Pinger sent us word that their Textfree [$5.99 - iTunes link] for iPhone and iPod touch, which lets US users send and reply to SMS, has hit 1 billion messages delivered in just 10 months.

Now, we don't usually run metrics announcements here at TiPb, but I don't usually come back from CES with $45 in SMS charges either (billed at $0.80 each since I was roaming). Would that they would internationalize it!

If you've used Textfree or another SMS-alternative, how did it work for you?

    Nothing beats Google SMS! :)

  2. ewheeler1976 says:

works with Google Voice email forwarding for SMS messages (thus can be used to replace the Iphone's native "Messages" app for GV users)

  3. Kevin Meyers says:

Yup, I've completely replaced the native SMS app with TextFree using Google Voice. My outgoing SMS comes to my friends as if it's from my Google Voice number. Do the math - saves me $20/month in an unlimited messaging plan, so over the course of two years, it pays for my 32GB 3GS. Of course it doesn't support MMS, but none of my friends use MMS anyway.

Textfree also just offered me the ability to remove the recurring yearly charges and accept ads (which aren't that bad) to have it free forever. I took the deal.

My daughter uses it on her itouch. We let her have that as she doesn't need a phone yet but wants to be able to text her friends. Also, I get a copy of all her texts through textfree on my email so i can monitor what is happening in her world if need be.

I use textfree and I really like it. I only text maybe 3 people regularly so once they figured out how to use it there hasn't been any problems. I treat it just like regular text messaging and it saves me a boatload of money. Basically all the money I used to spend on text overages on Verizon goes to paying for my data usage now, so it all works out pretty well in the end.

@Crunch Nothing beats google sms integrated with TextNow : )

  7. Abe Aalen says:

I use this app called Textnow. Not if there's any relation with Textfree.

Works well using my google voice number. Went from the $15 text plan down to $5 (keeping that since not everyone has my GV number as of yet).

Not sure why more people don't do this. SMS chargers are a racket.

I used to be a Textfree user with the worst of luck. Message would just seem to get lost. I have been looking for a reliable alternative for texting and came across an entirely different solution. It is a program called GVMax. The author is in a new beta as we speak and when completed will have a 1 minute setup which will then allow you to use Google SMS through any Instant Message Client! I have been running all my text through Beejive and it works without any problems. Even get notification through Prowl on the Iphone and redirect to another application. This solution works with any cell phone and IM app and really deserves a look. Check it out at http://www.gvmax.com and you wont be sorry.

  9. Rich says:

To append to the above message: The GVMax site listed is for the old version that required some complicated setup. It will show the potential of what you can do with the new program. The author will let me know when the new version is complete.

I have been using textfree for couple weeks and loved it! Just leave your signature like "Sent from (Your Name)'s iPhone app, do not call back, SMS only", they will understand with the new phone number right away.
