Candy Crush: Top 10 tips, tricks, and cheats!

Candy Crush is my not-so secret addiction. It has consumed my days and plagued my nights. I've been crushing so much candy over the last few months, in fact, I've managed to figure out quite a few tips, tricks, and flat out cheats that have helped me beat level after level. And it's time I shared them all with you, the iMore nation!

So here they are, my top 10 ways to beat the candy out of Candy Crush: (Update: )

1. Find the patterns!

There are things that will make a sprinkle donut hole or special candy effortlessly. Recognizing and repeating them allows you to wipe the board and earn your ticket to the next level faster. I'm always looking for these patterns. I memorize which patterns lead to which special candy and then set them up whenever possible and as needed.

2. Start at the bottom

Crushing candies on the bottom is better than crushing candies at the top, because candies drop down, creating the potential for a cascade effect that essentially gives you free moves.

3. Go for combos

The two best combinations are the wrapped candy and the striped candy, and the sprinkle donut hole and the striped candy. Together, they can wipe out over half the board for you. This can also help you get to places which are off the board or otherwise difficult to reach. This is the only way you will get by levels such as 181, which have unreachable squares. Also, a wrapped candy switched with another wrapped candy will ignite a 6 by 4 square which can clear a huge area.

4. Know your stripes!

Candy is striped in the same direction as the final candy moved to complete the previous formation. If you move a candy horizontally, it will make a horizontal stripe, which will then explode horizontally as well.

5. Assess your threats!

Assess your threats. Prioritize getting rid of evil candy by their threat levels. For example, I usually make it a rule to kill low number bombs first, then chocolate, then go after the blocks.

6. Clear jellies on the edge!

Clearing jellies on the edge. When getting rid of jellies, only worry about the edges, especially the corners and bottoms. These jellies have the least number of combinations which can eliminate them, so will be the hardest to get rid of. Take a moment each move to see if you can get rid of edge jellies and, if not, go after an easier one.

7. Have a plan!

Have a plan. Each time you start a new level, look at the hardest element on that level and think out how you can defeat it first before you use up lives. Also, pause between moves. You may have a sprinkle and not even realize it if you're watching the candies from a lesser move get crushed.

8. Understand chocolate!

Understand chocolate. If you've eaten a piece of chocolate one round, chocolate will not regenerate the following round. This is a great way to keep chocolate at bay. Try to destroy chocolate each round so that it won't regenerate the next. You can clear the entire board of chocolate using this method, though in later levels there is a chocolate maker which will bring them back in vicious fashion. Chocolate will avoid special candy if it can. Chocolate will also not eat a fruit or nut, though it will absorb bombs.

9. +5 Candy is your friend.

Make a candy crush chain with +5 on whatever levels you can. This will add 5 seconds to a time trial level. You can tell if it is a "time trial" level or a "clear the jelly" level based on the small icon in the lower left corner of the start up screen for each level.

10. Cheat time for extra lives!

If you don't use Facebook, there's still a cheat to get you extra lives. Turn the clock on your mobile device ahead 2 hours, and then keep playing to your hearts content. Go to Settings > General> Date & Time > Set Time Off > Set Date and Time > Add two hours forward and get 4 more lives in your game. You will eventually have to pay back the time, but schedule that for when you're sleeping anyway. Remember to change the time from PM to AM if you are going past midnight.

Update: rodrigonew in the comments adds this brilliant twist to the extra lives cheat:

For "cheat time for extra lives" one, there's a better way: go to settings>set date and time>set manually>add a day. Then you go to candy crush, verify that the 5 lives were added and BEFORE PLAYING you go back to settings and change it to be set automatically. This way you don't have to make up for the lost time, it somehow doesn't register the increase of a day if you don't loose any lives before changing it back.

  • Great tips... I know all of them from playing 273 levels. I wish I would have known about them when I started playing! BTW what you call the "Donut Hole" is officially called the "Color Bomb." In my head it's called the "Licorice Bomb." :)
  • Wow I didn't know that. I like disco ball or sprinkle ball is better but I guess color bomb it is. Yes they do look like a licorice ball!
  • In the cheating to get more lives, what did you mean that you'll eventually have to pay back the time? Will they take money from my credit card?
  • I think what she means is that all the time you "skipped" will all come back at one time. For example, I kept setting time ahead and then all of a sudden I had four million minutes until my next life. Setting the time right helped get rid of some of the time though and I ended up waiting for two hours to get one life.
  • You can actually set the clock in your iPhone for one day in advance. Then open candy crush to get the 5 lives. After, go back to the clock and set it to the original date. When you go back to candy crush, the 5 lives will still be there.
  • I know already,
    But I like u r sugg....
  • There is a way to avoid. But there is a catch you need to be connected to Facebook. First you must make sure you are connected with Facebook and also synchronise your proccess then you delete the candy crush app on your phone and then you set back to time to original and you download candy crush again then after you open candy crush press connect to Facebook then your progress is synced and it have 5 full lives and u don't have to wait for 10 hours or so anymore
  • Please note if you lose your progress during his progress it is not my fault
  • what do you mean. to say will we have to wait untill the game downloading dont you think its a long process to download game again and again why do you not set up your time for the next 24 hours and get back to the game you will see full of lives and then set your time to the origional you wont lose your lives
  • If you follow jdmlee step by step you will get your 5 full live and won't lose any time! There's no need to, as Darren Wang said, (" First you must make sure you are connected with Facebook and also synchronise your proccess then you delete the candy crush app on your phone and then you set back to time to original and you download candy crush again then after you open candy crush press connect to Facebook then your progress is synced and it have 5 full lives and u don't have to wait for 10 hours or so anymore")<----DON'T TAKE THAT ADVISE!!
  • Fuck that shit of yours
  • I've been playing candy crush for about 9 months now and I'm almost done with the game, I was doing that clock thing changing ahead the time two hours to get more lives. But now I'm up to March 27, 2014 and my clock automatically goes back to the right time. Even though I don't have it on automatic. I didn't know I had to set it to automatic everytime I set it ahead and get my lives. And my clock on Candy Crush 's time has a thousand numbers! Now I can't get no lives! Does anyone know how to fix this? PLEASE HELP ME!:-(
  • the only thing I can suggest is set the right time in your settings go to the game and try to play the level you are at when it says no more lives click on more lives now and purchase 5 more lives for 99 cents. this should reset the time if you are willing to spend 99 cents you have to have your account setup to do in app purchases or this will not work and remember your general settings have to be on the today's date and the time now very important. hope this helps.
  • open candy crush app, the time for next live will display thousands (depending on how many 'advanced hours' you took). close candy crush app, set date to next year. you could also set to the next day/hour of the thousand minutes but skip the hassle and just change the year. open the candy crush app, now the lives are back to 5 (full). close the app, set date to current date. open the candy crush app. now the lives are back to 5, no timer displaying thousands of minutes. next time you want to play, open the app, check lives (5), quit app, change date to LAST YEAR and 00 hrs, reopen app and play. once the lives are used up, change the hours. then when 23hrs are used up, change the date (add one day). you can play for hours with 3 calendar days.
  • You are literally too stupid to insult.
  • So if i change the time to get more lives what happens? anything bad? phone mess up? anything lol
  • Hi, I found a way to pass candy crush levels without playing them really easy. Is possible to earn some money if I tell the secret?I can prove it! Will be a big lose for Candy Crush!
  • Hi, I play with my 2 balls added with candy, taste very good!
  • Hello i am so addicted to candy crush but i have been stuck on level 165 for over a month i can not get pass that level any suggestions..I love this game..
  • In all actuality, the candy is called a nonpareil.
  • My 3 years old daughter called it a cookie one day, so that is what I call it, LOL.
  • Great tips, here's another one that I recently found out about. When you combine 2 Donut Holes they will crush all the candies on the board.
  • The candy with the check? combined with matching two same colors transforms it into the wrapped candy which is a TNT.
  • Hmm, I beg differ on the stripe wipe tip. I have swiped horizontally and had the candy clear a vertical strip, it's rather frustrating. Pretty much every other tip I've figured out, if I learn something new I'll be sure to post it. I'm only on level 63 right now and I thoroughly despise chocolate.
  • No, she's correct. The candy stripes are determined by the direction of swipe when it was created. So swiping vertically to make a combo of 4 will result in a vertical striped candy. From there, the stripes determine which direction will be cleared. A vertically striped candy will clear a vertical row, even if swiped horizontally to activate. Make sense?
  • The only time I don't know which way it will go is when it randomly cascades into a 4 in a row. That's when I am not sure which I will get a vert or horiz. Hi Michelle !
  • Hi Georgia! Thankfully, I knew these tips, or I'd be cursing you for making me run for the iPad. <3
  • In my experience, when it cascades into a 4-in-a-row, the stripes will be in the same orientation as the 4-in-a-row. If it cascades into a vertical 4-in-a-row, the stripes will be vertical. Likewise for the horizontal. What I have yet to determine is which of the 4 on the horizontal will become the striped candy. It doesn't matter for the vertical, since it's just going to drop down anyway.
  • If they are cascading down they will always be horizontal. If they slide they can be vertical. Also when you combine 2 horizontal candies one will go vertical wiping 2 rows out. Even if they are both vertical. My favorite 2 to combine are 2 donuts it wipes out the whole board. Also I have not made it to the check marked candies yet. As for licorice the black looking boxes are licorice. The chocolate covered sprinkled donuts. I really dont like the donut wrapped candy effect. I hoped it would be something cooler. I prefer the stripped and donut over them 2. Either way this game is so addicting. I also think their is some other cheat. There is a guy on my friends list he always scores 2 times as much as everyone and he is almost at the end of the Candy Crush map.
  • Hi Georgia, sorry for the awkward message but i was wondering of a way to do so. I have a message to you and guys on iMore, i really would love to join you guys, Is there any way to do so? I mean i would love to write for iMore, can i?
  • I used to be confused about this, too. But Georgia and Michelle are correct. You're thinking it about it the way I used to, the direction that you use the candy. But how you use it has nothing to do with how it will respond. If the stripes are going horizontally, then it will clear horizontally even if you use it vertically. The way you get the candy, determines its stripe direction. If a vertical swipe is how you completed the match-4, then the stripes will be vertical.
  • That makes sense, I'll have to watch for that then, level 63 sucks, 4 corner jelly surrounded by chocolate and only 20 moves
  • Haha wait till you get to the bombs. That are on corners that are in islands all by them selves. Then you will have some levels where the only way to get past them is to make stripped candies.
