Google Play Books catches up with the times and allows PDF files and ePUB books

Amid the extravaganza that is Google I/O, the folks from Mountain View quietly pushed out an update to one of their applications that finally catches up with the times. Google Play Books has never quite matched iBooks or Amazon's Kindle, but the latest update to their iOS app finally adds support for PDF files and ePUB books bought from other sources.

Apple's Fair Play DRM for iBooks cracked

It appears as though Apple's FairPlay Digital Rights Management (DRM) for iBooks has been cracked, allowing iBooks to work on non-iOS ePub readers.

Pages 9.0.4 adds ePub export for iPad

It's not the iLife '11 full on HTML5 and ePub editing app we've been waiting for, but at least Apple has released an update for iWork's Pages word processor that adds ePub export for iPad.

Here's the official verbiage:

  • Fixes an issue with tables.
  • Includes compatibility with the standard ePub file format (for use with iBooks) when exporting.

Numbers (for spread sheets) and Keynote (what Steve Jobs' uses for his presentations) were also updated.

So anyone ready to get their ePub on?

iTunes 9.1 to Bring, iPad and iBooks ePub Support, Genius Enhancements, Bitrate Conversion?

It's pretty much a guarantee that Apple will release a new version of iTunes to coincide with this Saturday's iPad launch, and now MacRumors has a source claiming it will be iTunes 9.1 and contain iPad support, integration of ePub for iBooks management, Genius Mix enhancements, and bitrate conversion.

iPad iBookstore to Include Project Gutenberg Catalog?

AppAdvice has followed up their $9.99 bestseller sneak-peak with more screenshots they claim come from the pre-release iPad iBooks and iBookstore, this time indicating Apple is including that massive Project Gutenberg library of free eBook content right in the app.

Regarding iBooks as App Store App, Books Using FairPlay DRM

It's interesting that, since Steve Jobs announced during his iPad keynote that iBooks would be available for download from the App Store, recently there's been some coverage of this as news -- including that the iBooks books will be using Apple's FairPlay DRM.
