iBooks Author 2.3 adds support for ePub 3, opens up ebook creation to anyone

I hadn't been able to open up iBooks Author in the weeks since the June 30 rollout, due to this tiny little thing called Apple Music you probably haven't heard of.

Today, I did. And boy was I surprised to find that not only can iBooks Author create its special Made for iBooks projects, but it now has two ePub templates. Which, yes, create ePub 3 books.

Google Play Books catches up with the times and allows PDF files and ePUB books

Amid the extravaganza that is Google I/O, the folks from Mountain View quietly pushed out an update to one of their applications that finally catches up with the times. Google Play Books has never quite matched iBooks or Amazon's Kindle, but the latest update to their iOS app finally adds support for PDF files and ePUB books bought from other sources.

Pages 9.0.4 adds ePub export for iPad

It's not the iLife '11 full on HTML5 and ePub editing app we've been waiting for, but at least Apple has released an update for iWork's Pages word processor that adds ePub export for iPad.

Here's the official verbiage:

  • Fixes an issue with tables.
  • Includes compatibility with the standard ePub file format (for use with iBooks) when exporting.

Numbers (for spread sheets) and Keynote (what Steve Jobs' uses for his presentations) were also updated.

iTunes 9.1 to Bring, iPad and iBooks ePub Support, Genius Enhancements, Bitrate Conversion?

It's pretty much a guarantee that Apple will release a new version of iTunes to coincide with this Saturday's iPad launch, and now MacRumors has a source claiming it will be iTunes 9.1 and contain iPad support, integration of ePub for iBooks management, Genius Mix enhancements, and bitrate conversion.
