@chanter: Since I don't make apps, I'm not sure, but since you have to know Objective-C (I think)...

@all:
Since apps are starting to incorporate ads, why don't they advertise other apps too: it could be on the splash screen, or part of alerts. That way if it falls out of the Top 50 (or 100), they still have a chance, and they might move back up.

Just saying... :)

How long would it take a beginner with no experience to actually write and publish a working application?

The quickest improvement to the App Store would be if Apple supported or hosted real web pages with information about applications.

Right now researching apps, bookmarking them to buy later, looking them up from work or from any computer without iTunes installed is nearly impossible because Apple wants you to do all your shopping in iTunes.

It's a ridiculous closed ecosystem, it's sluggish because iTunes is a pig of a program, it violates our web expectations, and it doesn't even enhance the iPhone user experience at all.

Guess what, iPhone developers? Making a living selling applications means more than just writing code. It means generating and keeping interest in your application. That means marketing. Google ads, web ads on certain sites (such as this one perhaps?), etc. And that actually costs money.

I've seen many developers who just assume that "Oh, Apple will take care of marketing my application." Well, no, they won't. They'll give it a certain amount of time in their "new apps" section and that's about it. You'd better have a business plan for how you're going to keep interest high in your application. That might mean spending money so you might want to factor this into how much you charge for your app.

Too bad you can't sort based on multiple top 50 lists - top 50 best selling, top 50 best rated, etc.

I also notice that when I look for apps I don't use Google like I do for desktop apps. I usually just use iTunes. This may also be a contributing factor to the visibility drop-off that apps experience.
