Sorry, Skype 1.3 [Free - iTunes link], we know you're trying, at least we think you are, but it's 2010 now and we have to agree with 9to5mac where's the push notification and VoIP over 3G?

Maybe Apple hasn't given you the tools or SDK agreement for VoIP yet, we don't know, but push notification are good to go, you know?

We appreciate the landscape mode of IM, the hints and tips, the general performance improvements, the call quality indicator, and the call drop after hold fix, really we do, but you're one of the premiere apps in your class -- we know you can knock this app out of the park.

Apple Retail Store to See 'Experts' in a Few Short Weeks
  1. Zak Saber says:

wooo 1st and even if we get 3G calling everytime a push notification or a text message bubble pops up it interrupts the call! and then the person on the other line cannot hear you...

  2. Rapidblue says:

Must agree - where is the VOIP over 3G?? Been waiting quite a few months for this now!!

  3. frog says:

    VOIP over 3G is useless!

  4. iPhone 4.0 says:

Hey why VOIP over 3G is useless?? Can you explain to us because I have doubt that you are mistaken.

  5. Geo Coldz says:

There was an update for skype today. I open it after it installed and I this pop up. Warning this version only works on unmodifed firmwares 3.0.x and 3.1.x. How would skype know I am jailbroken?

  6. iDutch says:

@Geo Coldz that's been around for ages now, don't know for sure, but i think most of the better developers know if the device using their software is jailbroken or not. So it's not uncommon.

@frog if your carrier is like mine meaning you have 3g mostly everywhere then it's pretty useful.

  7. Tavis says:

I use Skype every day, and I have the app. But I don't use it. Because it can't stay logged in after I close it and doesn't do push notifications. Its useless to me until it can :( .

  8. Skype oh come on now says:

ah poor Skype, they have so much to learn. why they don't listen to customers suggestions is beyond my understanding. i did the update and the call indicator DOT does not make a whole lot of sense, who the hell know what each of the many colors means? sure green is good and red is bad and yellow is questionable and there was yet another color i don't remember. when is voip going to be availalbe over 3G. that would be great to have. when do they plan on rolling that out? hurry up!

  9. SeattleBrad says:

    Also waiting for Bluetooth support.

  10. mech says:

I was royally pissed w/ Skype for removing the ability to stay logged in when phone calls come in. I used SkypeOut to call myself to check voicemail, which meant declining the phone call in regular phone mode. The updated skype version (prior to this most recent one) eliminated that ability. It just logged out when a phone call came in and stopped backgrounding. Luckily, there is Backgrounder, but it's a damn hassle to remember to background Skype just in case lest a phone call comes in and interrupts a skype session. I'm sure this was done at Apple's request, but at least they could've warned us about the deprecated service before we upgraded.

I'm pretty sure this will remain the case as Apple loves to sandbox all the apps, those bastards.

8 @Call quality indicator: You can click on the colored dot to get more detailed information.

  12. John Piercy says:

For those who are jailbroken ... Download 3G Unrestrictor for allowing Skype over 3G ,, been using for a while now .. available in Cydia

  13. The Great Alfonso says:

3G Unrestrictor is good but I prefer My3G, it works system-wide, for all the apps. Only thing, is it isn't free but it's well worth the money, imho.
