Along with today's big Microsoft Office for iPad announcement comes news of a special promotion offering a year's free Office 365 access to iPad owners. There are a couple of caveats, however, which include limited availability and the small detail that you need to go to a Microsoft retail store to claim it.

Microsoft Office for iPhone goes free for home use

On the back of today's Microsoft Office for iPad announcement, it's sibling app for the iPhone has gone free. When it launched you required an Office 365 subscription to use it, but as of today it's completely free for home use. Business users will still require an Office 365 subscription to create and manage documents.

iPad versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint now available in the App Store

As promised, the iPad versions of the Microsoft Office suiteWord, Excel, and PowerPoint — all are now available in the App Store. All three apps are free to download, but require a $120-a-year subscription to Office 365 to get the most out of them.

All three apps offer the same set of features as the desktop versions and sync through the cloud to your desktop via the aforementioned Office 365 subscription.
