a second car and that’s on my short list.

  9. baaaaa says:

Yes! Don’t be a sheep! Milk never had problems, and he even heard of a press release where they said they were improving things! Therefore, things are great, and only getting better! THATS critical thinking for you! The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades!

  10. tarrant says:

The entire Skype development team must be daft. Why are they working on ANYTHING save push notifications? How can they not see how essential this is to their service? You wouldn’t buy a telephone that doesn’t ring/vibrate. Neither would you buy a microwave or oven that doesn’t alarm. What makes them think their software in it’s current form is even acceptable? Seeing as they are apparently clueless, talentless hacks, I’d suggest just using Fring or IM+

  11. Glenn_Va says:

Skype: “You may have seen other apps offering calls over 3G, but we’re holding ours back for a little bit longer.” Lets see..I bet it comes out when info on OS 4.0 and new iPhone is released by Apple–maybe late Mar or even this summer. I’m more excited about the posibility of jail breaking my iphone so I can get some neat features on my phone. The Skype thing just dragged on too long.

  12. Milk says:

    @Hungwell

You believe the US government? -_-

the reason why I used the ford analogy is because i still have friends i’m closed to who will just SNAP if any word of Ford is mention and block it out “Nope Ford sucks they make bad cars”

I see the same Stigma floating around with ATT and it’s network.

    which simply isn’t true.

Btw, i’m not a fanboy, i’m currently using a Nexus One right now on T-Mobile.

You want to talk about a bad network? there’s a good start.

  13. HungWell says:

@Milk- Nope. I don’t necessarily take the US Govt word at face value. But I do believe that you have do have your house in order before you put on an addition.

  14. Milk says:

    Good Analogy.

  15. Luc Richard says:

We could already do this or awhile with skype in fring, which is better anyway. Just sayin you don’t actually have to wait. This is pretty cool for me because I can actually call long distance without getting huge charges since I don’t have LD minutes.

  16. Websyndicate says:

Finally. More excited about the optimization they are working on

  17. iDutch says:

Skype, should’ve had a 3g enabled app sitting and waiting…

  18. macboy says:

Why do people cry about at&t if you dont like them dont use them. In my area there the best. They cant be that bad having over 90 million costumers. Are you trying to say there is 90 million unhappy people? please

  19. Jeff says:

@milk. Sorry to dissapoint you but AT&T is terrible, when my phone says I have 4 bars yet my call barely goes through and I have to repeat thongs over and over that is a problem. And I am not alone…..and your ford, Dont even get me started on those piles of crap. Hope you have an extended warranty.

  20. icebike says:

    @TARRANT

The entire Skype development team must be daft. Why are they working on ANYTHING save push notifications? How can they not see how essential this is to their service?

    Exactly.

If they don’t add notifications its a pointless waste of time. You would think he would at least have mentioned this in the blog.

Its utterly useless without notifications. Fring, IM+ do skype better than skype does skype.

I can only hope that after their big patent dust-up they can get back to business.

  21. macboy says:

@jeff It’s terrible? For you. In your area. Just because people have bad service where they live doesn’t mean everyone does. Do think verizon is awesome everywhere? lol guess again. If they were that great my gf wouldn’t have dropped calls twice a day and slow data with her bb.

  22. HungWell says:

@macboy- There are a lot of us who stay with AT&T only for the iPhone. Some people have awesome service with AT&T. But if even 2% of their customers have poor service, they should be clearing that up before taking on more of a bandwidth load.

  23. Kevin says:

I bet “real soon” means when 3.2 is released

on Push, nothing has said they’re NOT working on notifications all the same.

this change plus notifications will make cheap international calls a reality finally.

  24. Sadie says:

@Macboy: plenty of people endure mediocre AT&T service simply in order to own an iPhone. I’m one of them. If I had a choice of carriers for my iPhone, I guarantee you that AT&T would be near the bottom of the list.

  25. Ben says:

This is awesome. I use skype a lot to make international calls when in a wifi spot. I’ve been waiting to do this on the 3G network for a long time…

  26. Jeff says:

    @hung

Other people complain about the same thing buddy, AT&T is just garbage I have never had as many dropped calls or terrible service since leaving verizon and joining AT&T and I travel all over ca and it’s just not as good. The only good thing they have is the iPhone

  27. iplan2study says:

Please try out our experimental free app “iPlan2Study”. We are studying the effectiveness of iPhone/Pod study aids.

  28. macboy says:

@hungwell and sadie Horrible excuses. All carriers have equal alternatives to the iphone. What good is the iphone if you have terrible service where you live. And dropped calls and have 4 bars and your call barely goes through and you have to repeat things over and over again and are people that endure mediocre AT&T service. Or it’s just garbage and you have never had as many dropped calls or terrible service since leaving verizon!!! lol I never heard of a call “barely” going though either it does or doesn’t. No matter what carrier your with. All these negatives and you went with the carrier for the phone???? Sounds pretty stupid No!!!

  29. Me says:

I love At&t and my iPhone! I don’t have any problems at all. When I had verizon I dropped ALL THE TIME! I also am sick of all the complaining.

  30. L says:

Only works out if you have a reasonably data plan and if you are making long distance calls I suppose… otherwise you get charged for using data over 3G anyways.

  31. Eddie2016 says:

Any Good news for users here in uk? We are trapped with skype being limited to 3 mobile only and rest with contractual difficulties

  32. KTrimbach says:

Count me in with Milk. I get tired of all the AT&T bashing. Even if Verizon is better (I’m not saying they are) that leaves 3 or 4 other networks that AT&T beats hands down – and I can verify that with my own experience.

Although I’ve also experienced most of the complaints about AT&T – they are minor compared to other networks. My main complaint with AT&T is their refusal to accept iPhones as cell modems for my laptop (Yea, I know – It’s coming! RSN)
