How to jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 via redsn0w 0.9.6rc16 (untethered)

Complete guide to Jailbreaking iPhone, iPod touch, and original iPad running iOS 4.3.3 with redsn0w

The iOS 4.3.3 untethered Jailbreak for iPhone, iPod touch, and original iPad has just gone live... and once again it's the same exploit and the same process as iOS 4.3.1 and iOS 4.3.2. That's right, three-peat! So here's your updated redsn0w Jailbreak walkthrough, just to get you going as fast as possible

Important: iPad 2 is still not supported. Likewise, if you've got a Verizon iPhone you'll want to wait for our updated Verizon iPhone iOS 4.3.3 guide.

Important: If you want to preserve your unlock, DO NOT USE THIS METHOD. To maintain your baseband, you'll need to create a custom IPSW and pwnagetool. Check out our TiPb jailbreak forum for more.

UPDATE: redsn0w has been updated to rc16 to fix an issue with the side ringer/vibration switch. The process remains the same, but we've updated the link to redsn0w below.

Hit the jump for a complete how-to!

What you need

  • iTunes 10.2.2 or higher
  • redsn0w for Windows or Mac OS X
  • iOS 4.3.3 (liPhone3,1_4.3.3_8J2_Restore.ipsw) located in: *Windows XP: Documents and Settings[User]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes[Device] Software Updates *Windows Vista/7: Users[User]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates *Mac OS X: [User]/Library/iTunes/[Device] Software Updates/
  1. If you don't care about Unlocking, update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 4.3.3 via iTunes. (If you're not sure, here's how to update.)
  2. Next, you will need to download redsn0w via the link above
  3. Next, you will need to go grab the appropriate iOS firmware for your device. (Located in the directory listed above)
  4. Once you have downloaded the correct firmware and redsn0w, you are now ready to jailbreak.
  5. After you launch redsn0w, you will be asked to browse and choose the custom firmware you downloaded in the previous step.
  6. redsn0w will process the firmware...
  7. ...and let you know when it's good to go
  8. Next you'll choose to install Cydia
  9. And then redsn0w will walk you through placing your device in DFU mode. Just make sure you start this process with your device OFF.
  10. Let your device do its thing and you're done!

For a complete walk-through, check out the video tutorial above. It's for iOS 4.3.1 but as we said at the beginning, this is the exact same process. If you aren't sure whether or not you want to take a jump to the dark side, check out our complete jailbreak basics guide first!

alexander maxham says:

Yessssssss I am going to do this as soon as i get home.

cardfan says:

I don't share your excitement about having to reinstall all my jb apps just for a meaningless iOS update.

alexander maxham says:

well i updated to 4.3.3 by mistake so im happy to be jailbroken again

Ethan S. says:

You should look into a jailbreak app that backs up and restores all of your jailbreak stuff then. I use PKGBackup, which has worked fantastically for me. Don't ever have to go back and manually install anything.

Joel says:

Then Where is the link for that software.. can you give us ?? so we can download

erik says:

just search cydia for pkgbackup. it's $8 but worth it

Trey says:

So we have to use 4.3.1 for a 4.4.3 jailbreak? In confused on this part if where you have to download custom firmware

Ethan S. says:

No. You have to be on 4.3.3, and use 4.3.3 with redsn0w.
You will have to cook your own custom firmware, if you wish to preserve your baseband. If you cook your own firmware, then you don't need to upgrade to 4.3.3 through iTunes, as you'll be updating to 4.3.3 with the cooked firmware.

Kriss says:

What basebands does this cover as I am on 04.10.01?

AAk says:

how can i know the basebands of my mobile...????

FrankRow says:

Don't kill me but I'm still IOS 4.0.1 for 3GS. It's been working great but now I'm ready to update and jailbreak. Can anyone help and let me know the best way to perform this jailbreak? Can i just do a reg update through iTunes and then do the redsn0w jailbreak? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Ethan S. says:

Follow this guide. No difference.

Luke Roberts says:

I'm new to jailbreaking and I'm considering to do it as my provider will not enable tethering.
Will this break push notifications or anything else on my 3GS? I remember reading about people having trouble with this in the past.

Ethan S. says:

It only breaks push notifications and YouTube if you hacktivate (activate your iPhone without the original carrier SIM card that the phone is locked to). If you use your iPhone and don't worry about it being unlocked, you're fine.
In addition, there is a package called "Push Doctor", which fixes this, for hactivated, as I've done for my friends.

Jimmy says:

As a recent JB'er of 4.3.2... MAKE SURE you sync your contacts with Outlook before you upgrade iOS, because a simple back-up WILL NOT save your contacts. I didn't do that (thinking the back-up would save, then restore my contacts), and thus lost ALL of my contacts. I rarely connect my phone to iTunes, so my most recent Outlook sync was way outdated, and I lost a lot of contact data. Just a "heads up" to jailbreak novices... plus of course do a back-up before you upgrade for other settings and apps and things that will restore from a back-up. Good luck!

slalomskie says:

Don't forget to copy your photos and videos to your hard drive as well.

Jimmy says:

Another important piece that is hardly ever mentioned in jailbreaking instructions (and caused me hours of delay to figure it out on my own)... when you download the firmware (which is a zip file) you need to save it as an .ipsw file extension. Otherwise, in step 4 above, it will not find the firmware you downloaded when you browse because it will still have a zip file extension. PLEASE let people know they have to save the firmware as a .ipsw file, and update your JB instructions. Novice jailbreaks don't know that important step.

Mississippi says:

if I jailbreak my iPhone4 do I avoid my warranty?!

slalomskie says:

YES, but if you need warranty service just restore to original and they will never know.

Silentsoul says:

@Mississippi You "void" your warranty only if they find out. Jailbreaking alone won't make them aware.

Mississippi says:

thank y'all, I think that's the only thing keeping me from Jailbreaking my phone!

nic says:

can somebody help me i dont know anything about jailbreaking iam very new to this plz can someone help dont know how to download the firmware

Andy says:

If you're already on 4.3.3 it should be where the instructions say it is (C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates on Windows 7). Otherwise when iTunes asks you if you want to upgrade, choose "download only" and it will be there. But you need to upgrade anyway.

Andy says:

There is an important bit of info missing: Make sure you let iTunes upgrade you to 4.3.3 if you're not already. I was on 4.2.something and when I followed the JB instructions I thought I had bricked my 3GS. Thankfully I was able to restore in iTunes (eventually) before then running through the JB again without issue.

Ethan S. says:

First step is to let iTunes update you to 4.3.3.

Isaac says:

Do I need to restore before upgrading to 4.3.3 if jailbroken on 4.3.1?

Claire says:

It is suggested to restore your iPhone as new when jailbreaking to eliminate any "bad apples" from the last JB. It's really your choice, though...

Jeff says:

I cannot find the ipsw file on my xp machine. Makes no sense since I updated to 4.3.3 yesterday. Have no application data folder.

Mike says:

why does the "untethered" jailbreak have the option in redsnow to "just boot tethered right now"???

kixfan says:

I went through all the steps above and everything went great until the final reboot. Now my phone is stuck on the apple boot logo and wont do anything. Its a 3Gs on 4.3.3. Any idea what happened?

Hunter Rennie says:

I'm having issues with my jailbreak attempts. I follow the steps, but when i get to the past the rebooting step, to the screen where it says downloading jailbreak date on my iphone, it always freezes up. It never gets to the command prompt looking screen. can someone help me? I'm on an iphone 4 with 4.3.3 software.

iPhone 4 says:

yeah do it a few times eventually it will work. I tired holding the buttons a second later than what the jb said.

Vino says:

The guide could not be downloaded. For more ifoormatinn, right click the windows media center system tray icon and open windows media center update log.I want to download the TV guide but it won't download because it stoppes to early.sorry damien and amy but you've been no help.amy because it just doesn't work and damien it won't download in any way

Andrea says:

i just attempted to jailbreak my iphone 4 for the first time followed all directions and redsnow is stuck on waiting for reboot and my phone is stuck on a white screen nothing has been happening
help! please :)

Tarek says:

I upgraded to 4.3.3 through iTunes, then I followed up the procedures mentioned up but it stuck in mention "uploading ramdisk" on my PC and on my Iphone :downloading jailbreak data..." after a while the iphone reboots and and no cydia installed. also the software on my PC still the program shows the same message.

Tarek says:

I installed r16 and it worked for me.

Gokul nath says:

Me did the same thing, but not working??
When I open cydia, it closes itself to the home page, similar with safari web browser

Andrew says:

So I need to update my iPhone 4(AT&T) to 4.3.3 and also download the 4.3.3 link from above? I have never jailbroken and I have only had my iPhone for a couple of months. Does anyone have any tips? would it be better to jailbreak my ipad or iphone? which one can I fix easier if something bad happens?

ADS says:

I ran the jailbreak on my iPad, but my apps aren't installing from iTunes, it gives me an error on iTunes. I have cydia installed, no wifi access at the moment. My iPad is not a 3GS. My Cydia icon is white.

mandersen says:

I'm jailbreak stupid, but I'm at 4.0.1 and trying to get to 4.3.3. When I open redsnow it asks for my CURRENT version of firmware, do I need the 4.0.1 file or do I point it towards the 4.3.3 file I have downloaded? Why would it want the old 4.0.1 file?

Joel says:

GUYS,, AFTER i jailbreak it,, NOTHING happens,, JUST the same as before.. so, what this jailbreak supposed to be??
a joke??

Joel says:

Nevermind.. I GOT it now.. and Works Fine.. THNX...

ruruchan says:

what did you do? after jailbreaking mine, its as if its still the same as before.. i can't install cracked apps. help please. thanks

Terry says:

ok, so i have 4.3.3 and i jailbroke fine. I have cydia 1.1.1
but where do i go to find the apps, I dont have installer or anything?

Kizzy says:

Terry, find the Cydia app on your iPhone. Open it and once it does it's "thing", you can get apps through it.

ruruchan says:

i had my ipod touch 4g jailbroken.. there's an error though, i can't put cracked apps in it? why is that?

sam says:

I have a white iPhone already running on 4.3.3. Where do I locate the the IPSW with redsnow?

Terry says:

Documents and Settings[User]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes[Device] Software Updates *Windows Vista/7: Users[User]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates *Mac OS X: [User]/Library/iTunes/[Device] Software Updates/

Jimmy says:

I still dont understand how to do that. I'm on windows, and it's taking me just a little bit longer to find out how to do so.

iphonefamily says:

ths application can resolve a few problems with the prior redsn0w app, most importantly with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone..redsn0w rc16 has more improvements
good work

daniel says:

ocihc80 says:

If you do mind updating your baseband, easiest way is to open your itunes then update from there... Otherwise use snowbreeze etc (Just google it)...

Dwain says:

I have done this exactly as instructions said at least 10 times now and it still doesn't jailbreak it. None of my cracked apps will load.

Derek Smith says:

Follow the below steps and you are all set no worries:
1- shutdown your iphone with the hard reset "home button and power for 10 second"
2- connect the usb cable to the pc but NOT to the iphone"
3- open itunes
4- while the iphone is off, press the home button for 5-10 seconds then plus the other end of the white connection cable into the iphone
5- do not remove your finger from the home button
6- itunes will detect it and you can now restore it
7- finally you need to jailbreak it again..follow the web instructions
