YouTube significantly updates mobile site for iPhone

Google's YouTube has deployed a significant update to their mobile site, m.youtube.com. As is typical with Google's web apps, it works well and looks even better. Here's their hit list:

It's really fast. The user interface incorporates larger, more touch-friendly elements, making it easier to access videos on the go. It incorporates the features and functionality you’ve come to expect from the .com site, like search query suggestions, the options to create playlists, the ability to designate “favorite,” “like” or “unlike” videos directly from your device. As we make improvements to Youtube.com, you’ll see them quickly follow on our mobile site, unlike native apps which are not updated as frequently.

Sure, iPhone has a built-in YouTube app but it gets its updates only a few times a year when iOS gets updated. Theoretically, m.youtube.com will get updates any time YouTube feels like it, hopefully as fast as the main YouTube site. And hey, who doesn't like options?

Video after the break.

Shlov1 says:

It still doesn't play certain videos (like ones that I have uploaded and one the native app says, "This video does not currently support iPhone" anyone know why this is), but I do like it. It may replace the native one for me, we'll see.

Uska#IM says:

I cant wait for the day we get YouTube hq...

HungWell says:

The video quality doesn't come close to the native app.

Dirk says:

Strange.. i still get the old site..
(Netherlands)

Erik says:

It looks really nice and seems smoother and a little quicker for me. Only thing is I cant seem to find how to view "New Videos" for my subscriptions. This is a feature I use daily. Anyone see it?

dloveprod says:

I just tried it, much better over 3g than the native app, you have to click hq to get the higher quality video to play, I use to be embarrassed to be out and show someone a video on YouTube with the native app, it is horrible over 3g

Greg Foster says:

WHY IS THERE NO SHARE ON FACEBOOK FOR iPhone with YouTube? Whenever I'm on my cell and I want to share a video on facebook, I have to just post the link via status update but it doesn't show the cool little preview like a link share does on facebook? Come on already!!

Erik says:

Agreed. That is what I'm seeing. Finally decent video quality over 3g. It is much better quality on 3g compared to the native app. That was a reason I had jailbroken in the past. I used 3gunrestrictor to allow youtube to get high quality video. Thanks youtube!

Gregz0r says:

It still loads the vanilla mobile site, here in the UK. :-(

Matt says:

YAY! This will replace the native YouTube app for me, as I can now click the HQ button and watch videos like I'm on wifi.

Art VanBurenBoy says:

VERY nice! MUCH faster on WIFI now.
I just wish they would use this and update the iPhone App since that app is still SLOW as phuck!

cardfan says:

I'm sure it wasn't updated strictly for iphone.

jasondeno says:

I'm with Shlov1, I uploaded a video this weekend that will not play on my phone. It was an H.264 1080p video coming right out of Premiere CS5. Nothing weird. I've uploaded other videos in the past that play fine..

Pedro Borges says:

Still load the old mobile site (Portugal)
Maybe is just a US update...Which is strange...

pcdsim says:

For some users that still get the mobile version, you need to select "Touchscreen" version at the bottom.

Chris M says:

2 things:

  1. It's not just for iPhone. It's for any WebKit based mobile browser.
  2. HQ won't be much of an option to me since i am a victim of the 2GB Data "pro" imposed by AT&T
-.- Unless i'm on wifi of course :D
Xenofire85 says:

Awesome... Finally HD video on 3G network

matt says:

still the old one m.youtube too... Greece

Greyscale says:

It did work until I changed the language from English (US) to English (UK). Then it reverts back to the old site for some reason.

CJ says:

The HQ videos scream quite well over 3G. This is simply awesome!

nate says:

It's cool, but still slow on my iPhone 3G thanks to AT&T... I couldn't stream a HQ video w/ 4-5 bars (I gave up after 7 minutes of loading a 2 minute clip) It'll probably be much faster on my home wifi.

Kdm4lyf says:

The HQ button was what I was waiting for, hooray.

Leo says:

It works very well on my iPhone 4...now I don't have to wait for 3G unrestrictor in order to watch HQ videos...great job google!...loads fast

Steve says:

tried with mini Opera on my iphone, it requires plugins...
but works with safari, it's better imo

Rudy says:

This is a great find, I think I may use this web app instead of the native app

Padmaster says:

Damn! Looks like a US only update, still stuck with the old site here in the UK - HTC Desire

Victor says:

Now if only they would give us the option to open YouTube links in the browser instead of using the godawful app. Seriously apple just update the damn app and allow me to watch hq videos over 3G.

LozBlanko says:

Seems better than the built in app to me. Top work!

Pedro Borges says:

The only way i get this webapp working is by changing language to English(US)... Portugal

Borat10 says:

Well spotted Greyscale
It works if you change your language to English US.

claude says:

Beautifull HQ in my iPhone, but...
I am not able to have HQ/3G in my iPad3G????
...and you?

CowboyFan814 says:

I live in Charleston SC and the new site don't work for me either...
