TiPb on APR Marketplace Discussing Wholesale Application Community vs. iPhone App Store
American Public Radio’s Marketplace was gracious enough to have me on yesterday to discuss the new 24 telco Wholesale Application Community with Stacey Vanek Smith.
Can a coalition agree on standards and deploy them fast enough to keep up with Apple’s App Store juggernaut, or is this just a play to get trendy, hot apps on low end feature phones?

I’d say it’s a marketing grab.

Oh, and that one guy says their chances of being successful are probably as good as Apple? No. Highly doubt it.
Great concept, but the fragmentation of the software platforms on the hardware will cause issues. Some Android devices aren’t going to be updated to the latest and greatest pastry that Google comes up with. Most certainly a program written for a Blackberry 8100 probably won’t work on a 8330. Who knows.

@Vince – I heard it fine. @Rene – I heard that piece on the radio and didn’t realize it was you. The concept is good – I think if they can agree on the right store designer/developer/management, they can probably get 10,000 – 20,000 apps up where the store knows what phone is accessing the store and so what apps to make available to the customer – but starting from now it will take two years, by which time all the target hardware/software will have changed twice, and the whole App store model may have morphed into something else, and Apple won’t have had any of their problems . . . gonna take a lotta pain to make this work.
