Sony releases Crackle, free movie and TV streaming app

As rumor last week, Sony has released a Crackle app, bringing a ton of free movies and TV shows. Up until this point the content was limited to Flash based streaming to Macs, PC’s and certain models of Sony TV’s.

Crackle is one of the fastest growing digital entertainment networks, offering quality movies and TV series from Columbia Pictures, Tri-Star, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Classics and more

The app gives you access to full-length Hollywood movies and TV series with unlimited on demand viewing. You can browse genres or search by keywords and add content to a queue to watch later; either on your iOS device or online at Crackle.com.

Some of the movies listed as available are, Ghostbusters, Snatch, The Davinci Code and Sex Lies and Video Tape.  TV series cover S.W.A.T., The Three Stooges, Seinfield, What’s Happening, Samurai X and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Specials and many more.

The app is free to download and is a universal binary so works with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Streaming of the content is allowed over WiFi and 3G.

If any of our readers pick this one up, let us know how it compares to the online service!

I do have a US iTunes account. But generally an app like this will not work outside the US due to geoblocking. Why go get an app that almost certainly won't work in Ireland.

@Pat: In the app itself it says that their service is “Available in US, CA, UK and AU” so you might want to give it a try…?!
Looks more like it is limited to English-speaking countries and not just the US -- which still sucks for all the rest of us…! :(

Ok I went and got Crackle. It does work in Ireland, but there are only 4 movie trailers and a few talkshow clips and that's it. Small markets like Irekand get screwed when it comes to film and TV rights issues. We need an EU-wide rights system.

watching flatliners at work over 3G it's a little grainy dont know what the picture quality is over WiFi. IMO the iPhone is to small will test at home on the iPad2 later today. Battery 5 min into movie on iPhone using 3G started with 98% now at 88%

I noticed that the GPS arrow at the top stays on even after closing the app completely, I deleted the app on my iPhone and the GPS shut off, maybe a bug.

I noticed the exact same thing! I tried killing the app but the GPS stayed on. I finally had to delete it. I'm jailbroken with greenpoison 4.2.1.

It appears to be a bug. When you quit the app, or for that matter even reboot the phone, the GPS icon stays on at the top of the screen. I assume it's killing the battery running the GPS full time. The way to kill it is to go to Settings and Location Services and then manually turn off the service for Crackle.
However with location services off for the app, it tells me that it can't reach the server and hangs. Turn it back on, and the app launches just fine.
Sloppy programming. Goodbye Crackle from my phone ...

I noticed this same bug. as soon as you fire it up and then play around with the app for a bit the location will come on and even if you respring or restart the phone it will still stay on. I deleted the app and it went away.

Looks cool but what's the catch besides being ad supported? I noticed that in screenshot on the iTunes page, it is using location services (from the compass arrow in the upper right hand corner). Why would this thing need to know your location to watch a show? If you don't allow the app to use your location, will it not work?

Your IP address would do that. You wouldn't need the user's exact location to make sure they are in the US.
Name* answered my question by confirming that you can turn off location services for this app, and it will still work.

Boarding a flight so thanks for the tip, and thanks to the comments I turned off "location" since the app was munching battery.

This is great.
Despite the quality, ads, bugs or whatever else you want to gripe about for a free app, it is nice to see providers open their eyes and recognize that making their content easily accessible on demand and on multiple platforms - including mobile - is good for them.

I was able to download it but over here in Germany I don't really get any content at all, except for 5-6 trailers for 80's movies…!? That's all they're showing…
I then browsed their info and in the app itself it says that their service is "Available in US, CA, UK and AU" -- so this time it's not limited to the US but only to English-speaking countries or what…?! Man, those geographic limitations when it comes to media like movies and music are totally anachronistic and just plain suck…! :(

Mine says network connection required even when I am connected to both wifi and 3g. Anyone experiencing this?

same here, "Network Connection Required... blah blah blah". iPod Touch, network is fine. Netflix, Youtube, Safari all work fine. I tried restart already. Same error.

Over Wifi quality is fantastic. As far as English only I think most of these types of apps it will depend on the content, translating or subtitles would cost money. As it is now they just package up content that they already have and don't have to spend much to deliver.

Warning, this app uses location services constantly, even when the app is completely closed out. Best to turn this off manually. The app still works without letting it know where you are.

Update. Apparently the servers were down for a bit. It DOES launch with location services off for the app. So there is a workaround.

I am trying to stream this to my regular tv using the same composite cord I use for Netflix, but only the sound goes through. Does this app not support that function?

I am having a problem getting the app to work om ny ipod 2g. it was working fine and yesterday it stopped. it works on my iPhone.

I'm still having a problem getting Crackle to work on my ipod 2g. I also get the message Network Connection Required. I am on wifi and I get all other apps to work. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get it to work again

It's a great app. The only question I have is whether you can stream through your normal TV in the same way the Apple connection lead allows for the iPod app?

Heya i'm for the first time here. I came across this board and I find It really useful & it helped me out a lot. I hope to provide something back and aid others like you helped me.

You actually make it appear so easy together with your presentation but I find this matter to be really something that I think I would by no means understand. It sort of feels too complicated and very extensive for me. I am taking a look forward to your subsequent submit, I will try to get the grasp of it!

I have been browsing online greater than 3 hours lately, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It's lovely value enough for me. In my opinion, if all webmasters and bloggers made excellent content material as you probably did, the internet might be much more useful than ever before.
