Apps

Would you like Apple to move built-in apps to the App Store? [Poll]

Would you like Apple to move built-in apps to the App Store?

The iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad currently come pre-installed with range of apps including Messages, Calendar, Photos, Camera, Clock, Maps, Videos, Notes, Reminders, Game Center, Newsstand, iTunes Store, App Store, Settings, Mail, Safari, and music. None of those apps can be downloaded from the App Store, nor can they be deleted. They simply are. But what if that changed? What if Apple still pre-installed those same apps, but updated them via the App Store?

Perhaps Apple can already update built-in apps outside of firmware updates, perhaps not. To date they haven't taken advantage of any such functionality. They haven't pushed out a new version of just Safari to patch a vulnerability or exploit. They haven't pushed out a new version of mail to add a clever new feature. They haven't pushed out a new version of Game Center to remove those super-annoying "[Your soon-to-be-former-friend] has challenged you to [scummy app you'll now be avoiding]." When there's a long gap between iOS updates, there's a long gap between built-in iOS app updates.

How to get iMore to cover your apps and games

Today's Talk Mobile was all about helping developers better market their apps. Media outlets like iMore are an important part of that marketing, yet like any resource, we have our limits. We get dozens of app submissions a day and sometimes hundreds a week, but we only have time to cover a handful. And as much as we love developers and apps, we love our readers even more, and take our responsibility to them incredibly seriously. We're only ever going to offer them the very best apps and games we can find. To put it bluntly, if something looks or works like crap, we're not going anywhere near it.

So, if you're a developer and you've made an amazing app or game, what's the best way to ensure it gets featured on iMore? There's no absolute answer to that question -- it's a classic chaos equation -- but there's a lot of things that can help, and a few that can hinder:

The popular social word game Letterpress has been updated with a few new features and fixes, the most notable being the ability to save words for later. This is restricted to a single word per game, and you simply tap-and-hold the Clear button to close out a game after you've selected a word. The next time you open the game, the word will fly back up out of the grid.
