As you all know, we’ve been watching the App Store for iOS4 compatible updates. We’ve found a few we think are worthy of a postup, and as normal, if you guys find anything especially awesome, feel free to leave it in a comment or send it to me in an e-mail (ally (dot) kazmucha (at) tipb (dot) com) and if we think it’s awesome too, we’ll include it in our next roundup!

Hit the jump to see what we found lurking in the App Store this time!

Bing

Bing is relatively new to the search game, but it’s definitely holding it’s own. As far as search engines go, I’m a fan of how Bing is organized and how it now interacts with your social networks. Bing is now updated for iOS4 support (mainly multitasking). There was no talk of support for the retina display for iPhone 4, and I’m really hoping this is something Microsoft will eventually add. It’s already got a beautiful layout, that would just make it even more enjoyable to look at.

[iTunes Link]

CoPilot

CoPilot is a popular navigation app. There are several versions of CoPilot, so you’d have to find the one that’s for your country. It provides turn by turn satellite navigation and it’s now compatible with iOS4 and offers background navigation. It’ll even continue giving your directions while talking on the phone. CoPilot has also added support for the iPhone 4′s retina display.

[iTunes Link] – (North American Version)

Gowalla

Now this is an app I use on a daily basis and for the past few weeks, the GPS glitches had been driving me nuts. It would tell me I was somewhere I definitely was not, and it was creating spots in the wrong places for a lot of people. They released an update recently that allows support for iOS4 but there was one little problem, every single time you’d open Gowalla, if it was backgrounded, it refused to update your GPS location until you physically closed the task and reopened it, then it would show GPS accurately (some of the time). I was surprised to see Gowalla released an update so quickly, but the new one seems to solve the GPS not refreshing. I have also noticed for the past few days, it’s been spot on, which is a nice change. There’s also now support for the iPhone 4 retina display. Badges and Pins have been tweaked a bit and overall, I’d say I’m happy with this update. It really needed it, and I’m glad to see Gowalla has responded to user issues quickly.

[iTunes Link]

Waze

Waze is a unique type of social networking application that’s based upon movement. On top of that, it’s also a completely free turn by turn nav app that’ll give you traffic reports. The most recent update to Waze adds support for backgrounding and Facebook integration. The app will automatically kill the background task after 10 minutes of no movement. If you’ve experimented with it, let us know what you think in the comments!

[iTunes Link]

Osfoora

I’m relatively new to Osfoora (finally caved and got it after several people suggested it). I’m definitely not disappointed and it’s my main Twitter client (for now anyways, I’m pretty shallow when it comes to Twitter clients). The most recent update to Osfoora adds support for iOS4 via multitasking. I didn’t see anything about an update for the iPhone 4 retina display but the icons look sharper. I could just be seeing things, anyone else catch this or is it still the same? Overall, Osfoora is incredibly quick and multitasking will take you right where you left off. You can also upload a picture or video in the background, which to me is extremely useful, especially when I’m in areas with crappy Edge service.

We’re still lurking the App Store for signs of apps that have added iOS 4 support and we’ve found some more good ones. Some apps are only adding compatibility while some really take advantage of the new APIs Apple is offering to developers. Adding compatibility isn’t the same as adding new APIs and features to increase not only user experience, but productivity and ease of use.

Read on to see what ones intrigued us this time.

Apple Store Mobile

I just received this update today and it adds retina display support for images within the Apple Store for iPhone 4 users as well as fast app switching. If you haven’t downloaded this one yet, it’s definitely much more convenient than trying to browse the Apple website within Safari, and it’s free.

[iTunes Link]

Twittelator Pro

Twittelator Pro has always been a serious contender in the race for best Twitter client. A lot of people are hardcore users and follow the platform faithfully. They’ve updated their app with support for fast app switching along with the promise of faster speeds within the app. That’s all they’ve announced, but to me, the icon and app looks a heck of a lot sharper on the iPhone 4. Anyone else notice this?

[iTunes Link]

Reeder

Reeder has been my all-time favorite RSS app on my iPhone for quite a while now. I was happy to see they have now issued an update for iOS4 that supports fast app switching. Reeder would always cache the page even under OS 3.0 but the app just loads so much quicker now, and if you’re actually viewing the real page within the Reeder browser, it won’t kick you out of the article if you close it out, thanks to multitasking.

[iTunes Link]

Echofon

Echofon, like Twittelator Pro is also one of the more popular Twitter clients you’ll find in the App Store. Recent updates in the past few months have made this client all the better. They offer a free version and a paid version (sans the ads). Echofon also offers push notifications and many of the advanced features clients like Twitter for iPhone and Twitteriffic offer. This update added fast app switching and retina display support for iPhone 4 users. If you haven’t updated, go check it out!

[iTunes Link]

GoodReader

GoodReader is not only a PDF viewer but a program that will allow USB file transfer between devices. It also provides wifi syncing as well which is awesome for transferring large PDF and text files to your iPhone from your computers. I find this especially useful for work documents such as Excel files and large resolution images. GoodReader also carriers a free version, but you’re limited to transferring 5 files at a time. The iOS4 update allows for fast app switching. It does appear they have a bug in iOS4 that affects USB file transfer, and I’m not sure whether they’ve fixed that and just not updated the description, or if it’s still present. I haven’t had any issues, how about you guys?

[iTunes Link]

Does iPhone 4 support the iPad camera kit? Turns out no, at least not under iOS 4. I plugged mine in and immediately got the error you see above. Since I’ve gotten compatibility errors using other accessories in the past that turned out to work just find if I ignored said errors, I plugged in a camera to see if anything magical would happen.

It didn’t.

Whether or not Apple will chose to add that functionality in a future iOS software update, or if they’ve decided that, somewhere in their product differentiation matrix, iPhone is for creating photos and iPad is for consuming them via USB and SD card adapter, we’ll have to wait and see.

[Thanks Sina for asking!]

During yesterday’s WWDC 2010 keynote, Steve Jobs announced that iOS 4 will be a FREE update for all devices, and the iPhone and iPod touch version will be released on June 21 (iPad version is still slated for fall). The main features include multitasking, folders, spellcheck, unified inbox with threaded messages, iBooks, Bluetooth keyboard support, and custom wallpaper. (Be sure to check out our iOS 4 preview for more details!)

iOS 4 is available for the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and the 2nd and 3rd-generation iPod touch. On the other hand, the original iPhone 2G and 1st-generation iPod touch will not be able to upgrade to iOS 4, and as with every big software release, some devices will not get all the new features.

Multitasking, custom wallpaper, and Bluetooth keyboard support are only available for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the 3rd-generation iPod touch.

In the past, iPod touch users had to purchase big software releases for $9.99. Not this year. iOS 4 is a FREE upgrade for iPod touch. This is huge news for our iPod touch wielding readers.

If you use an iPhone 3G or 2nd-generation iPod touch, do any of these missing features entice you to upgrade? If so, do you plan to go big and upgrade to iPhone 4; or do you upgrade to the iPhone 3GS at the new amazingly low price of $99? iPod touch users, are you thrilled to be able to upgrade for free, or do you believe it should’ve been free all along?

Let us know in the comments below!

What there are signs

While Jailbreaking iPhone 3.1 on the original iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G has made some strides, there’s still no sign of an iPhone 3GS version. What there are signs of, however, are more and more apps taking advantage of iPhone 3.1-only APIs, meaning they can’t be run on iPhone 3.0, meaning they’re not available to iPhone 3GS Jailbreakers.

So far these iPhone 3.1-only apps are confined to a few camera-specific apps, but including the new features of the update, as augmented-reality functionality spreads, never mind whatever comes with the iPhone 3.2 beta when it appears, the number of incompatible apps is only going to grow.

So here’s our question for iPhone 3GS Jailbreakers — are you still content to wait for the Dev-Team to Jailbreak (and allow safe unlock of) 3.1, or are you getting tempted to restore to the plain vanilla OS? And how long will you wait?
