Flash CS5 Can Compile iPhone Apps, Launches April 12

Adobe CS5 Countdown

Adobe has announced that their CS5 suite, the latest version of their industry leading content creation tools like Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, will be launching April 12 (with availability likely to follow at a point that is later).

The big news for iPhone developers is that Flash CS5, as previously reported, will allow ahead-of-time-compiling that should allow for easy (or easier) porting of Flash apps to the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

So, if you prefer developing in Flash rather than Xcode and don’t mind the lack of interface builder tools, you can stay in Flash and spit out iPhone binaries. (Just please — please — make them awesome).

Though not specifically iPhone related, Adobe is providing some sneak previews of other CS5 apps, including one I still don’t — nay, can’t — believe is real: content aware fill for Photoshop (embedded below, but watch it on as big a screen as you can.)

Now if they were to add this to an iPad version of a PhotoShop.com app…

The content aware fill for Photoshop CS5 is incredible.

  4. T says:

This has nothing to do with the iPHone BUT THANKS for posting this is AWESOME!!!

  5. SheiknetChris says:

T: I couldn’t help but watch the whole thing. Photoshop FTW.

  6. Rob says:

Ok so I am pretty sure I will have this

  7. Lady Kaede says:

I’m too old and slow . . . CS3 will probably ne my last iteration . . . I remember when the Knoll brothers were just the geeks down the street. . . . and Jobs, the Woz and I were the old pros in the hood (‘cept it weren’t called ‘the hood’ back then). Sigh . . .

  8. fastlane says:

Yeah, I remember us old-timers being so marketable with Photoshop back in the day, that we could probably sit down at an interview, spit on the interviewer, and still get the job because of our advanced Photoshop skills. We didn’t even have to speak.

Back then, it took us ten steps, a half hour of our time, and a hell of a lot of patience just to turn type into beveled stone. Today, one just clicks a filter and it’s done.

Now, interviewers just tell applicants “Photoshop? So, what? Anyone can use Photoshop. My 5 year-old can use Photoshop. What else ya got?”

It’s amazing how far it’s evolved since no layers in version 2. This new fill feature is incredible.

  9. Lady Kaede says:

Yep, my 16 year old was using Photoshop when she was 5 . . . well, enuf o’ the geezers; whaddya kids who’s gonna use it think?

  10. johnsen says:

Q : “Will it be possible to use Flash with the Ipad or Iphone in the Future. Please if not, a honest answer, why?”

    Steve Jobs :

“We wanted a fully optimized Flash Player for the Iphone which should be run smoother than on any other Device, such Android, Windows Mobile, but Adobe was “too lazy” to create one. They really wanted Money from us for an optimized Flash Player for the Iphone. They really must be crazy, we are Apple, wo don’t pay for such thing.”

  11. Matt(sZ) says:

Jobs would never type anything longer than 4 words

  12. Matt says:

The auto fill feature is amazing! This is going to make cleaning images up soooo much easier. I can’t believe how accurate it is. I remember back in the “old days” when stuff like that would take hours to complete. Damn…

  13. Vickie says:

    Me too. Wow …amazing!

  14. Hang says:

    Awesome features …

  15. While it works well you do not get all of the features as native dev. It is amazingly easy to use though and will suffice tons of apps but you will not have every iPhone SDK feature in the Flash IDE. The apps perform really well also, despite initial claims. You wouldn’t know it but there are a good number of apps already in the App Store built on Flash (including Adobe Connect, which rocks).

I played with content fill after seeing that video and it really does work. I suck at it (developer, not a designer) but it is sick beyond measure!

Years we wait and wait and wait

  17. Relwal says:

Besides opening the iPhone to Flash developers the other thing about Flash Packager for the iPhone is that it will allow developers to target a broader audience than XCode does. You can code in ActionScript 3 and Flash and target multiple devices with the same development effort.

  18. Very true and great point Relwal.

  19. Orangensaft says:

I wouldn’t mind perhaps seeing an implementation of Silverlight on the iPhone. If it isn’t too buggy, of course.

  20. rock solid says:

    Please welcome adobe cs5.
