HBO Go to bring Game of Thrones, Sopranos, movies, more to iPhone and iPad

After years of rumors it looks like HBO is finally ready to throw their hat -- and programing content like Game of Thrones and Sopranos -- into the iPad and iPhone ring with HBO Go. It looks like it will have all their original hit shows and some movies as well, and work over Wi-Fi and 3G.

HBO Go will come via "participating TV providers" -- whatever that means -- perhaps as early as May 2. You'll have to be an HBO subscriber to use it. No word yet on whether it will be available internationally -- but we can dream, right?

I wish HBO and other premium content providers would realize that they are the ones with the power in their relationship with the content deliverers (cable, satellite). I'd be happy to pay for an HBO subscription that I could watch online, but I'm not going to pay for the underlying cable subscription. I'm confident I'm not alone in this.

Why? Makes sense you pay for cable or dish to get this that's how they're paid. Also dint be so cheap homey. It's just life and it's just money. Can't keep the money when you're dead.

I'm with you, Ren. This is an epic fail, IMO. HBO could have my money right now if they make this it's own thing. Don't tie it down to service provider. HBO isn't worth the price of subscription anymore since I don't watch HBO for the movies. I cancelled my HBO subscription. Now I just wait for the DVDs of the shows I like to hit Netflix.

There is NO incentive for HBO to get rid of the Cable company. It's the cable company that pays them to air their channel. And the consumer isn't going to make up the difference.
All these "do away with cable" scenarios and postings don't ever account for the main issue which is how these companies make money. They exist to make money. They aren't going voluntarily make it harder by hastening the demise of cable companies. Which like it or not aren't going anywhere.

Ren is exactly right. I would love to pay HBO for their programming on my iPad... but through Comcast, not going to happen. According to them it's $60/month with the other "required" upgrades for those hundreds of other channels I'm never going to watch. How about some real innovation HBO?

Wait... This is already available and has been for a while now. All you have to do is go to www.hbogo.com and you can watch. You dont need an app to go to a webpage. You do have to be a current HBO subscriber on a cable or sat system. But ummm... yeah.

Reread the title, specifically the last four words...
HBO Go to bring Game of Thrones, Sopranos, movies, more TO IPHONE AND IPAD

I do subscribe to HBO and would love this app depending on what they are thinking about fee wise. It should be just an extension of my current service and an incentive to get more people to sign up for HBO. HBO already has a really good On Demand offering (at least on Time Warner) so I will have trouble justifying paying extra to watch on my iPad when there are plenty of TVs around the house. I don't have unlimited data, so 3G streaming is not a big deal to me.
